Resident Evil 2 Remake Confirmed

Survival-horror classic is being remade for PS4, Xbox One, and PC by team behind Resident Evil HD Remaster.

Capcom is remaking PlayStation One survival-horror classic Resident Evil 2 for modern consoles.

A video announcing the project reveals it is being headed up by Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, producer of the Resident Evil HD Remaster released in January 2015, and Capcom R&D Division 1.

Speaking in the video, Hirabayashi said the project was given the go ahead "thanks to your incredible passion and support."

He continues: "You've been telling us for years that you want Resident Evil 2 to be remade, and we haven't been able to make it happen... until now! We at R&D Division 1 will do our best to take on your feedback and deliver the gameplay experience you've been waiting for."

Hirabayashi's statement indicate the project is in the very early stages of development and "it will be some time before [Capcom] can bring you an update on this project."

It is likely the decision to remake Resident Evil 2 is a response to the fan-made Resident Evil 2 remake, which developed a following from series enthusiasts and caught Capcom's eye. On July 30, 2015, Capcom asked fans for their opinions on a Resident Evil 2 remake, indicating it was considering the undertaking itself.

A day later, Hirabayashi confirmed he had pitched Resident Evil 2 HD to his boss, the results of which have now been revealed.

Capcom has issued a statement regarding the remake to VideoGamer: "We're pleased to confirm that Resident Evil 2 has been approved for development," a representative said.

"As the title is only just starting its development cycle we unfortunately don't have any additional information or assets to share at this time.

"For now we want our fans to know that we appreciate all the feedback and support we've received on this title. We're looking forward to delivering this highly anticipated Resident Evil experience that fans have been waiting for."

Although specific release platforms are yet to be announced, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC are likely candidates. The site also says it "understands the title will be a complete remake of the original game."

Remakes of classics have proven to be a big success for Capcom. The company highlighted re-releases as a "key business activity" in a financial briefing, going so far as to say it intends on pursuing more in the future.

"HD remasters of our catalogue hit titles will be one of our key business activities ... [digital sales] created new demand for these titles. For example, overseas download sales of "Resident Evil" (HD Remastered) in the past fiscal year were far higher than we expected.

"It is not a risk but rather the growth of the download sales channel gives users more options. We regard this as growth in opportunities to have allow access for more people to enjoy our games."

Resident Evil HD Remaster was released in January 20 on consoles and PC, and broke sales records for Capcom, becoming the fastest selling digital title in the company's history across North America and Europe. To follow this up, Capcom announced the remaster of Gamecube exclusive Resident Evil Zero.

So Capcom wants to act like the change.org petition had nothing to do with the reconsideration to remake RE2?...

I just want RE3 remastered. Literally the only necessary thing from Capcom for me.

it's about sales. When RE0 and Remake came out on Gamecube I bought the system just for those games... yet the sales were horrible, that it why RE2 has taken this long to come it's current development. Capcom is terrible at reading the market, those games failed because they were on the wrong system. Both RE0 and Remake were great games, just on the wrong child oriented Nintendo system. If RE2 sells amazingly well, then they'll probably do RE3 as well. Capcom along with other major developers of console games seem to have predicted everything will rely on the 'social' aspects of modern life, so they tool all their games for online gameplay now and forego most of the mystery and suspense which made pre-online gaming so immersive and memorable.

I think a certain mainstream percentage does care about social online aspects of gaming, but I'd dare to guess that an overwhelming majority of console gamers are more private and just don't care about online, they might go online after the fact to discuss gaming but don't care about playing online socially or for multiplayer aspects.

@yixingtpot: I really don't. PC/Video gaming has always been a solitary experience for me. Online portions of Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Demon's Souls are perhaps the only examples to the contrary, where I enjoy the multiplayer aspect, but I can still take it or leave it, I enjoy those games immensely even without it. Co-op is also not what I am after.

I much prefer to (and have to, in this case) play a pen and paper RPG game with friends, or a tabletop game of some kind. If there is a story involved in a computer/console game, I want to experience it on my own, at my own pace. Other players would just be a distraction.

@yixingtpot: Shinji Mikami said that his team (back when he still worked at Capcom) really wanted to remake RE2 after the RE1 Remake, but they had to focus on finishing RE4 first, and then he quit Capcom right after that game was finally done.

