Removing Superman's Mustache From Justice League Is No Easy Task

Hair we go....

Last week it was reported that DC was spending $25 million on reshoots for the upcoming superhero team-up Justice League. However, the most curious news wasn't the cost, it was that Superman actor Henry Cavill will be reshooting his scenes with a full mustache, which will then have to be digitally removed in post-production. Now more details of the process involved have emerged.

No Caption Provided

Cavill is currently filming Mission: Impossible 6, for which he has grown the facial hair. The extensive Justice League reshoot schedule means that Cavill will have to work on both movies simultaneously, leaving Warner no option but to edit the moustache out of his Justice League scenes. In an interview with Business Insider, VFX expert Dave Fleet explained the complexity of digital facial hair removal.

"If we were to remove a beard [or mustache], we would have to digitally re-build the actor's face behind the hair mass," he said. "We would need to build a 3D model of the face and then shade the surface of the skin to look realistic. We would then need to track the 3D model to the movement of his head and potentially re-animate his mouth. The amount of lip animation would depend on how much of the original beard occluded his lips. We would need to paint out the parts of the beard that extend beyond his shaven face."

Fleet went on to explain that it can take up to six weeks to edit a moustache out of a one=minute clip. It is unknown how much footage Cavill needs to reshoot, but it goes without saying that many fans will be watching his top lip carefully when the film arrives in November.

Cavill himself also commented on the issue this week, with a jokey post on Instagram. He stated: "There has been no discussion over whether to shave or not to shave for the JL reshoots, simply a relentless campaign to put an end to the seemingly inexorable conquest of this despotic 'stache. It is not a question of IF I should shave--it is a question of how can we possibly be victorious against such a beast without bringing our own doom raining down upon us."

In May, Joss Whedon took over from original director Zack Snyder who stepped down following the tragic death of his daughter.

Justice League stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as Flash, and Ray Fisher as Cyborg. The film also has Amber Heard as Mera, JK Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Ciaran Hinds as Steppenwolf. A new trailer premiered at San Diego Comic-Con last week--you can check it out here.

what a shock, a movie studio doesn't bother to read the actual source material...wow...i mean, what a shock.

If these geniuses had bothered to pick up the death of superman run, they would realize that when he comes back to life, he has a full beard. Now if they had Cavill simply grow out his facial hair, he could have kept the mustache, and had a beard, and none of this would have been needed....but Hollywood...YAY!!

Morons, its no wonder the best we can get these days are reboots and superhero movies.

They just spent $25 million on something they could have got for a day and a half of facial hair growth and $5 dollars worth of shaving cream. How do these people run anything...I wouldnt let them near a lemonade stand.

@gamersince78: He couldn't shoot Mission Impossible with a beard, and he's already shot many scenes clean shaven for Justice League.

So, the make-up sector hasn't evolved since the fifties? Why not create some life like moustaches as a part of the actors mask?

Wouldn't it be easier to digitally add a mustache to him in Mission Impossible? Or have him wear a fake one?

@P00DGE: This is true, but his schedule is booked for Mission Impossible first, and thus takes priority. Wouldn't be fair that Mission Impossible has to accommodate for Justice League. Contracts take precedence too

@Welverin: Haha solid point, I admit. But if the MI producers want the real deal, and its already stated in his contract, then they're entitled to it.

@Terminator95: Kiddie? LOL well we are talking about comic book superheroes. Is that supposed to be serious business? Speaking of kiddie, notice how those Justice League trailers have enough jokes to fill an entire entry in the MCU? I sure did. Seems like DC fanboys are suddenly thrilled with that. Gee, I wonder why...lol.

@frank_castle: I doubt Thor will even out gross Wonder Woman. I highly doubt it'll match her domestic numbers seeing as it's nearing $400 million in the USA and The Dark World managed barely half that on $206 million.

Hard to say what the box office numbers for Justice League will be, Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman left a sour taste, but Wonder Woman seems to have rectified a lot of this. Thor 3 to open bigger than its predecessor ($85.7 million) and may top Wonder Woman's $103 million opening but I doubt it'll have the legs. Justice League will likely be a bigger event film and could have both the opening of Batman V Superman and the legs of Wonder Woman. Time will tell and it all depends on how it's received.

@shadowwarrior4: Because the scenes they are shooting are reshoots or added scenes. So you'll end up with a film where Superman has a moustache and then the next scene he doesn't. Could end up looking a little odd.

@craigtl: You are not understanding.

He films JL in which he is clean shaven.

He finishes that, then goes on to film MI. In that movie he grows a stache.

JL calls him saying they need to do some reshoots.

@ggsimmonds: I understand completely, but what I am saying is, it seems very tedious and more costly to digitally remove the stache in his JL reshoots then to simply have him shave it. Then when he goes back to shoot MI they can have a makeup artist put it back on. Plus by that time a day or two goes by the stache will start to grow back anyway and the makeup artist would simply have to make sure it looks full. Unless its a situation where he is shooting both daily then it gets tedious no matter what.

@craigtl: This is what I am thinking this whole time. As an actor, you have to make sacrifices sometimes to your face for movies and stuff like that. Adding fcking hair to a shaven face is easy as sh!t to do. FFS, if the man wants to play Superman, he has to have a shaven face. That is who superman is, he has a shaved face. I honestly think he would 'SUPER' shitty witha beard or a mustache. If he needs a beard or mustache for any other role, that can be added through many means.

Just think, all that money being wasted to digitally rebuild faces could have been used to hire competent writers and directors.

And since wonder woman got so much praise despite the ridiculous over use of slo-mo, expect about 30 minutes of total slo-mo action in JL as well.
