Report: Beyond Good & Evil 2 on the way

Michel Ancel tells French magazine he has been working on the game for a year, although Ubisoft is yet to give the project the official nod.

Ever since Beyond Good & Evil came out to wide critical acclaim but little commercial success in 2003, fans of the game have been begging for more.

Michel Ancel, Rayman creator and man behind the original Beyond Good & Evil, has said in an interview with French magazine JeuxVideo, "I am working on Beyond Good & Evil 2. We have been in preproduction on the title for a year, and we're currently doing market research. But for the moment, it's in the early stages, and Ubisoft still hasn't agreed to it."

Ancel, who still works as a designer for Ubisoft, said that 10 to 12 people were working on the project, and although he didn't mention platforms or a time frame, he did talk a little about the gameplay. He said, "We want to be in continuity with the first game, with a big variety of levels, lots of emotion in the gameplay, and characters we care about. This time we are dealing with planet Hillys' future, and the relationship with animals...."

The first Beyond Good & Evil came out on the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC platforms. Gamers played photographer-for-hire Jade, who looks after children who have been orphaned by the DomZ, an alien race which is attacking her planet, Hillys. In her work, she soon discovers a conspiracy between quasi-military force the Alpha Sections, who claim to be helping defend the planet, and the DomZ. It combined action adventure gameplay with stealth elements.

The article finishes by saying that it hopes that Ubisoft will give the project the green light, and that perhaps it will be using the upcoming Ubidays at the end of this month to do so.

It would be great if in the meantime, Microsoft could get the Original Xbox version patched to work on my 360. I'd love to play through it again before the sequel is released. It'd be even cooler if BGE2 could check for saved data from the original.

I always wished for a sequel to Beyond Good and Evil, and if Ubisoft does agree to it, then our wishes came true. About time some underrated games get the sequels they deserve.

Come on Ubisoft, BGE has needed a sequel ever since the very last scene of the first game. It'll be a no-brainer purchase for me, if it does become a reality.

Beyond good and evil in two words - suprisingly awesome! I remember picking this game up for a severly discounted price from HMV. I wasnt really hoping for much, but as I played through the game, it just really grew on me. One of the best buys I ever made on the PS2.

This is GREAT NEWS!!!! BGaE was one of my favorite games from the last gen; creative story, environments and characters, solid gameplay, and an ending that screamed sequel. I just hope UBI does the this version justice and markets it like a AAA title deserves to be.

Thank you Ubisoft for finally hearing my prayers! I have been waiting for a sequel to the hideously underrated classic for years. Now all I ask is that you PLEASE throw some money into advertising the hell out of this game! Treat this as you would Rainbow Six or Splinter Cell. I can't imagine how sweet this would look on PS3 or XBox 360.

Wow, I'm wonderfully surprised by this article. Beyond Good and Evil was a great game, albeit one that didn't seem to click with the mass market for some reason (which I never really understood). Hopefully the franchise gets a second chance to shine, this time with a better marketing plan or something. Seriously, why did this game do so badly? I mean, it wasn't nearly as neglected in terms of marketing as, say, Psychonauts. Perplexing.

THANK YOU!!!! I feel Beyond good and Evil deserves a sequel. the 1st game was fun and hilarious. It was also overlooked and that was a shame. Now if only psychonauhts 2 would get a sequel that would be awesome news as well.

Let's just hope, the game get high production values and good advertising. MS should keep their eyes opened because the X360 could surely use such a kind of game.

Holy DomZ! I never thought I'd see a sequel to this game. The game was a pleasant and enjoyable experience. Characters, voice acting and storytelling were all well done. Combat was o.k. and graphics were very eye pleasing.

One more thing about the original game - it had THE best text entry system for a console game bar none. Instead of some stupid keyboard layout on the screen you hunt around on, the letters and numbers were arranged in a looping 'helix' that you navigated using the thumb stick. I'm not sure who tweaked it or tested it, but they nailed the speed and acceleration to make it work. You could enter data FAR faster using that than using the hunt and click keyboard style screen. At least I could. I'm surprised that I haven't seen more games copy BG&E's system.

I'm very happy to hear that there's a chance we'll get a sequel. The original game ended on a definite 'more story to come' kind of feel. Beyond Good and Evil really nailed the style marks I think. The music, art style, characters, setting, everything. The gameplay was fun too. Not rediculously challenging or anything, but it was fun and looked good and had a lot of variety. The weird rolling marble mini-game that you could unlock was a perfect idea for the dual thumbstick controller. I definitely recommend checking this game out if you haven't. It's not perfect, but its definitely one of those games you remember fondly long after you finished it.

Trust me... if Monolith had the legal right to use the FEAR name, Project Origin would be called FEAR2. The whole reason publishers glom on to sequels is because of the intrinsic sales benefit of having that name - without the name, a "From the makers of..." tagline on the box would be just as good. It'd be like saying GTA IV would scare away fewer new customers by calling itself "Liberty City" Which... no.

They should change the title of the game so that it can attract MORE people to buy it. It should be something that PROJECT ORIGIN is doing, which is a sequel to F.E.A.R. but still attracts new gamers.
