Resident Evil 7 Expected To Ship 10 Million Units, Still Has A Lot Of Work To Do

Capcom says the game's strong reviews and more marketing efforts will help sales grow further.

Resident Evil 7 failed to reach Capcom's initial expectations, shipping 3.5 million copies for the fiscal year ended March 31, below the company's forecast of 4 million. Despite that, the publisher remains optimistic that the game can achieve 10 million in shipments for its lifetime.

The English translation of an investor Q&A session was published today, and in it, Capcom management said Resident Evil 7's 3.5 million shipments represents a "solid start." The company noted that unit sales for the game, and Monster Hunter Double Cross, have seen a "solid start."

No Caption Provided

Capcom noted that Resident Evil 7 failing to meet the initial sales targets is not the end of the world because the "lifecycle for games is growing longer." Not only that, but digital sales are getting bigger and bigger, and those are higher-margin compared to boxed retail games, which is a plus for Capcom.

Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6 each individually sold in the range of 7.5 million to 10 million units, and the expectation is that Resident Evil 7 will get there as well...eventually.

Resident Evil 7's favorable reviews will help it continue to sell, Capcom said, while the company is also planning marketing events and more DLC to help increase sales further.

"This title was received favorably by both fans and the media; further, its unit sales continue to grow even now," Capcom said. "We will work to achieve our unit sales goal this fiscal year by continuing to generate buzz with promotional activities that include events for fans, as well as with downloadable content."

In other news, Capcom has delayed Resident Evil 7's Not A Hero expansion. Two add-on packs, called Banned Footage Volumes 1 and 2, were released earlier this year

We'll see how long it will take until it hits the 10 million units mark. Best go back to 3rd Person Mode once again. That's what makes Resident Evil/Biohazard known as Resident Evil/Biohazard.

@umfan36: My only issue with the game is that it's in 1st Person Mode. I want to see my character. Not hands and guns only. Boring. Make that boring to the max.

However, that did not stop me from playing the whole game and also the DLCs because I only play RE7 for the story, not the gameplay. Also easily forgiven when playing with a VR Headset. That way, it is not Ethan, Mia, Zoe, Chris or Joe who we are playing as. At least not just as them. We are playing as ourselves, seeing those Biohazard monsters up close and there's no alert on whether they are present or not. That's what makes a good Survival Horror game.

P.S.: 1st Person Mode also did not stop me from playing Umbrella & Darkside Chronicles. Just that I prefer Resident Evil to remain 3rd Person Shooter.

not gonna happen xD

Seriously game has unremarkable gameplay, boring pacing and the only connection to RE franchise is its title. Seriously I dont care what its fanboys say, there wasn't single RE game, where you have one boss chasing your through stages without any additional enemies for at least half of the game.

Boring game didn't care for it at all, no mercenaries or raidmode, no crazy weapons or big boy magums with unlimited ammo, just play through the game on harder difficulty that isn't even that hard, just boring.

If you like boring hide and seek games with nice visuals then get outlast, cause this game is even more boring than outlast.

Ya I said it.

@ZeEzO: Based on your dull comment I don't think you've played Resident Evil 7, funnily I commend your attempt to at least try and have a noteworthy opinion.

"If you like boring hide and seek games"

Only time you 'need' to hide is in the Mia videotape mini game (optional), and that's if you want a none detection run.

Also Outlast sucks. No weapons, no way to fight back, it's a walking simulator with a Horror setting.

Lastly you got unlimited Ammo with the Albert when you beat Madhouse, that with enchanted ammo is a "big boy" weapon. And that's not counting the awesome Saw you get that rips bosses to pieces.

@RSM-HQ: Of course I played it but I didn't finish it because it was soo boring, right now it sits on my shelf collecting dust while I'm playing rainbowsix3 as I debate ever since January to sell it or keep it so I have it for my collection.

But I won't finish it because it's too boring.

Just my opinion you can number sign 'git gud' all you want, it doesn't change the fact for ME that the game was boring and not worth finishing.

So, RE6 sells millions and RE7 came up short... just one more proof that the opinion of forum dwellers means close to nothing... what they want is not what sells in the end

@Vatusus: Resident Evil 6 from my knowledge had a much bigger budget, but who cares what the worst of scum in System-Wars think?

