Redbox Ending Game Rentals; Purchases Going Away Soon

Physical game rentals continue their slow decline.

The kiosk rental service Redbox is no longer renting video games, and will cease sales of used games at the end of the year. The company announced that it is "permanently transitioning out of the games business" and will now exclusively rent movies.

The company confirmed the move on Twitter after Reddit users noticed their local kiosks were no longer offering game rentals. In a statement to The Verge, the company said you'll be able to buy games through the kiosks through the end of the year. That effectively ends physical game rentals for many users, since other businesses like Blockbuster have largely closed their doors.

Like Redbox's movie service, it rented games for a daily rate and allowed users to keep games for as long as they wanted. This meant that if you could speed through quickly enough, it was an inexpensive way to try a lot of games.

Purchases through physical kiosk locations is only available through the end of the year, but online purchases appear to be available through early 2020. That likely means however long into the new year it takes for the company to clear out the stock sold through its site, which is currently offering a holiday sale.

That sucks. I used RB on several occasions to try out games I was on the fence about.

This is disappointing I would use Redbox to rent the games I knew were bad but was still interested enough to play them just to see how bad or to rent the games I was unsure of. For instance Death Stranding is definitely a Redbox rent kind of game I mean I know it's nothing but a walking simulator but I feel like I still need to experience it for myself just to see how bad it truly is. Also WWE 2K20 it's a glitched broken mess but Redbox would be the perfect place to try it out and see just how broken it is without wasting real money on it buying it. I remember it was thanx to Redbox I found Farcry 3 and 4 I rented both from Redbox and ended up enjoying them immensely and bought them. It was also thanx to Redbox that I found I didn't like the Last of Us despite everyone's heavy praise for the Game. I was able to rent and beat the game and found its gameplay to be lackluster and its story clichéd but either way I got to experience it for much less then buying it outright. Game rentals at Redbox will be sorely missed altho this does open up a unique market opportunity for someone with right business acumen to seize the opportunity. I think if Sony Microsoft and even Google can get their individual streaming services up to snuff then cheap Hassel free game rentals could be a real avenue for them. Hopefully they are thinking of implementing this feature.
