Now Playing: Red Dead Redemption 2 Size Confirmed And 'Mandatory' 100-Hour Week Addressed - GS News Update

With its sprawling setting and sheer range of activities to partake in, Rockstar's open-world western, Red Dead Redemption 2, is a huge game on PS4 and Xbox One, and you'll need to have quite a bit of space on your console to install it. The developer has opened a support page for the title on its website, confirming its file size on PS4 and Xbox One--and it's even bigger than previously estimated.

According to the support page, Red Dead Redemption 2 weighs in at 99 GB on PS4. You'll need to have even more room if you're going digital, as the installation process will require an additional 50 GB on top of that. Xbox One owners, meanwhile, will need to have 107 GB to install the game.

There has been much speculation over how big Red Dead Redemption 2's size is, although all previous estimates have indicated that it was going to be quite hefty. The box for the Red Dead Redemption 2 PS4 Pro bundle suggested it was going to be 105 GB, while the Microsoft Store listed it as approximately 88 GB.

If you're purchasing Red Dead Redemption 2 digitally, you'll be able to pre-load it starting October 18, at 9 PM PT (12 AM ET on Friday). You'll get other benefits for pre-ordering the game, such as the Ardennes War Horse, Outlaw Survival Kit, extra cash in Red Dead Redemption 2's story mode, and bonus GTA$ for Grand Theft Auto V's GTA Online mode. You can read more in our Red Dead Redemption 2 pre-order guide.

Red Dead Redemption 2 releases for PS4 and Xbox One on October 26. Rockstar has recently shared the game's launch trailer, which you can watch here. GameSpot awarded the game a 9/10 in our Red Dead 2 review. Critic Kallie Plagge wrote, "Red Dead Redemption 2 is an excellent prequel, but it's also an emotional, thought-provoking story in its own right, and it's a world that is hard to leave when it's done."

My RDR2 disc version and 4TB WD Passport external drive should be delivered by UPS any minute now. Then of course I have to wait 1.5 hours to perform the install.

OMG hurry up UPS!

Avatar image for blkmac

@danjammer69: def only took me only 45mins to install

Avatar image for soliaired50

It's also taking up a ton of space here on Gamespot lol. 16 out of the 21 articles just on the front page are all about RDR2.

looks like it may be time for Holographic Versital Digital Disc the successor to Blu ray Disc. These disc could hold 4x the amount of a standard Blu ray. Currently data caps will cripple game developer ambitions with ever larger game worlds. Red Dead Redemption 2 comes on 2 Blu ray discs. Or a colossal 149 GBs on PlayStation 4. actually more space is needed. I have tried installing a 38 GB game. When I have 39 GB remaining on the HDD. Only for the message to say. Not enough room on the HDD need to clear some space.

Hopefully Read Dead Redemption 2 will be worth all the trouble. Hopefully PlayStation 5 will take ever increasing game size into account.

Still smaller than FFXV.

Do you think that Shenmue 3 will beat this game in size ? I remember hearing somewhere that Shenmue 3 on PC has bigger size than 100 GB .

Folks, this is a perfect day for buying a nice fast USB3 SSD, or even a powered HDD (don't even bother with the cheaper USB-powered HDDs).

Your local MicroCenter, Fry's, or even Best Buy can point you in the right direction. I've had great performance from my Seagate SSD and my WD 4TB HDD (again, the powered-by-wall-brick version, not in-line power). Skip the Toshibas, IMO. Last one was slower than the internal HDD.

Remember when I tought Rage was huge? @.@

Avatar image for jaswri

Couldn't care less how big it is. It's getting dled tomorrow. Can't wait for it too. Been shafted by FH4 so this will take some of the disappointment away. Soul Calibur 6 also.

Avatar image for sagittarius476

@jaswri: dude -.- just but an ext hard drive, I got 8tb drive lol works fantastic!

Deleted some old games i don't play anymore...I got 150gb on my Xbox One...Let's do this...

Avatar image for djape_boss

why does gamespot keep relisting and relisting same articles? wtfff

Avatar image for sdzald

Click bait of course. RD2 is very popular, the more clicks GS gets the more money they make off of their adds. I would stop coming here only every gaming site does it so what you going to do?

Avatar image for djape_boss

@sdzald: that bloody sucks

Avatar image for gzaface

My HD is ready i have 167gb free. Physical on ps4 all the way.

Avatar image for santinegrete

@gzaface: since mandatory installation, isn't installation size as big as digital download? At least from what I saw in my Xbox One.

