Resident Evil 7 Ships 4 Million Copies, Still Well Below Expectations

That's up from 3.5 million but still well below the longer-term expectations.

Resident Evil 7 has now shipped at least 4 million copies, according to a graphic on the horror game's website spotted by PC Gamer. That is a big number, but it is below Capcom's expectations.

Capcom said back in May that Resident Evil 7 shipped 3.5 million units, representing a "solid start" for the game, but below the company's forecast of 4 million shipped by March 31. Over its lifetime, Capcom is predicting that Resident Evil 7 will ship 10 million copies. So it still has a good amount of work to do to get there.

Back in May, Capcom said Resident Evil 7 failing to meet the initial sales targets is not necessarily such a bad thing because the "lifecycle for games is growing longer." Not only that, but digital sales are growing, and those are higher-margin compared to boxed retail games, which is a plus for Capcom.

Additionally, Resident Evil 7's favorable reviews will help it continue to sell, Capcom said, while the company is also planning marketing events and more DLC to help increase sales further. "This title was received favorably by both fans and the media; further, its unit sales continue to grow even now," Capcom said at the time. "We will work to achieve our unit sales goal this fiscal year by continuing to generate buzz with promotional activities that include events for fans, as well as with downloadable content."

Next up for Resident Evil 7 is the free Not A Hero DLC, which adds Chris Redfield and launches on December 12. Also due out that day is the End of Zoe expansion, which features a "mysterious outdoorsman named Joe who lives along the bank of the marshes." This expansion costs $15.

Newcomers to the game can pick up Resident Evil 7: Gold Edition, which launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on December 12. This includes End of Zoe and the previous two premium DLC packs, Banned Footage Volume 1 and 2.

Alternatively, newcomers to the game can pick up Resident Evil 7: Gold Edition, which launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on December 12. This includes End of Zoe and the previous two premium DLC packs, Banned Footage Volume 1 and 2. Not a Hero was intended to be out earlier this year, but it ended up delayed because Capcom "concluded that this DLC was not good enough to meet those high expectations" following the acclaimed launch of the base game.

I hope that Capcom does the Chris DLC right and makes it genuinely scary with a tad dash more of the more earlier classic RE elements in the gameplay. A little bit of both old and new!! Also, wheres the RE2 Remake as far as production stages go? Havent heard nuttin on it in a while?

Steam Halloween sale coming in two hours. Doubt it will hit the 5 million mark if it hasn't yet but it should do well this week. Fun to watch people stream/LP this.

I didn't buy the game because I know how Capcom works. Every game gets loaded with DLC followed by a Gold Edition a year later. I have no reason to buy their stuff on release, especially when I always have tons of other games to play.

This is a polarizing title. People either love it or don't, but it's strange to hear certain complaints from people. People say, "I want RE to go back to the old formula!" Well... VII did... More focus on suspense, less on action, puzzles and keys are prevalent once again. It's just the perspective has changed. It's evolved. If you ask me, Resident Evil VII is the Metroid Prime of of the Resident Evil series. It took everything that people loved about the series and just put it in first-person. Those who have judged and never played it based on appearances have really missed out on a quality title. This game's never hitting that 10 million mark because too many people can't get past their doubts to try this game. Plus, RE6 will forever remain in their minds.

@JustPlainLucas: I think the "OLD" formula also meant the return of zombies too. Not these boring ooze monsters. And where is monster variety? This chainsaw massacre influence is pretty far from RE roots.

Still needs fixed camera angles, zombies, and yes survival horror with keys, etc. I'll wait for the RE2 remake for that. Now THAT'S Resident Evil.

@clay544888:Let's all be honest here. Zombies themselves aren't very exciting anymore. They've been done to death. That's why RE4 was so fresh, because the "zombies" in that game weren't zombies. They were mind-controlled villagers that sometimes had parasites burst out of them. RE monsters have always evolved away from zombies. Hell, even the very first RE didn't just keep it at zombies. So this game has "ooze monsters" in replace of zombies, but they're still the same thing essentially: slow-moving shuffling enemies that you have to avoid and kill.

