Remedy on making Alan Wake

DICE 2010: Finnish studio's president Matias Myllyrinne discusses the "method behind our madness" during the psychological thriller's half-decade in development.

Has Remedy Entertainment really not shipped a game since October 2003? "Some of your parents may remember our last game, Max Payne 2," joked Matias Myllyrinne, president of the Finnish studio at his DICE Summit session this afternoon. However, with Alan Wake now set for a May 18 release, the designer took the stage to explain why it has taken so long to make the psychological horror game. "We'll discuss the method behind our madness," he declared.

First off, Myllyrinne said Alan Wake's long development cycle would not have been possible without the support of Microsoft. The company's backing is "letting us punch above our own weight," said an effusively thankful Myllyrinne. He did not mention that as part of that support, the PC version of the now Xbox 360-exclusive game was put on indefinite hold last year.

Alan Wake's character has evolved over five years into a more tired, paranoid figure.
Alan Wake's character has evolved over five years into a more tired, paranoid figure.

Remedy's principles are at the key of its development, and first among these is the core value of "focus." Myllyrinne said that this results in better games. He declared he'd rather ship a game that sells 4 million units every four years than release a game that sells 1 million units every year.

Another key principle is "people" at Remedy, which uses a smaller team than most AAA developers. They focus on multitalented people from all over the world: One Danish game designer has a background in drama, and a Brazilian level designer has a degree in psychology, which came in handy on Alan Wake.

To get the most out of his smaller staff, Myllyrinne encourages active--sometimes even heated--debate between coworkers because new ideas can arise from conflict. Remedy has also invested heavily in tools and technology, allowing for maximum worker productivity. As a result, Myllyrinne said only "three or four" members of the core Alan Wake team left during the game's development.

Finally, Remedy has a focus on branding and is very involved with the game's marketing. Myllyrinne said he wants every ad to make viewers feel like they're in a thriller.

Wheeling to Alan Wake in particular, Myllyrinne said that they set out to make a scary game and deliberately modeled the town of Bright Falls after TV's fictional hamlet of Twin Peaks. However, the game's three stages of development--preproduction, production, and the extensive postproduction Remedy is known for--ended up taking nearly twice as long as originally planned. Myllyrinne joked this was "taking the long road home."

That's not a hallucination--Alan Wake will finally ship to stores in May.
That's not a hallucination--Alan Wake will finally ship to stores in May.

Luckily, Remedy had enough Max Payne money and Microsoft support to bulk up to cope with the increased demands of current-generation console games. Although still small, the shop has increased payroll by 10-15 percent each year and uses outsourcing and freelancers extensively. As an example, two companies--one in Los Angeles and the other in Germany--are handling the game's sound design.

The character of Alan Wake has evolved as well, going from an outdoorsman of sorts to a tired, more paranoid figure. To make him as realistic as possible--something Myllyrinne feels is key in a thriller--they primarily used many concept photos instead of concept art for his character.

For Alan Wake's enemies, they wanted them to seem "just a bit off." To give the enemies a ghostly edge, they poured water on the concept drawings and let the ink run. This results in the shadowy, blurry figures that can be seen in the game's trailers.

Remedy also decided to reuse some elements from Max Payne 2 for what they call "near-miss moments." When an enemy attacks Alan Wake and nearly hits him, the action slows and then the camera angle changes. A brief demo showed the dramatic effect of these moments, especially when Max Payne pulls a flare out to vanquish a group of enemies in what Myllyrinne called "a Statue of Liberty moment."

Light will be a player's main weapon in Alan Wake, be it in the form of a flashlight or a blinding safety flare.
Light will be a player's main weapon in Alan Wake, be it in the form of a flashlight or a blinding safety flare.

All the aforementioned elements were shown together in a demo called the "Harvester of Sorrow," in which Alan Wake is attacked by a possessed grain combine that he must fend off with a flashlight. Once the shadowy driver takes enough damage, the machine disintegrates in a burst of shadow.

Myllyrinne said another big plus on Alan Wake development was the user testing assistance lent by Microsoft. So far, the game's controller scheme has been changed 18 times, and Myllyrinne thinks it will be 20 by the time it ships.

Remedy also gradually phased out the game's heads-up display for greater realism, including dumping a speedometer that appeared during driving sequences. "This isn't Need for Speed, so we didn't really need that."

Alan Wake's world is 10-by-10 kilometers of fully modeled terrain, based on over 60,000 photos taken in the Pacific Northwest. The Oregon town of Astoria was a particular inspiration, as was the state's Crater Lake National Park.