I personally liked Resi6 and 7. With that stated I did like 7 much, much more. Resi 6 suffered from an identity crisis yet still had its moments and Merc mode was awesome. Resi7 however just felt right and knew what it wanted to be.

@Vatusus: actually, RE 6 was a failure in it's sales. it had a much bigger development&Marketing cost compare to RE 7.(you can tell that by comparing the two games. RE 6 had multiplayer,4 campaigns lots of cutscenes and set pieces and more enemy types. and in the terms of advertisements RE 6 had much more compare to 7)

capcom expected to sell 7 million copies until the end of 2012 but they sold 4.5 million copies.

but Capcom Expected to sell 4 million copies of RE 7 until april.and they have sold 3.5 million so far.

@dorog1995: Resident Evil 6 from the year 2012 to, as of April 2018, sold over 9.5 million copies. As for Resident Evil 7, it only took from 24th January, 2017 up to March 2018 to sell around 5.1 million copies worldwide. Although I find Resident Evil 6 the best entry for me, I know when to give credit where it's due and that's Resident Evil 7 in this case.

@7tizz: Survival and Survival Horror share only a word, not gameplay.

You survive in a Survival Horror because you have to decide when to use an item and if you should in that situation at all. Make the wrong choice and you've essentially ruined your entire playthrough because you needed X-amont of this item to defeat the monster that's halting progression. -The Evil Within

In Survival games, you're gathering certain food, material, or objects due to a time limit. And if you don't in that time-frame it's a game over screen. -Don't Starve

@7tizz: "What's wrong with extra modes of play in a game?"

The answer I would love to give is "nothing". Sadly, reality proved that the focus on multiplayer normally (slowly) kills the singleplayer part. So to hell with multiplayer.

@7tizz: "no proof MP hurts the SP component"

Dead Space 3, the developer even complained about EA forcing the team to compromise assets and time to be used for multiplayer features. Look it up, they even have an early build of what the team wanted to do for DS3 and it looked fantastic.

The way I see it is if you want a Multiplayer game? Play a game that was intended for muliplayer.

You have plenty of options so stop forcing your personal taste in all games, it eats away developers resources.

The thought that all games should have multiplayer is just as childish as demanding all games be 'openworld'.

Play Overwatch or something_

@7tizz: "What a dumb comment. You have no proof MP hurts the SP component of any game."

ME3... I won...

"The Order 1886 had no MP component and yet it's a terrible SP game."

I didn't said that multiplayer is the "guilty one" for single player bad games. I said "the focus on multiplayer normally (slowly) kills the singleplayer part."

"Also, developers commission separate teams to work on SP and MP components of a title. Each having little input with the other."

Again... I´m not saying there should be no multiplayer, what I'm saying is that single player campaign must be the most important thing in single player games. Sadly, the focus on multiplayer is growing, as the lack of quality in some games as a direct result.

@7tizz: "you have no proof MP hurt the SP portion but even if it did, it's the fault of the developer - not additional modes."

Yup, it is ME. And the proof is on the game itself. At launch you would need the multiplayer to achieve all the goals. The multiplayer makes more money than single player (microtransactions and all that shi...), so the resourses are not all centered on the single campaign, so less quality.

But I agree in one point... at the end of the they the blame is always on the human side, not the number of modes. But lets not forget that the number of modes can change the human side part (the work, dedication, concentration).

"Being happy with less value is just dumb for any consumer to suggest."

Value is a debatable thing. More, sometimes means less. Quantity over quality or quality over quantity? Ok, we want it all... But that´s not what happens in the real world... At least, not with most companies...

@7tizz: Extra modes are within Resident Evil 7, Mad House, Video tape mini games, one even being a card game. But they never change the games focus, when developers do such extreme changes, and practically build two systems in one game, it overall results in a weaker product for lacking a focus.

As for multiplayer in Survival Horror, I'm just guessing you don't play many games in the genre to really understand past failings; either that or you just don't quite get what a Survival Horror game is-

Do you know of Alone in the Dark? Or why the ip is dead now? Last game had multiplayer.

