Red Dead Redemption 2 Will Sell at Least 15 Million Copies, Analyst Says

That number may even be conservative, Cowen & Company says.

Earlier today, Rockstar Games officially confirmed that Red Dead Redemption 2 is in the works and will launch in fall 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Now, research firm Cowen & Company has released a statement in which it says the western stands to sell at least 15 million copies. In fact, 15 million in sales might be "conservative," the firm said in a release today. That's in part because the first Red Dead Redemption was received very well by critics and fans alike, with the game's reputation "grow[ing] in stature over the years."

Red Dead Redemption sold 13 million copies, though that figure is only accurate as of February 2012.

Additionally, Cowen & Company's release pointed out that Rockstar's latest marquee game, 2013's Grand Theft Auto V, has shipped 65 million units, which it claims is evidence of the "increased concentration of unit sales in top titles since Red Dead Redemption's release in 2010."

Like GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 may bring in more money beyond initial unit sales through its "brand-new online multiplayer experience." It remains to be seen how this will work for Red Dead Redemption 2, but GTA V lets people spend real money to acquire in-game money--and it's been big business.

The Cowen & Company report also mentioned that Rockstar "does have a history of title delays." Interestingly, the firm believes Red Dead Redemption 2 might have already been delayed, even if this was not communicated outside of the company. Rockstar possibly wanted to ship the game in Take-Two's April-June 2017 quarter before deciding on the fall 2017 window, Cowen & Company said.

Red Dead Redemption was delayed multiple times before its release in May 2010.

We don't know much about Red Dead Redemption 2 at this point. A teaser shows seven different characters, but there is no word on if it will be a prequel or a sequel to Red Dead Redemption, which itself was a follow-up to Red Dead Revolver. We will likely learn more on Thursday, October 20, when Rockstar releases a trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2.

I noticed alot of you seem to belive that Marston & co will return in this. I would like to remind you that Revolver and Redemption 1 is only related in name only, there is no story relation. And as far as i remember, none of the GTA's continues any of the previous games stories.

Im going to assume RDR2 takes place in a new continuity with brand new characters.

@Pupchu: Redemption 2 is titled to suggest that this is a direct sequel, and thus will retain at least a subset of the characters and setting from Redemption 1. That was not the case when Rockstar went from Revolver to Redemption. No one outside of Rockstar knows anything yet, so speculation is only being done in good fun at the moment anyway.

@Pupchu: Revolver has nothing to do with Rockstar. Anyway there is a continuation here, it is called Red Dead Redemption again...and the guy on the left looks hella like Marston.

That's really f*cking conservative if you ask me, I'd go with twice that. It will be spurred on by Red Dead Redemption's reputation and GTAVs success. I mean by then your talking what? 50million PS4s and 30million XB1s...maybe even the Nintendo NX, throw in a PC release(more likely this time with consoles being similar to PCs)and you have a large market.

Be the third Western I'll have played: Gun, Red Dead Redemption 1 and now 2. Never played Red Dead Revolver or the Call of Juarez series...might give them a go over the next year to get into the mood...and of course replay 1.

Another Rockstar game with no female characters that aren't whores or strippers. Oh well.

@jurk182: You mean digital representations of women who don't actually exist? No big deal. There are lots of strong and important women out here in the real world to fawn over if that's your thing.

@jurk182: It's the wild west. What do you want one that cleans and cooks?

Mixing up current times with the time period in the game. Lots of folks doing that these days, trying to put current time / events in with history and wanting changes.

Guess they could always do the wierd west and really mix it up, now that would be cool.

@jurk182: Ummm, errr, what? I know the last Red Dead was a while ago and you may not have actually, like, played it, but that isn't my recollection of Bonnie MacFarlane or Abigail Marston.

John Marston on the far left. Bill Williamson, 3rd from the right. Is that Dutch in the middle?! Obvi, Dutch's gang.

I'm wondering what could be the story of this game. In the previous game they say "1910 the wild west is dying" so this game will be a prequel of that? or we are going to play in 1920 with a stupid story out of date?

@KiriharaZro: Prequal, it looks like Marstons old gang so I'd say like 1890-1910.

I hope that its MP has seperate trophies from the main game or non at all, I would prefer trophies that give me a extra to go somewhere off the main path and give me more playing time and extra stuff, I would love to play this game if it had that set-up

@Daelusca: GTA is a casual game. The name alone sells millions, they didn't have to do jack shit to get the casuals. Red Dead is not.

@twilightangel: That is alarmingly obtuse. GTA morphed into a game for casuals...the concept of taking on the character of a homicidal maniac is not one that would speak to most gamers, let alone casuals. It is the open world that allows you to do a variety of very little that sucks in the casuals. The popularity of RDR with actual gamers has made this title very valuable, which will bring in the casuals, if they do the mp/ open world like GTA, 15 mil will be a slamdunk.