Unfortunately, Myllyrinne said the decision to make the game an open-world sandbox was a poor one and had to ultimately be scaled back. The advantage of a more linear story is that it allows for better pacing and emotional resonance. It also prevents jarring incongruity that could arise from random events. "When you have a guy show up to a love scene in a monster truck, you know something is wrong," Myllyrinne joked.

To help keep the game's development on track, Remedy would do intense work for five weeks and then every sixth week celebrate and focus on planning for the next phase. "You have to celebrate the small victories," said Myllyrinne in conclusion. When Alan Wake ships exactly three months from now, Remedy will be celebrating a big one.

Guys, stop with the conspiracy theories. There is no concerted effort to actually attack and kill PC gaming. Remedy was obviously forced into a difficult situation in making Alan Wake. Notice how the game took twice as long as Remedy planned, and how it switched from sandbox to linear. That is the surest sign of a game in big trouble. Without Microsoft's money propping them up, even with the success of Max Payne, I don't think a small studio can survive intense, modern development that takes twice as long as planned. Microsoft saved Remedy and allowed its employees to continue doing what they love. But of course, they probably had to cut back on some things to make sure they got the game done in a decade, and when you're working for MS, they'd rather you focus on the 360 to boost its sales. Remedy didn't intentionally screw PC gamers. They did what they had to do to keep their jobs and continue their artwork.

After supporting Remedy all the way, now they stick the screws to PC gamers. Well enjoy your new market cause i and many others will not be there for you anymore. And that crap that calls itself Max Payne 3 either.

4 million sales? They're delusional. Horror games rarely sell that well. No, RE4 and 5 weren't scary. They were action games.

Well that's fine, I mean I would have preferred to give them my money in exchange for a pc version but if they don't want it then I will be as happy to just keep my money. I mean I would have loved playing fable 2 or halo 3 on pc but not being able to wasn't a life shattering loss for me, if anyone is losing revenue it's them.

@mkeezay22 You've got the right idea - I also think that fans would go mad if they said we're taking another year and a half to develop the PC version, so they can release at the same time, and no one will be angry about it not coming to a dangerously vulnerable platform like the PC. Plus, I hope this serves as a message to all of you people who download illegally - you may not call yourself pirates, but it builds up - and results in stuff like this...hope it teaches you to keep your needy fingers to yourselves, and to respect that companies are making these games for YOU. So to download them egerly going on about how "i luves this gamesz" for no price, is basically condemning the sequels to either a spot on a console, or a perminant tomb. @masterchief80 Wow, you know gamers like you sound all innocent at first "I'm just a normal hater gamer", but this is psychotic! I mean Microsoft doesn't want as many games on the PC because of PIRACY. SEE ABOVE. And plus, multi-plat-form games never get the same polish as exlusive ones.

"Why the hell would MS pay a company to keep a game off of PC's, i.e. Games for Windows (Microsoft)? I'm pretty sure Remedy had reasons other than MS paying them off. Piracy for one." you just answered your own question,MS would want to keep it off the PC at least for now because of piracy. With a simultaneous release on PC and 360 they would lose 360 sales to PC piracy, people with both a 360 and PC would download the PC version and keep their 60$ That being said you would think MS would at least bring the game to GFWL at some point after the games 360 sales have slowed down but it looks like thats not gonna happen now either "ever stop to think that maybe, just maybe a small company like Remedy would rather devote their time and resources to a platform that they KNOW is going to be profitable just based on sheer installed base (360) compared to a platform that is waning in popularity and usually costs twice as much to get into (PC)?" no actually developing for PCs is less costly, first of all developers/publishers don't have to pay a fee to put a game on PC like they do with a console, secondly through things like digital distribution they save even more money by putting it on PC by cutting costs of making discs and inserts

Gee, whiz, i've NEVER heard of anything like this before!!!*looks over at his Playstation 1 copy of Silent Hill*...oh, yeah, nevermind. And there is NO, NO excuse for not releasing this on the PC, unless YOU WERE PAYED OFFFF!!You gotta be an IDIOT to not think that's the case.If not to never release it, then just to say nothing about it and release it at a later date, why?Because they DO want to kill PC gaming, they make a lot more software revenue for games on their goddamned console because of all the fees they charge.Like i said, you gotta be REALLY stupid to think there's any other logical reason, certainly not the BS they're trying to tell ya here.