Know why Resident Evil went back to its roots? Resident Evil 5/6s focus on multiplayer

Dead Space 3 being garbage? Multiplayer

The rare exception to this was Resident Evil: Outbreak its concept was the entire game. Its focus of splitting up teams for objectives, so it still feels like a Single-Player experience, you still feel alone in the awful city. However for many it was still a massively flawed game due to it still using tank controls and fixed camera angles.

This game is fine if it wasn't a Resident Evil title. It completely lacks what made all the previous games so great, even 5 and 6 which had a lot of fun co-op gameplay. I appreciate that they are trying to return the franchise back to its horror roots, but other then these scares there's nothing that RE7 will be remembered by, except for maybe Jack who was easily my favorite character.

@RoccoHout: most of the time you're not doing anything fun. That's why I hate this back to its roots BS! RE 4 and 5 revived the franchise. The rest after was crap! Pleasing the GOW and CODs in 6 and the horror fanboys in 7 I think was the wrong direction. RE 4 received high praise. RE 5 sold more than any other. Capcom should've stay with what's not broken. Look at The Evil Within, a game you win and throw in the corner to collect dust. Look at COD and GTA . They never change yet sell millions! Gamers continue to play the, today.I hope to see capcom return to RE 4 and 5. I could play a million times over and over and never get bored. .

in my opinion it won't ever reach that number.RE 2(which was the best selling Survival Horror RE game) only managed to reach 6-7 million units. this sales expectation is as stupid as expecting a Point'n Click adventure game to sell 3 million copies.

@dorog1995: The Evil Within sold 3.5 million copies overall a few years back, so Resi 7 having a more well-known name might at least cap at 5mil.

But. . it's true, Capcom are very stupid thinking this will outsell other modern games that have an actual broad appeal. The glory days of Survival Horror started to decline with the rise of 128-bit consoles (not many bought REmake, Haunting Ground, Silent Hill 3,4, and the Siren series). And Survival Horror has only recently had an invest-able audience return.

Wanting 10 million for something like Monster Hunter is at least in bounds, even if it was a Action Horror Resi like Resi5. But a return to roots Horror game? Nope, thought the game was great but many just can't handle those games.

@sakaixx: Resident Evil 4 is a rare breed, in that it had its own identity that couldn't be replicated without making a flawed product. As much as other games have tried over the years, Resident Evil 4 is on its own level, and from a design perceptive is near flawless. The sales of Resi4 are much deserved.

@sakaixx: Yes and also the fact that RE4 has been on sale for the past 5 years or so!

About 75% of the sales numbers must have been done from when the game was < 15$.

Manageing to pull off almost 4m within the first 6 months while at full retail price is awesome for an horror game which attracts about 25~33% of the gaming population at most.

@silv3rst0rm: Resident Evil 4 was made by Shinji Mikami, a big fan of Romero... a genius who knew what he was doing. Capcom is full of nobody now, manipulated by manager trying to sight profit over game development. They are in the business of making money, they don't give a damn about their quality anymore.

@eva02langley: Absolutely agree. Shinji Mikami was the RE master and as soon as he left Capcom, RE5 came out and lost the original identity....I wonder why.....maybe because the original visionary left and another brain cannot bring the same exact focus/experience that Mikami brought? Same can be said for the horrid RE6 and good but not quite "Resi" RE7... Nobody can match the identity that Shinji Mikami brought to RE...NOBODY. Because it was HIS vision...it's like trying to get an artist to recreate a specific vision of another artist...you can't.. 2 different brains and 2 completely different outlooks even if the 2 people are alike..

That's why Capcom fails to make these games into classics....because they're trying to mimic what Shinji Mikami did instead of using their own unique vision... I want Resident Evil to go back to it's original ways COMPLETELY...But I know that will never get fully matched without Shinji Mikami....the specific music at the right time, the specific camera angles, the specific timing of how things happen, EVERYTHING. It's his creation....and no one can bring back the exact flavor he brought because it was HIS flavor. They need Shinji Mikami back or RE will keep trying to become something it's not until people stop caring altogether...
