Remedy on making Alan Wake

DICE 2010: Finnish studio's president Matias Myllyrinne discusses the "method behind our madness" during the psychological thriller's half-decade in development.

Has Remedy Entertainment really not shipped a game since October 2003? "Some of your parents may remember our last game, Max Payne 2," joked Matias Myllyrinne, president of the Finnish studio at his DICE Summit session this afternoon. However, with Alan Wake now set for a May 18 release, the designer took the stage to explain why it has taken so long to make the psychological horror game. "We'll discuss the method behind our madness," he declared.

First off, Myllyrinne said Alan Wake's long development cycle would not have been possible without the support of Microsoft. The company's backing is "letting us punch above our own weight," said an effusively thankful Myllyrinne. He did not mention that as part of that support, the PC version of the now Xbox 360-exclusive game was put on indefinite hold last year.

Alan Wake's character has evolved over five years into a more tired, paranoid figure.
Alan Wake's character has evolved over five years into a more tired, paranoid figure.

Remedy's principles are at the key of its development, and first among these is the core value of "focus." Myllyrinne said that this results in better games. He declared he'd rather ship a game that sells 4 million units every four years than release a game that sells 1 million units every year.

Another key principle is "people" at Remedy, which uses a smaller team than most AAA developers. They focus on multitalented people from all over the world: One Danish game designer has a background in drama, and a Brazilian level designer has a degree in psychology, which came in handy on Alan Wake.

To get the most out of his smaller staff, Myllyrinne encourages active--sometimes even heated--debate between coworkers because new ideas can arise from conflict. Remedy has also invested heavily in tools and technology, allowing for maximum worker productivity. As a result, Myllyrinne said only "three or four" members of the core Alan Wake team left during the game's development.

Finally, Remedy has a focus on branding and is very involved with the game's marketing. Myllyrinne said he wants every ad to make viewers feel like they're in a thriller.

Wheeling to Alan Wake in particular, Myllyrinne said that they set out to make a scary game and deliberately modeled the town of Bright Falls after TV's fictional hamlet of Twin Peaks. However, the game's three stages of development--preproduction, production, and the extensive postproduction Remedy is known for--ended up taking nearly twice as long as originally planned. Myllyrinne joked this was "taking the long road home."

That's not a hallucination--Alan Wake will finally ship to stores in May.
That's not a hallucination--Alan Wake will finally ship to stores in May.

Luckily, Remedy had enough Max Payne money and Microsoft support to bulk up to cope with the increased demands of current-generation console games. Although still small, the shop has increased payroll by 10-15 percent each year and uses outsourcing and freelancers extensively. As an example, two companies--one in Los Angeles and the other in Germany--are handling the game's sound design.

The character of Alan Wake has evolved as well, going from an outdoorsman of sorts to a tired, more paranoid figure. To make him as realistic as possible--something Myllyrinne feels is key in a thriller--they primarily used many concept photos instead of concept art for his character.

For Alan Wake's enemies, they wanted them to seem "just a bit off." To give the enemies a ghostly edge, they poured water on the concept drawings and let the ink run. This results in the shadowy, blurry figures that can be seen in the game's trailers.

Remedy also decided to reuse some elements from Max Payne 2 for what they call "near-miss moments." When an enemy attacks Alan Wake and nearly hits him, the action slows and then the camera angle changes. A brief demo showed the dramatic effect of these moments, especially when Max Payne pulls a flare out to vanquish a group of enemies in what Myllyrinne called "a Statue of Liberty moment."

Light will be a player's main weapon in Alan Wake, be it in the form of a flashlight or a blinding safety flare.
Light will be a player's main weapon in Alan Wake, be it in the form of a flashlight or a blinding safety flare.

All the aforementioned elements were shown together in a demo called the "Harvester of Sorrow," in which Alan Wake is attacked by a possessed grain combine that he must fend off with a flashlight. Once the shadowy driver takes enough damage, the machine disintegrates in a burst of shadow.

Myllyrinne said another big plus on Alan Wake development was the user testing assistance lent by Microsoft. So far, the game's controller scheme has been changed 18 times, and Myllyrinne thinks it will be 20 by the time it ships.

Remedy also gradually phased out the game's heads-up display for greater realism, including dumping a speedometer that appeared during driving sequences. "This isn't Need for Speed, so we didn't really need that."

Alan Wake's world is 10-by-10 kilometers of fully modeled terrain, based on over 60,000 photos taken in the Pacific Northwest. The Oregon town of Astoria was a particular inspiration, as was the state's Crater Lake National Park.

Unfortunately, Myllyrinne said the decision to make the game an open-world sandbox was a poor one and had to ultimately be scaled back. The advantage of a more linear story is that it allows for better pacing and emotional resonance. It also prevents jarring incongruity that could arise from random events. "When you have a guy show up to a love scene in a monster truck, you know something is wrong," Myllyrinne joked.

To help keep the game's development on track, Remedy would do intense work for five weeks and then every sixth week celebrate and focus on planning for the next phase. "You have to celebrate the small victories," said Myllyrinne in conclusion. When Alan Wake ships exactly three months from now, Remedy will be celebrating a big one.

I would of liked to play this game but its a impossibility since they canceled the PC edition. I don't plan on shelling out over 300 bucks to play one video game, even that mech war game for the first xbox didn't cost that much.