When was it said the game would showcase DX10? 2006? "the game's three stages of development--pre-production, production, and the extensive post-production Remedy is known for--ended up taking nearly twice as long as originally planned". If the game was touted to showcase DX10 as one of it's strong points, given DX11 is already out now, perhaps they (or Microsoft) decided to use DX11 for the game, obviously delaying it. I think this makes sense, don't you?

"Stop the sh*t lies Remedy and just say you made it exclusive for the cash MS gave you not because it fits best on that platform" Why the hell would MS pay a company to keep a game off of PC's, i.e. Games for Windows (Microsoft)? I'm pretty sure Remedy had reasons other than MS paying them off. Piracy for one. Plus, did you ever stop to think that maybe, just maybe a small company like Remedy would rather devote their time and resources to a platform that they KNOW is going to be profitable just based on sheer installed base (360) compared to a platform that is waning in popularity and usually costs twice as much to get into (PC)?

mkeezay22, MS is publishing the game they don't need to throw cash at remedy to keep it on their platforms, if they want to release it on PC they will but for some reason they've decided not to. Its not Splinter Cell which MS have slipped a big fat check under the table for Ubisoft

@Duffleman We wouldn't need to do that if PC gaming wouldn't be declared dead every 5 minutes by some ignorant that thinks he knows what the hell he is talking about (not your case, you're not saying that). And not all PC gamers think the PC is necessarily superior to consoles, we just want to be treated with the same consideration console owners are. There are pros and cons with all platforms and i'm not getting into that again for the 184738147 time. ""As my PC playing girlfriend would say "why has the screen crashed?""" As my 360 owning friends would say : " why are those 3 red lights flashing?".

its one thing to make this game a 360 exclusive but its another to tell us its because 360 gamers have bigscreens and controllers well.... I have my PC hooked to my big screen and use a wired 360 controller for most 3rd person titles like this, and since when did every 360 come with a big screen.I know a few people with 360s who are still gaming on regular sized TVs and I'm sure when they go to buy this game they're not gonna say to themselves "hmmmm maybe I shouldn't get this its for 360 owners with big screens" Stop the sh*t lies Remedy and just say you made it exclusive for the cash MS gave you not because it fits best on that platform

Remedy seems to know what they're doing, though I don't know that it needed to take as long as it did. Still, The Max Payne games were so good that this is one of my biggest interests this year. I also have to watch Twin Peaks. It's been sitting on my damn bookshelf since Christmas.

@JayQproductions That's what console fanboys were saying 4-5 years ago when the current generation of consoles came out. Is PC gaming dead now?Not so much. How about looking at the top 5 Gamespot 360 games for last year, 4 of them are on the PC too and we're talking about GS here which is very console friendly. Oh,and learn how to speak proper english before posting , come on, "dieing"? @ratix2 Good point, especially Blizzard who makes only PC games. "He declared he'd rather ship a game which sells 4 million units every four years than release a game that sells 1 million units every year." Oh, in that case i would like to have played this game 3 year ago and wait for a new title to come out next year since u haven't released anything in 7 freakin' years. :|

Welcome back scary survival horror Genre! Alan Wake is going ot be huge for the 360 this year. Wont outsell Halo Reach but will push consoles and will continue a steady and dominant MS trend this year. From Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Alan Wake, Crackdown 2, Halo Reach, Fable 3 and possibly Gears of War 3....Toss in Project Natal and Microsoft has a lineup to keep people talking and interested all year long!

@disposition000 totally right man. the PC is being dissed even though everything that we have now like the consoles and handhelds etc. all came from the mother of all tech., THE PC. and they really should utilize directx 11 and start making some games for the PC cuz they really shouldn't forget about it and let it die. and they really should make alan wake for the PC. it would go awesome with it, heck every game can go with a PC! i know there have to be some exclusives but come on, no exclusives for the PC? and not to mention all the other games that came out for the consoles but not the PC? and all the 'games' that are comin out fo the PC are lame stupid games made by some small time video game developers who work on them in their basements and have a part time job in a fast food joint. sorry for the outburst but im really concerned the future of PC's.

@ Virtual_nathan Neither of those games created a genre. It's just that console users don't normally see titles like these, they're usually PC games. @Skargamer You're right. Heavy Rain should come out for PC AND utilize DirectX 11, but don't hold your breath. Alan Wake should too. It's f*cking bullsh*t that they canceled it to "focus on the Xbox version." PC gets sh*t on again even though any of these games would look and run so much better on a nice PC.

Sounds like this game is gonna be a load of crap. They spent too long making it. The gameplay looks like it's from a 360 launch title. Such a shame that such a long development time is going to be greeted by average review scores and sales.
