Resident Evil 7 Weapons, Story Details Confirmed by ESRB Rating

In Resident Evil 7, you'll use weapons like shotguns, chainsaws, and flamethrowers.

Resident Evil 7 has been a bit of a mystery since it was revealed at E3 this year, but new details have emerged thanks to a posting on the ESRB site, spotted by Twitter user Wario64. And surprise, surprise: it's rated M for mature.

One aspect of the upcoming Resident Evil game that we're uncertain of is just how much combat the game will contain. According to the now-removed ESRB rating summary, players will use weapons like "pistols, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives, and chainsaws" against mutated creatures. That's quite the armory compared to the axe that was included in the Resident Evil 7: The Beginning Hour demo.

The summary also mentions a couple scenes of pretty intense-sounding graphic violence. These include dismemberment by chainsaw and shovel, in addition to a shovel getting impaled through a character's face. There are also areas that include mangled corpses with guts hanging out, exposed to the whole world. On top of that, you'll be exposed to naughty words like "f**k" and "s**t," so get your earplugs ready if you don't want your ears debased.

Additionally, we learn the name of the protagonist and part of his story. You'll take control of Ethan, who's looking for his wife in a dilapidated mansion. As for story details we already know, there's some kind of cult-like family that shares a sorted past. No other details have been revealed, but we'll likely find out more in the near future, as Capcom reveals the purpose of the Resident 7 demo's dummy finger.

No Caption Provided

Resident Evil 7's demo was compared to PT, the playable teaser for Silent Hills, which was eventually canceled. Resident Evil 7 director Masachika Kawata said his team was "actually creating Resident Evil 7 before PT was announced."

"[W]hen they announced it, it was kind of like, 'Oh, they're doing first-person too?" he said. ""However, now that we've come this far, we can see that the content of this game is completely different from what the content or the direction that [PT] was moving in."

Kawata said he was "very disappointed" that Silent Hills was canceled, adding that he "really loved it."

Resident Evil 7 launches on January 24 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The Beginning Hour demo is currently only available on PS4 for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Honestly, no matter which direction Capcom went at this point, there would be a certain group of RE fans bitching and disappointed. At least there's the RE2 remake to look forward to and RER for fans who prefer something similar to the classic style RE.

There are fanbases out there who don't have those kinds of options or their favorite game series is no more, period. Just some food for thought. Who knows, this might turn out to be excellent, sure it's different but that doesn't automatically equate to bad. We need to play the final product before ultimately making up our minds, I think that's only fair.

For those who have an aversion to FPP games e.g. motion sickness, dislike that perspective etc. I'm genuinely sorry. it's a long shot but you never know, there could be a 3rd person camera option. If not at release, possibly via a patch. This, of course, depends on the engines capabilities and if Capcom is willing and able to implement TPP camera mode.

Am i one of the only people that grew up with the original that is happy the are doing first person? At first I would of never wanted it, but the more I thought about it they would of gotten flack if they did what we all wanted in 3rd person. Yes people would of like it but im sure a lot would of also said the opposite. People dont understand that those kind of game mechanics wouldn't nearly have the same effect it did in 96. The game needed a fresh facelift and this is it. Besides we have the re2 remake for are oldschool fix!

Wow, a lot of negativity here. . Yeah the demo and recent trailer didn't help me get hyped for 7 either. However I'm willing to wait and try the final product.

I don't like this change to FPS , this game is not Resident evil , I know they fucked the latest versions of this game but that doesn't mean this can't work , as a fan of RE I don't think horror FPS is something I was waiting for . besides horror FPS is all over the market why would I want another one and why it's going to be any good .

Capcom doesn't even understand what Resident Evil is and they created it... I swear this has become the most bastardized franchise that they own, and it makes me sick as its one of my favorite franchises ever created.

I was already pissed off with 4, 5 and 6 and they're total garbage as RE games, and then they're like "we're going back to Resident Evil's roots!".. Really? Did you really think that when people said they wanted RE to return to its roots that they simply meant a Survival Horror game?