@saturo123 If you look at it numbers only then yes, BUT if you look at it from a developers point of view... If you make one game that sells one million copies, and the market share for that genre is say maybe 12 million. You have 1/12 which is less than 10% of that market share. Now say in that same market you made a game that did sell 4 million instead. 4/12 = 1/3 or 33% of that market share. having 33% of a single market audience base = lotsa cash and making a damn good game. You have better success when putting out one good game than multiple so-so games which do not return good value for your company...

"the pc is over. hd games are meant to be played on a HDTV 42+ tv with surround sound. stop whining." or how about a 36" computer monitor that has a resolution of 2560x1600, or three 1080p monitors that have a resolution of 5760x1080? also, valve and blizzard would like to have a word with you.

I gave up on PC long time ago, it is simply not cost effective, unless your parents pick up the bill. I got a cheap DELL PC just for regular task like word processing and internet. gaming? leave it to the best guy, the PS3.

I'm more unhappy that Heavy Rain didn't make it to the PC than Alan Wake. At least games that Quantic Dream have coming down the pipe ARE going to be on the PC.

I play on pc and 360. I don't think I favor one over the other excessively. I do like aiming in a shooter with the mouse, but I am left handed so I usually have to reconfigure the keys. I am disappointed that the pc version was delayed or canceled because I like having the choice. I do understand why they did it however. Making the game work on one hardware configuration (360) instead of hundreds or thousands (all our various pcs) was much easier and faster. After 5 years of working on a single title I suppose I wouldn't mind a shortcut.

@spiderman: While I agree that PC games can be superior, to say that they are always superior is not only ignorant but childish. In fact, recently it's been the opposite. A lot of PC games are just buggy ports of console games. Don't be an idiot. You would love Alan Wake if you could play and I'm almost glad you won't. However I'm not glad for those PC guys that aren't elitist douches and I feel for them. This game looks great.

@Phazevariance Mass Effect 2 was a third person shooter/RPG. Was it only meant for the 360? No, the PC version when maxed is miles away than what your 360 can render and the HUD, though minimalist, does not have to suffer from slowly picking out your powers on a wheel. All we have to do is just press a number without even pausing. Any multiplatform game that has a PC version will always be superior on the PC. I also own a PS3 and the only game that even comes close is MGS4. So yea, take your Alan Wake, we sure as hell don't need it.

I'm bummed... :-( I was really looking forward to playing Alan Wake, but the Xbox360 is the only major platform that I don't own. I can't justify buying one just for a single title, so I guess this is just a game I'll never get to play.

Does anyone remember that Intel event where they showed how their quad-core processors allowed Alan Wake to be able to run physics in a separate thread of the rendering, AI and other processes? They showed a cool hurricane effect in the screen. Yeah, so much for touting Alan Wake as a game that would squeeze every bit of power you can give to it, Remedy. First Microsoft comes and tells us he is backing the PC as a gaming platform. They even released the latest iteration of the DirectX standard a few months ago (FFS, Alan Wake was going to be a DX10 title back in 2006!!), and then what? Out of a sudden they use their influence to make the game an X360 exclusive and give pathetic excuses to justify it... You say the game works better in a couch? Hook the PC on the TV if you don't have a big monitor You say the game works better with a gamepad? Hook your X360 controller or any other PC controller. Saying that you wanted to focus on a single version of the game is less insulting and more credible.

PC sucks, ever since consoles gained the focus of developers and the gaming industry. PC games still come out, but mainly because its easy to bring xbox 360 code over to a PC, and then the odd PC only title comes out. It just lacks the quantity of games available and number of new amazing titles that consoles have. Good for 360, i can't wait to try this game with a controller which is the best way to play 3rd person shooters.

Remedy is obviously showing signs of closure, the end of days, the evening sunset, the rope around the neck. I think this game won't be popular particularly among editorial rating staff. PC gamers are appalled by the fact that remedy has made this game look ugly and straightforward irrespective of which platform it is coming.

Take your Alan Wake, 360 gamers. What was supposed to showcase what the PC can do has now become just another run-of-the-mill console game. More linear story? All of their open world goals could've been realized had they stuck with making it for PC.

First Heavy Rain, then Alan Wake. Looks like a good game, doubt it will hit the 4 million mark though. Most Xbox fans are either into sport games or shooters and they dont venture out into new territory. Not saying everyone, just many people I know, who JUST play Halo, or COD, and thats it. But I fully support Alan Wake, I want this game to be successful because I want more games like this in the future. I love shooters, but I am so tired of them. Gaming can venture to new territory and be successful. It doesnt have to follow the typical "shooter formula" everyone goes for in their games. I mean, Look at Little Big Planet, 100% original and one of the best games of all time. I want to see more games like Alan Wake and Heavy Rain. Even though I doubt they will be profitable with such high development costs, and I just dont think theyll hit 4 million. I see this game topping off at about 1 or 2 million. Hopefully thats enough to make a good profit.

Before pc gamers toss their chips..lol think about it. MS wants it on the 360 first then later it will likely come out on PC. Maybe focusing on the console and have it release. rather then trying to do both.

I love Remedy with a passion as their Max Payne games were insanely great on the PC. I'm extremely disappointed that they signed up with Microsoft and are now starting to go console exclusive. You are severely limiting your audience by doing that and not to mention letting your fans down big time.
