Report: Microsoft bringing Windows to robots, talking bears, and coffee mugs

New website "Windows on Devices" briefly launches before being pulled down; full announcement could happen today during Build conference.

It seems Microsoft has major--and surprising--plans for its Windows operating system. A new website called Windows on Devices briefly appeared last night, revealing that Microsoft is "bringing Windows to a whole new class of small devices."

Microsoft has since pulled the site down, redirecting you to a blank Windows Azure page. According to WhoIs records, Microsoft purchased the website on March 26 this year.

The Verge was able to capture some information from the Windows on Devices website before it disappeared, noting that Microsoft plans to bring a version of Windows to things like a "smart coffee mug," a talking bear, and robots.

The site also reportedly stated that Microsoft plans to demonstrate a life-sized piano presumably running on Windows today during its keynote address at the developer-minded Build conference in San Francisco. Microsoft's keynote address today at Build starts at 11:30 a.m. EDT.

The Verge notes that it's possible "Windows on Devices" is the name of Microsoft's operating system for its rumored line of smartwatches and Google Glass-like eyewear. Last month, Google announced Android Wear, its own OS designed for smartwatches.

Huge fan of windows........pre windows 8 that is. Oh XP how I miss you. Seriously though kinda makes me wish Apple never existed, maybe then we wouldn't have had the whole "app" B.S. in windows 8 and other devices. I know opinions vary about windows operating systems but I sure do miss the good old desktop only days.

Be very afraid if you get a robot running windows. It might malfunction and kill you without a day one update. It will also connect to Microsoft's Azure Cloud and store all your personal info if it didn't kill you first.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The only way it will crash and kill you is if you were standing next to it as it falls. Just keep a good distance when you see its movement slowing, and you should be fine...

<< LINK REMOVED >> Anyone remember the story way back in the late 90s about that US naval ship that used Windows NT and experienced a failure causing it to end up being towed back to port? :)

I didn't research it now to see how accurate the blame on NT was, but it was a funny story anyway. I did see some mentions of many other problems around that time due to the Navy trying to switch everything over to NT. Apparently years later they cancelled that and went back to UNIX.

Not exactly comparable to Windows of today :). just a little historical footnote.

Sounds interesting, but I hate Windows linking everything together. I'm not one of those Apple zealots, that needs everything white, as cool as they are.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I do like some things with Metro. I basically set it up to have my news, weather, and sports updates within a few clicks away. I also like quick access to my Xbox Music, Hulu, and Netflix apps. Also, using Smartglass has been beneficial, especially with Battlefield 4 with my monitor working as its own map screen. I also get notifications for Xbox messages as well that chime to both of my PCs. However, some things are tedious. I hate the mobile like Internet Explorer for instance.

So, with some more effort, I do think it has its place. They should allow the choice to have Metro running in the background for those who don't want it though. This way, they don't alienate the folks who liked Windows as it is, but the option is there if Microsoft persuades new uses that motivate those people to start using it.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I think Metro can survive if they can figure out how to connect all of their devices into a basic format, which is the whole point of Metro. I don't mind its existence, and with 8.1, I don't even find it obtrusive. It's a big change for sure, but there's potential in what they're trying to do. I also know that changes in technology shouldn't always be given up on based on initial reactions. There are a ton shit of flops that later became the norm. Someone has to take the risk. I think companies today are playing it way too safe for the most part.
