THQ gives us a brief update on the status of its upcoming sci-fi shooter.

We spoke briefly with THQ today to get a progress report on its upcoming sci-fi shooter, Red Faction. According to a company representative, the game is in the final stages of development. Currently, the development team at Volition is fine-tuning the multiplayer mode, and they expect the game to meet its scheduled ship date of September 18.

Red Faction is set on a remote mining colony in a sci-fi universe. Players assume the role of Parker, a miner who fights to escape the colony and find a cure for the mysterious plague afflicting his fellow miners. The innovative game engine supports full terrain deformation, which lets players blast through rocks, walls, ceilings, and floors if they choose. The game was previously released on the Sony PlayStation 2 in May, and the upcoming PC version of the game features several improvements, including optimized graphics and a more complete multiplayer mode.

Red Faction is nearing completion at Volition, the company that created the FreeSpace games, and it is scheduled for release in late September.