I wish they'd make Resident Evil Outbreak 3 and release an HD collection. They probably won't as those games haven't proved popular, which is because they were ahead of their time. But I hope when they run out of titles to remake they see the new audience of original Resident Evil-style games they have made as a good reason to remake Outbreak as it's in that style as well. It's sad Capcom thought core Resident Evil games would not sell but look at what broke sales records for them. The heads are proving delusional. I hope they take cue and make future titles in the original style.

Capcom today is a follower who only walks the tried, beaten paths and don't try to be different, confident, and passionate. They can't compete with CoD by copying because CoD simply does arcade action shooting better. Don't they know there are tons of gamers looking for unique games? They need to be passionate and confident in your own unique ideas again. May be they need new talented employees and heads that know what real quality is and know quality games sell based on their creativity and confidence that don't need fan reassurance for everything. That's just pathetic and cowardly. They need to be great again and be a proud leader known for extraordinary games.

@silenthill870: I realize this is an ancient comment but I 100% agree. Instead of these crappy shooter style online resident evils I wish they would go back to the Outbreak format. Which as you said failed for simply being ahead of it's time.
They should at least try re-releasing an hd upscale version to test it out. I still remember my last match the day the servers went down. Oh good times, and an awesome community.

Honestly, the real reason they quickly hopped on this remake of 2 is because of the fan made resident evil 2 " reborn" game that's coming to pc. We fans simply asked capcom for years for a remake of 2 and we were ignored . It took the dedication and commitent of it's fan base to make their own version while capcom was too busy putting out call of duty resident evil titles. Probably saw it as a threat to their brand somehow and decided to quickly announce an official version . Kind of lame actually. Nonetheless, happy that resident evil 2 is getting an official remake because it's the best resident evil game imo

@donnyten: I'm pretty sure a cease and desist will be issued to the fanmade game that's just about to be completed, they will be pulling off the "SquareEnix" which is sad because they knew a RE2 remaster would be successful long ago

BOY WAS I WRONG, 2 CDs for the Playstation of pure Resident Evil zomb-opera, that was some 20 years ago. And now they are doing a remake??!!! Oh boy, I am 36 years old, and feeling 16 again, this is just too much!! Drool:) <3 <3

Resident Evil 2 sounds really good. Considering the number of genres that Capcom makes, you can always count on it being a good title. Besides graphically I was thinking if the game would introduce any new storyline, dialogue, and characters? Remakes are good, I was just wondering some differences that wouldn't necessarily be on the playstation 1 console.

Reading the first few comments, it appears that people are excited about this for reasons that mystify me.

RE2 was a decent enough game for it's time, but personally I think the remake/remaster generation is out of control. Way to many new versions of good but not great games from previous generations and not nearly enough NEW GAMES.

Avatar image for RSM-HQ
RSM-HQ

@BeefoTheBold: I understand your opinion, however this is no means new to this generation. If a game is considered critically decent it has a chance to be revived and improved.

Are people quick to forget Turtles in Time ReShelled, Spelunker, The first Resident Evil Remake. D00M 64, Monkey Island Special Edition, Super Contra. I could name way more; going to give you the benefit of the doubt that further examples would be irrelevant.

Remakes, are not just made for the original fans, but towards a younger potential fanbase that may want to see what the deal is all about.

I'm certainly a younger gamer that played many of those remakes; and surprised me on the quality put in.

Remakes are also a chance to bring back the original developers to improve that project with heart and dedication.

Won't lie, I love Remakes for the most part. They're some of the best games I find to play. & chances are I never played the original :)

You are free to dislike remakes, none the less. For people like me, they're refreshing and welcome.

Avatar image for BeefoTheBold

@RSM-HQ:

Thanks for the measured and polite response back!

I can totally understand where you're coming from with your examples. Perhaps it IS confirmation bias on my part, but it seems to me that there have been way more remakes this generation than in previous ones. This bothers me as a gamer because if I was interested in a game that came out previously, I'd have already bought and played it.