Avatar image for blibdoolpoolp

Why is Xbox file size so much smaller?

Avatar image for jose_consuela

@blibdoolpoolp: it’s running in 720p.

Avatar image for blkmac

@jose_consuela: false! It runs @ 864p. 🤣

Avatar image for champioza

@jose_consuela: Give them some credit, 900p.

Avatar image for sephirothswing

@jose_consuela: if you have one eye yeah. 😂😂

Avatar image for sdzald

You got that backwards, PS4 is 90 GB Xbox is 107 GB. No idea why the Xbox code is nearly 20 GB larger but I guess it could have something to do with 4K support.

Avatar image for jose_consuela

@sdzald: but you’ll need an extra 50gb for the digital version on PS4 for some God awful reason.

Avatar image for ssdd_again

@jose_consuela: The extra 50 is just for the installation process . . . looks like the PS4 heavily falls back on hard drive space to deal with operations when it runs out of ability elsewhere.

Where as the Xbox One does not, perhaps.

Also, PS4 is 99gb not 90gb.

Avatar image for santinegrete

@ssdd_again: you mean those extra 50 will be free after the installation right?

Avatar image for hyruler461

@santinegrete: Yes. They download the game to the HDD and then install some of it at the same time. When done installing they delete the temp files needed to install.

Avatar image for jose_consuela

@ssdd_again: that’s so crappy. 50gb is the size of another standard game. Luckily external hard drives are cheap.

Avatar image for dragonsama

So what happens if you don't have your console on-line? Will you even be able to play it at all? I don't think Blu Rays hold more than 40-50 GB?

Avatar image for sdzald

With Xbox, if you load the game from media then you have to have the 'first' CD in the drive when you launch the game. I would say I run about half in half with my games. Digital downloads are convenient but I am old school and still like having the game in my hands.

Avatar image for santinegrete

@sdzald: oh man I hope you can rely on that the day this consoles don't have servers on them anymore. Honestly worried about that.

Avatar image for asnakeneverdies

@sdzald: I don't think that's what she asked.

Avatar image for gamer20482

Happy I dont have a bandwidth cap games are getting bigger in size

Avatar image for sdzald

Holy freaking cow, I can see why Sony and MS are saying they will allow downloads of it to start on the 19th for pre orders. Even with hefty bandwidth its going to take hours to download.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@sdzald: this is why there will always be a need for physical media -- even with a large day one patch, the bulk of the data will be on disc and save the bandwidth.

Avatar image for Vodoo

@Xristophoros: While I prefer physical copies, the digital installs much faster for me. I get 200Mbps at my consoles and it's faster than the console reading the disc and installing it. Though the PS4 installs much slower than the XB1X.

Avatar image for blkmac

@Vodoo: PS4 Pro installs worlds faster than the XB1X if u swap out the HDD and put in an SSD. The XB1X HDD is slow as ****.

Avatar image for Vodoo

@blkmac: I use a 7200 rpm 4TB external on my X (don't even use the internal drive) and 7200 rpm 2TB internal on my PS4. I don't have the Pro and I'm definitely not putting an ssd in a regular PS4 because the cpu causes a bottleneck so you don't even notice a speed difference really. I don't notice any difference in loading speeds between the PS4's original 5400 rpm and the upgraded 7200 rpm.

Not sure if the Pro has a bottleneck issue, but probably not as bad as the original PS4 if it does.

Avatar image for blkmac

@Vodoo: yea it would be pointless on a regular PS4. The Pro supports SSDs but the base model doesnt. U can still use an SSD in the base model but u wont get any speed benefits

Avatar image for Vodoo

@blkmac: Does the Pro still use up to a 2TB internal drive? Because I already had to start deleting games off my PS4 because the 2 TB's was almost gone.

And external SSD's are ridiculously expensive for minimal space.

Avatar image for blkmac

@Vodoo: supports 4TB internally. And u can add another 4TB externally too. I got a 4TB external drive for abt $120

Avatar image for couly

@Xristophoros: I get my PC games on disc from Germany! can't get them on my 'local' amazon or store.

Avatar image for santinegrete

@couly: those are tied to DRM or can be played without internet as an option?

Avatar image for couly

@santinegrete: without internet

Avatar image for Tidus1012

@Xristophoros: Physical FTW

Avatar image for se7enxx89xx

@Tidus1012: If you buy it physical how long will it take to install it?
