Resident Evil 2 Remake Sales Hit A New Milestone

4 million shipped.

The Resident Evil 2 remake continues to perform well commercially. The game has now shipped 4 million copies globally, Capcom announced in a news release today. This is up from the 3 million copies that the game shipped during its first week.

The increased sales of Resident Evil 2 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC pushed total Resident Evil franchise sales to more than 90 million units since the series debuted in 1996 as of February 26, 2019. This is up from 88 million units back in January.

The 1998 original Resident Evil 2 reached sales of 4.96 million copies to stand as the fourth best-selling Resident Evil game, so the remake is coming up on that milestone.

Resident Evil 2's free DLC, Ghost Survivors, was released on February 15. GameSpot's Resident Evil 2 review called it "a terrifying experience like no other."

"Resident Evil 2 is not only a stellar remake of the original, but it's also simply a strong horror game that delivers anxiety-inducing and grotesque situations, topping some of the series' finest entries," wrote critic Alessandro Fillari. "But above all, the remake is an impressive game for the fact that it goes all-in on the pure survival horror experience, confidently embracing its horrifying tone and rarely letting up until the story's conclusion."

Its a good game and an enjoyable experience. I say that as someone who isn't particularly a fan of the series too. I bought the game on a whim, and really enjoyed it.

The game is great, but it is short AF. Got everything in less then 20 hours of game, including the gatling gun and rocket launcher.

Resident evil 3 would feel like a DLC rather then a full game. Since you'll get only one scenario and 0 reason to replay it.

@everson_rm: I'm pretty sure in case they decide to release the remake of RE3, it won't be just Jill's story. They will come up with something new and fresh as well. Just like both remakes, RE1 and RE2, had plenty of surprises.

yeah i really wish this doesnt fuel the remake craze more. as a person who can still easily play games like psx re 2 or 3 or this and that i hate the idea someone in capcom will be thinking should we make re8 or re3 remake. even if they were made by separate studios even then the re3 remake team could do something brand new.

imo remakes are popular because they arent designed around microtransactions and other modern crap. thats the main thing. anthem vs re2 ok re2 wins but if anthem was an actual epic story game that pushes the boundaries of gaming it sure would do better

RE2 Remake was good, but I am really craving a sequel to RE7 in the same style. First person horror works really well and feels intense, and the level of detail they put into that game while maintaining fidelity was amazing. Nobody else has done anything quite like that up to this point and it would be a shame to leave it alone. There was Dementium on DS and Outlast more recently but Capcom's take is ahead of the game, they need to continue.

@girlusocrazy: Yea, I mean I really enjoyed 7 especially after its two predecessors, but man 'o man do I not like FP perspective. I really think RE2 remake hit the nail on the head for the most part and would love to see Resi 8 done in a similar fashion.

@decadentdescent: Aw the FP is what makes it for me. I don't think I would have enjoyed RE7 in third person nearly as much. The idea that it happens to you and you're there in it goes a long way. Going down those hallways and not knowing what's around the corner, and not even knowing what's behind you! In third person it's fine but it loses a lot of immersion and personality for me.

Perhaps it's different when you have a fleshed out protagonist and you have a good idea what they look like and what their personality is, but in RE7 I have no idea what the guy looks like and what his personality is, and so then much more of what I think and feel is then considered part of the game in my mind.

Maybe in RE2 you really want to see Leon and Claire and it's all about those characters, but you don't get that in RE7, and I don't even know if they'd come up with any interesting protagonists in future games. Personally I'd rather have more of that immersion and sense of being there like with RE7, and all the personality comes from the characters around you and the locations themselves.

I'd be happy if they both continued to remake the older games in the style of RE2 remake and then continued with RE8 in the style of 7. As much as I loved 7 from the beginning and felt it was a GotY, (and being a huge fan of PT and that style), my love for it skyrocketed after I tried it in VR. I *need* more of that. It was so good!!! I'd love it with or without VR and I'd feel let down if I didn't get more of that style from Capcom either way.

Pardon my long rambling.

Awesome news!

See what happens when you give gamers what they want.

?

Even though it came out a month ago RE2 remake is so well crafted that I still find myself being pulled to it (even with all the recent game releases.). That’s how good it is!

IMO, it’s up there with the best the franchise has to offer and hopefully all the continued commercial success will prompt Capcom to revisit some of the other earlier entries (or perhaps a new installment.) with the same kind of model employed.

Capcom has been my favorite gaming company since I started gaming 22+ years ago. I've continued to support em through their ups and some of their worst downs. It's really cool to see them getting things back in motion.

@RELeon: I read in an interview with the lead guys on the RE2 Remake go on the record saying that if they see success with this one & if there is fan demand, that RE3 Remake is certainly a possibility. I agree, I hope they choose to reinvent the RE3 wheel, only I hope this time, along with Jill, I hope Carlos or hell, Barry Burton gets a 2nd story line similar to Leon & Claires various play through campaigns. I loved that idea, and would like to see it used more as they go forward!!

If this was EA or Activision, this would be UNDER expectations........ we need to get back to a state where 500'000 - 1'000'000 copies sold is perfectly acceptable sales figures.

@nyran125tk: Exactly. And for a niche genre, those sales ain't bad at all, either (Resident Evil is a big name though).

@rekonym: I dunno. A LOT of people didn't like Mr.X and that's pretty much what RE3 is all about. I could see it becoming an expansion for RE2make and not a full fledged game. They've also stated an interest in bringing back Outbreak. Revelations 3 is also supposed to have been in development for years now.

@Barighm: That's just a very subjective statement, as A LOT of people liked Mr. X as well. If you play the game a couple of times, you can easily see that he's manageable and avoidable. He can't enter many rooms and you can trick him by walking slowly instead of running. If anything, he's fun and has made the game very entertaining!

@Barighm: **** 'em. Plenty of games they can be playing. Stuff like Nemesis and Mr. X (and Alien Isolation, and Dead Space's Ubermorph) are created with the understanding that not everybody is going to like it - it's for those that do.

I don't mean that agressively btw, I'm just explaining the rationale behind the "unkillable stalker enemy" scenario design. A certain type of audience sees it just as a pain in the ass, whereas other people like that desperation / vulnerablity / challenge or however you want to describe it.

@rekonym: That should be good, but I am over just hoping that Capcom gets the message about what kind of NEW RE games to make. How great would a RE8 be that was similar in gameplay and tone to RE2make?

@Poodger: Apparently Capcom has no intention of doing RE8 until they've finished their current run of remakes/remasters. They stated this; however, plans can change, so that doesn't really mean that much.