So, just for me, remasters are nothing more than a waste of time and resources to develop that COULD be spent on developing the next game that I want to play. I'm not interested in playing Darksiders 1 and 2 again with a slightly new coat of paint. I want to play Darksiders 3 and see how the story ends. (Opportunity Cost)

I suspect it has something to do with the risk associated with doing new games as development costs rise. Remakes are likely considered to be "safer" to put out which is why you see games that would have questionable need for remastered versions (see Castle Crushers from yesterday, a game that I think would not really benefit much if at all from a fresh coat of paint) and to me come across as nothing more than cash-ins. Selling the game again for a quick buck.

To me, remakes and remasters should be limited to these factors factors:

1. All-time great games - preferably ones that are more than a few years old which leads me to factor #2

2. Games that would clearly benefit from some updating, whether through more modern controls or much improved visuals and

Whereas mostly what I'm seeing from this generation of remasters is essentially ports of games from the PS3/360 generation with a slightly new coat of paint slapped on but otherwise are only a couple of years old. It's really nothing but an excuse to sell the same game again by PORTING it and calling it "the definitive edition". At a quick glance...

Last of Us Remastered., Master Chief Collection, Dynasty Warriors 8: Complete Edition, Darksiders Deathinitive Edition, DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition, Final Fantasy Type-0 HD Remastered, Grand Theft Auto V Remastered, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, Dead or Alive 5: Last Round, God of War 3 Remastered, Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey New and Tasty, Metro Redux, Injustice: God's Among Us - Definitive Edition, Warriors Orochi 3: Ultimate, Borderlands 2: Handsome Collection, Toukiden: Kiwami, Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition, Dark Souls II: Sins of the First Scholar, Final Fantasy X/X2 HD Remastered, Devil May Cry 4 Remastered

There is a lot more than this, particularly if we start adding in the Nintendo 1st party remasters, but I'm sure you get the idea.

Avatar image for RSM-HQ
RSM-HQ

@BeefoTheBold: I believe Remakes and Remasters are quite different. As remasters are the new name for late ports. As you even stated "port" is definitely the word.

If we look up D00M for example, you can find that game even on watches and calculators. Probably spawned over 50 ports now.

Remakes however are built from the ground up with the spirit of the original game. I understand the confusion because it's becoming more and more vague what a remaster actually is.

However, Remakes can be a new experience. For example the Resident Evil Remake which has changed quite a lot from the 32-bit generation. I've tried the older game on Nintendo DS and it really is a whole other game.

Am I a fan of remasters? For the most part, no. Too recent are these fancy names for ports. I can't understand who actually wants Devil May Cry 4 or Prototype on the (next-gen) systems. However I do understand older games than those. Say DreamCast or even older with a Neo Geo. Why people buy these is anyones guess. I'm not going to go into it more because ones garbage is another's treasure.

Both concepts I guess are still a developers easy option. That I also agree. They already have the layout/ designs/ and world done, it's a safe bet. Though I wouldn't see it so vaguely. Remakes are essentially new games with an old spice, because they have to build on the original and not mess it up :)

So yeah, remasters "booo"; remasters from 10 year old games (or older) "hmm", Remakes built from the ground up "Yay".

Resident Evil 2 Remake; is a remake. Now we will see if it holds the test of time rebuilding this dated classic for a new generation. If it's anything like Resi Remake? I'll be a happy cat :3

Nice chatting with you.

Avatar image for gxgxgf

@BeefoTheBold: then don't buy them? Why ruin peoples fun because of your warped (and dumb) opinion? "omgz too many gamezz". A few remakes get made and the "omg there's too many" crowd start spamming comments. Look on Steam - the new games outweigh remakes by 1:30 idiot.

Avatar image for BeefoTheBold

@gxgxgf:

I wasn't aware that my single isolated comment in an internet thread was so powerful! I am ruining peoples' fun you say by having an opinion? Wow. What fragile creatures people like you must be.

First "idiot" your comment to just "look on Steam" is "dumb" because Steam shoots out Indie games by the hundreds, which are in no way synonymous with triple A games by a major developer.

Second, I have no intention of buying this. My comment that you're replying to that got your panties in such a twist was politely worded and an opinion, and you're an ass for overreacting to it in the extreme way you did. Disagree? Feel free! Buy all the remakes you want.

Until Capcom actually figures out how to make games again it might be best if they don't waste time trying to do something new and interesting anyway.
