Now Playing: GS News Update: Red Dead Redemption 2 Gets Early Content on PS4

Red Dead Redemption 2 players on PlayStation 4 will get "first access to to earn select online content," Sony has announced. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, the platform holder said the deal was part of a partnership with developer Rockstar Games.

"Following up Grand Theft Auto V--one of the most successful entertainment properties of all time--Rockstar is set to return with Red Dead Redemption 2, the latest entry in the Red Dead series of games. And there’s no better place to play it than PlayStation," reads the post.

Sony's vice president of PlayStation Brand Marketing, John Koller, said Red Dead Redemption 2 is "handcrafted to take full advantage of the PS4" and promised "more details soon" on the exclusive access PS4 players will have in the game.

The announcement coincides with the release of the first Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer. While the video doesn't provide any story details, or answer that burning question of whether it's a prequel starring John Marston, it did showcase the impressive game world.

There also seemed to be a hint at a connection to the first game, which came in the form of a narrator that sounds a lot like Dutch van der Linde, the character Marston is pursuing in Redemption.

Rockstar has promised a "brand-new multiplayer experience" for Red Dead Redemption 2. It remains to be seen what the online mode will entail, however. Red Dead Redemption featured online multiplayer gameplay, but it was a separate instanced mode where a limited number of people could play together. Since then Rockstar has seen success with Grand Theft Online, which is much larger in scope and content.

Bitch to the devs about exclusive content. Shit was always as dumb just like when pre order shit (excluding collecter edition stuff) and especially when multiple retailers have their own exclusive pre order content for the same game.

Since there won't be a huge number of people around, or buildings/objects in general, I hope they really push the AI and interactivity to new levels.

Rockstar would be more than happy to partner with sony again. GTA has always sold more on playstation, heck the ps4 version is currently one of few eight gen games that had sales well over 10 million, and other games with 10 million copies sold all are on ps4. Crazy not to make a deal on those attach rate!

Woobty Fideley Doo, early access to DLC, Greatness Awaits!

Sony is turning to MS of last gen. except MS have a functioning online network.

I understand that single player will be the main reason I get this game but i'm just worried that the online portion of the game will just be the same as GTA: Online. Grindy as hell and built around buying in-game money with real money. If it is, I'll stay far away.

It would be suicide to go with XB1, seeing as how it has around half the install base of PS4. With that PS4 install base being well over 40 million units, like I said...

Avatar image for idkhow2play

@zeeroah: Wait do you actually believe it will sell to ALL 40 million PS4 owners?

@gruntreaper: Lmao i know right!

Oh but he littered install base in there multiple times and even 20% of 40 mil is more than 20% of 20 mil...

@gruntreaper:
First, I am not acting, I am typing. And second of all, go learn the basics of 'selling to' a technology install base(user-base), and then go away.

@zeeroah: They shouldnt go with either,its a multiplattform game

@sladakrobot: Exactly especially Rockstar when know they are going to sell a lot of copies any way, but I'm sure Sony had the money bags out or are they helping to develop the game or is it a strong a relationship with the devs.

@sladakrobot:
Oh, in that beautiful world of tomorrow, where capitalism doesn't exist, and we can all just run along doing whatever we want, without having to worry about dominating a market(or earning our keep), just to stay in business for the next haul.
If there is any company I think deserves to do whatever the hell they like, it is R*.
It is the reason I use Multi-plats on PS4 vs xb1. The user-base just makes all the multiplayer stuff a lot easier. Plus there are always WAY more used copies of the games on Ebay(which drives the price down).

Avatar image for Salt_The_Fries

@zeeroah: So the more than primitive online infrastructure that's just barely functional and inferior triggers are objective measures why you go with PS4 for multiplats? Oh and the attach rate for X1 exclusive games (and especially Wii U) is much higher than on PS4 and I have scientific data to prove it.

I knew it. Rockstar gained so much money from GTAV online's micro-transactions that single-player will be an afterthought again...just like PC gamers.

Avatar image for soarlozer

@cboye18: Thats pretty delusional thinking GTA V single player was a afterthought unless you are being a cry baby about single player dlc.

Avatar image for cboye18
cboye18

@soarlozer: Guess you didn't play the previous GTA's thoroughly then. The side activities, weapon variety and the amount of cheats all paled compared to San Andreas or Vice City. Multiplayer cash-in was obviously their priority this time around.