No, they wanted the game to fundamentally return to what Resident Evil started as and ended with at Resident Evil: Zer. A legacy modeled RE game that's modern looking with strong jump scares, fixed cameras, great puzzles, a decent enough story to tie it all together with familiar characters, and tie ins to the older games so it all actually makes sense.

What you're creating with RE7 is just some random survival horror game with Resident Evil slapped in the name, and it may be a survival horror, but that doesn't make it Resident Evil... That's the problem with 4, 5, & 6, all admittedly decent games, and 4 may even be considered a masterpiece, however, THEY SUCK AS RESIDENT EVIL GAMES and should have just spun off as a new IP...

Capcom, you are so ignorantly clueless and all you had to do was just hold a dialog with the community, all of this shit could have been avoided... Again...

@dynamitecop: They don't understand what it is because only one man understood it that is no longer with Capcom... Shinji Mikami. I swear if they somehow brought him on board as director, Resident Evil will be revived the 'right' way again. People don't seem to understand that he was the visionary here, not Capcom..these leftover Capcom dummies don't have the proper Resident Evil leader that was responsible for making it great..without him, these games will never find their footing.

I'm so jacked for this game. So little has been shown of it and people are hating on it so hard because it's first person. I played the HD remake just recently and the fixed cameras just do not hold up the controls suck, although it didn't stop me from getting all the achievements for it. Resident Evil 4 was phenomenal, Resident Evil 5 was alright but it's pretty hard to be a horror game during daylight. There's nothing frightening about the originals but I could just be desensitized now. I really think this will give Resident Evil the boost it needs to become a top quality franchise again. Again not much has been shown so people assuming zombies are gone or not the same is just speculation. From what I've seen and what people in the demos/videos have said it feels more like a family got hit with some form of the T-Virus and are now forcing it into people they find. That's just me making a guess from the woman in the most recent video saying why don't you want this gift (gist of what she says not direct quote). This game is my most looked forward to game that came from E3 this year.

@jimfury: Well everybody is entitled to there own opinion but boy do I feel bad for you if this was your most looked forward to game that came out of E3. This game looks absolutely nothing like Resident Evil. The first person is a big killer for me not because I don't like first person games but they do not belong in the RE series. But hey if your looking forward to it that's all that matters and I may even get it to but I need to see some actual in-game footage not just a bunch of information but a 0% chance I'm buying it way things stand right now.

@arumat33: "Do not belong in the Resident Evil series"- why? that makes no sense- franchises need to evolve and if this is direction, sign me up. Sure as hell beats the COD style garbage of 6.

I guess Resident Evil is never going to go back to the shambling Romero-style zombies, which was always the series' main appeal to me and many others.

@frank_castle: Pretty sure Zombies was always early-game, mid/late game was more focused on bug or reptilian Mutants. Having little to do with Zombies.

@RSM-HQ: They would deviate a bit later on in the games (infected dogs, spiders, the giant snake in the original, etc) but at their core the first 3 games (and Code Veronica) were survival horror games with shambling zombies as the primary antagonists.

Then Resident Evil 4 came along and we were fighting crazed villagers with fucking plants popping out of their heads. RE4 is a good game, but it's essentially Resident Evil in name only. There were really no survival/horror elements to it. Ammo and health herbs are pretty much everywhere and easy to spot thanks to the arcade-y light beams shooting up from them. Not to mention the merchant.

Don't even get me started on the entries into the series since then.

@frank_castle: that was a part of it- but it was more about suspense and moody creepy atmospheres. Not knowing whats around the corner. This is essentially what 7 is doing via 1st person- at least it looks like it.

Even with this new information I'm still trying to figure out why this has the Resident Evil name attached to it aside from the hopeful sales increase based off the name. This sounds nothing like a RE game so far aside from the weapons you get to use.

@arumat33: That's literally it. A lot of games getting that treatment. No slow evolution, just skin something with a loyal playerbase and cram something that doesn't fit in it Buffalo Bill style and dancing around with your actual gameplay taped back saying "Would you play me? I'd play me."

Well that's a relief... I was afraid that RE7 was going to follow in the footsteps of more modern horror games like Amnesia/Outlast, and while those are great games, I don't want Resident Evil to copy them.

If anything, Resident Evil needs to get back to its roots.