As for chainsaw massacre, I suppose you're referring to the family. I'll admit that it made REVII feel like a very different beast, but if you played the game (I'm assuming you haven't), you'd understand near the end how it all connects to the universe. Also, aside from one family member, they all had excellent boss battles that fit right in with how RE bosses are usually done. I'll concede that the monster variety is lacking, but aside from that two aspects, it is pure Resident Evil. Fixed camera angles should never return. They're remnants of archaic game design when developers either didn't have the processing knowledge or hardware to make realized 3D worlds. Also, there is "survival horror with keys" in RE7. Plenty of it.

@JustPlainLucas: Yes I did play and finish RE7 and although it was a solid game throughout, it just needed more enemy variety. Spoilers for anyone reading***

In my opinion, the game was strongest when it focused on the mansion and went overboard when it got to the ship.(the ship did have it's moments) But I wasn't a big fan of the little girl being the center of the big mess. And the whole "you don't love me mommy so I must kill" BS and acting similar to those corny horror movies where the little girl acts all corny.

The game was intense when Jack was around and exploring the mansion was awesome and the atmosphere was top notch. I was running it on my PC at max settings at 1440p and it looked amazing. And it was immersive as Hell walking through the mansion with headphones on absorbing it all.

But zombies getting stale is just your opinion. I for one never get tired of zombies. Sure variety is great but this is the Resident Evil universe. It should have zombies and zombie dogs in it somewhere. The main problem is I don't consider the molded interesting enough to replace zombies and tyrants. I'll personally welcome new creatures if the concept is original enough. I just could only imagine how awesome zombies would look in that new RE engine and combined with the atmosphere...I could only dream...the problem is the zombie thing was done on a very shitty graphics engine in the PS1 days and I would like to see a reimagining. RE6 for me was not good enough even though it had zombies. Too action-y for Resident Evil's origins.

And lastly, I disagree. I absolutely think fixed camera angles NEEDS to return. Look how well it worked in the Resident Evil HD remaster which is by far the best RE game besides part 2. The reason why I think it's still awesome is because it makes the game feel cinematic like a movie and it adds a new layer of strategy to the game where you have to use sound to figure out what you're dealing with in front of you. It adds a dynamic to the game. And I also miss each room having it's own little soundtrack...something sorely missing in RE7. Too quiet most of the time. The music really adds to the atmosphere IMO.

@girlusocrazy: Well that's debatable...I liked Leon's campaign but Leon's character was too different from older RE's and it really took me out of the experience. RE4's Leon was better IMO. And even Chris Redfield was too different too. The characters were almost unrecognizable to me compared to the old PS1 games... RE6 to me was a fun co-op action game but a terrible RE game.

And the game was reviewed terribly and was hated for years so I'm surprised people are actually praising it suddenly. Idk. I guess it all comes down to taste I guess. I need RE to stay in it's roots and not like RE6 personally. That's why I'm REALLY looking forward to the Resident Evil 2 remake. YAY!

@clay544888: I didn't really notice a difference in Leon, the story was always too crazy to follow and I just let it do what it has to do until I can get back to the gameplay. I never felt bored, the campaigns and different character abilities would change things up and kept me interested. I did prefer Leon's campaign but was happy to have all of them.

What I enjoyed about RE6 was the atmosphere, the areas were very well crafted with a lot of variation and detail, and they finally tuned the movement and shooting to perfection for a controller. I do miss the Wii remote in RE4 and PS Move in RE5, but at least they did an excellent job with the controller.

After RE5 I felt that they were finally going back in the right direction with RE6. RE5 had terrible controls (I even have a hard time going back to RE4) and it took PS Move to make it playable. But worst of all, the campaign, especially the first half of the game, felt very aimless and the atmosphere just was not convincing or interesting.

I also couldn't get into the first three games, I just can't aim in those games, I can't deal with the perspective or off-screen enemies, I can't even play the first MGS properly because of this, I had to play Twin Snakes instead. If there was some kind of auto aim maybe I could do it.

Because of that I'm very interested in the RE2 remake!

I'm sure it'll get to 10 million life time because they keep remaking each installment with remakes or HD, etc. There are lots of suckers who would buy a HD remake just to relive a title in higher resolution. so expect XYZUHD version of RE7 for PS10.