All we got was a GTAIV with a larger open world, yet even the story and replayability sucked in comparison. At least in that game you could create chaos without dying every minute.

@cboye18: Thank you! With all the money they made just from the GTA V launch, they couldnt use that money to port the game to PC, thats ridiculous

Son of a bitch, Sony. Leave our beloved 3rd party games the F alone! Nobody buys a F'ng console to get dlc early. Well, I guess some chumps do but, I'd like to think they are in the minority.

Avatar image for louixiii

@bdrtfm: Money talks. See...Microsoft has more money...but Sony is willing to spend the bread. If MS wasn't such penny pinchers maybe they'd get more exclusive content too.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@bdrtfm: go complain at rockstar. they agreed to this too you know. if they had an ounce of respect for their fans, they would have told sony to back off. instead, rockstar let the dollar signs get to their head. how do you think sony fans felt when microsoft bribed s-e with tomb raider? just be thankful sony is not getting rdr2 exclusivity for one calendar year.

Avatar image for bdrtfm
BDRTFM

@Xristophoros: In a word, No. I was just as pissed when Microsoft got TR for a year. 3rd party games should be left the F alone. Microsoft actually said they wouldn't be doing this kind of shit anymore. But Sony is paying for early or exclusive dlc in every game they can convince the publishers to pimp out to them. And they said they will continue to seek such deals in the future. There is a big difference between paying for and helping publish an entire game and paying publishers to hack games into pieces to make your player base feel like a special snowflake. I own a PS4. This kind of shit doesn't make me feel special. It just makes me feel bad for my friends who don't have a PS4.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@bdrtfm: it takes TWO (no pun intended) parties to agree to something. basically you are saying sony was able to take control of rockstar and tell them what to do lol sony is the villain here i suppose lol... give it a rest. like it said, rockstar is just as much to blame for this as any other developer/publisher when it comes to exclusivity of content. if sony did not get the deal, microsoft would. we don't know how it works, but chances are it has to do with the number of ps4 units sold versus the x1, as well as monetary incentives over and above. i couldn't care less about online content either, but just making a point. i know you choose to ignore common sense if it doesn't suit your argument, but there it is. now, carry on hating on sony. you are good at that.

Avatar image for bdrtfm
BDRTFM

@Xristophoros: The argument that Rockstar is just as much to blame is not much of an argument at all. That would depend on who approached who first of all. If Sony rolled a truckload of cash to Rockstar HQ for the dlc, then they'd have to be stupid to say no. But given the fact that Sony stated they don't see a problem with doing these kinds of deals and said they would actively seek these kinds of deals in the future, that makes Sony the main instigator and the Publishers just taking free money for something they already produced. And no, it wasn't a case of if Sony didn't take the deal Microsoft would. Microsoft, again, said they will no longer do these kind of deals in the future. So it was a case of if Sony didn't take the deal, there would be no deal to take. I think the only type of dealing we'll see from Microsoft is with EA and that is because EA continues to approach MS with minor things like a few days early access due to Sony's refusal to have EA Access on PlayStation. So I think EA has a bit of a grudge with Sony because of that.

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58

@gruntreaper: LOL, except SONY did WORSE than that a little less that 20 years ago with the same franchise, to keep it off Sega consoles completely for a few years. Then there is Street Fighter V as a recent example of their shenanigans.

Avatar image for Larsa_Ferrinas

@dlCHIEF58: Microsoft did much worse by delaying the entire game of Star ocean, Tales of Vesperia and GTA 4 dlc, for 2 years, last gen.

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@Larsa_Ferrinas: ????WHAT? Every game mentioned was a 3rd party game which Microsoft had no part in any delays. Furthermore, you don't know what the heck you are talking about with GTA IV as you have it completely backward. There was no planned DLC for GTA IV until Microsoft gave Rockstar $50 million to make it which took time and naturally had some sort of exclusivity period since they footed the bill on it. Without Microsoft that DLC would never had existed in the first place.

@dlCHIEF58:It was proven several times that microsoft paid for GTA 4. http://www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-paid-75-million-to-stop-gtaiv-ps3-exclusivity/1100-6262370/. Plus Microsoft bought Star Ocean and Tales of Vesperia exclusivity in US and UK.