I know a lot of people that are holding off on buying the game because they are waiting for the Not a Hero DLC, so the sales are coming. They shot themselves in the foot by telling us the game's proper ending isn't included in the base game. That and we all know Capcom's tricks by now. Never buy the base game. Wait for the complete edition.

No matter how great can it be,
No matter how much marketting can be done to advertise it and promote it,
No horror game will never reach numbers Capcom expected!

Horror is a very specific and narrow market NOT for everyone!

Games like the Nintendos 1st party titles and the likes aim for the masses, that's why it has no difficulty reaching milestones!
Horror games will reach maybe 10-20% of the gaming market and about 50% of the people interested in it won't be "fan" enough to buy them at full retail prices and will wait for price drops before jumping into them!
(I am one of those)

Besides, I'm pretty sure it will sell well over time!
First Resident Evil didn't sell all its copies in the 1st year!

I had friends back then who discovered Resident Evil years and years after its release.
Same could happen here!

Didn't blow me away as a RE title, but was decent as a horror game. I expect RE to be focused more on viruses, zombies, mutants, etc. Enjoyed RE6 playing on the hardest difficulty with a friend, but could have ditched the separate story routes. Hope another experience like that comes back from the RE series.

They must stop complaining. Another great and really good survival horror is failing to reach the one million mark, The Evil Within 2.

It's sad, but the new generation of gamers is way different from mine (I grew up with the Sega Megadrive), they don't care about single-player games and story-driven hits. All they want is multi-player games and they have no problems with microtransactions and loot boxes.

It is a good game, but I think people overestimate how prevalent the "we want things to be like they were 20 years ago" crowd is in gaming. RE sold better and was more popular as an over-the-top action game, but if you look at the loudest and most frequent voices in comment sections/forums you would assume RE5 and 6 were universally despised.

Those people aren't the most prevalent, they're just the loudest.

@joejoe1639: I was a huge RE fan right from the release of RE1. I played all the games up to RE4 which was my favorite and I spent hours basically completely mastering that game. Then RE5 came out and I hated it. The graphics were good but the controls and buddy system were bad and really ruined the game for me. I just didn't enjoy playing it at all. PLus, by that point, I had lost count of how many RE games/remakes/reboots I'd played and realized I honestly couldn't tell you what the point of the story even was anymore. So the series had no story, no real plotline, and now the gameplay was showing its age as well with all kinds of little problems.

When I saw RE6 I just said "nope" and walked away. RE7 was the first RE game since 4 to really get me excited and interested but I'm not 40 and have young kids who suck up all my free time. The chance of me getting to play it is much lower than a few years ago. Not that my schedule seems a bit more clear and free, I've actually been looking for this game and honestly, I'm disappointed its still full price. But worse than that? I can't find copies in any store I've gone to. I finally just got it thanks to Sony's Halloween online sale thing where it was $35. Started playing it the other night and the game is amazing. But a first person horror game like this is never going to sell 10 million no matter how good it is.

The scarier the game, the less people will buy it. If this was a third person action/horror game more in line with RE4...10 million should be easy. But making it a truly scary first person survival horror game automatically limits its appeal and sales. The issue isn't the sales. The issue is unrealistic expectations. Capcom trying to pump more marketing dollars is just going to result in even greater disappointment. Look at the Dead Space 3 story from the other day. Dead SPace sold real well and was highly acclaimed...but "failed" because EA spent as much money trying to get unrealistic sales as the game cost to make. It's stupid and publishers are going to be the death of console gaming as we know it.

Alternatively Resident Evil 7 was going to see a drop in sales relative to six regardless of how it was designed because Resident Evil 6 was such a disappointment, and rubbed people the wrong way, turning them off of the franchise.

@ghostbuddy: 6 was the same basic formula as 5; 4 and 7 were the ones that changed things up. 4 was the start of a huge upswing and 7 was a notable drop.

Despite what you read on forums and comment sections, the trend is pretty obvious.

I played through it, twice, and it's a BLAST!
The 1st person is a welcome addition despite de fact that it sorts of steer away from the original concept which RE was known for. (3rd person / Tank controls)
