Now Playing: Red Dead Redemption 2 PC Specs & New Content Revealed - GS News Update

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Rockstar Games has shown off Red Dead Redemption 2's PC version for the first time. The recent announcement promised that the game would include graphical improvements, but Rockstar didn't share any screenshots or videos. Coinciding with the game opening for pre-orders, Rockstar has now published the first screenshots of the PC edition--and Arthur Morgan is looking goooooood.

The screenshots show off similar sights from the console version, but looking even more impressive. They show off the wide range of environments that you'll encounter throughout the game, as well as the improved lighting effects. Click each image below to bring up a full-size, high-resolution display.

Here's how Rockstar outlines the improvements:

  • New graphical and technical enhancements for deeper immersion include increased draw distances for better navigation
  • Higher quality global illumination and ambient occlusion for improved day and night lighting
  • Higher quality snow trails
  • Improved reflections and deeper
  • Higher resolution shadows at all distances
  • Tessellated tree textures and improved grass and fur textures for added realism in every plant and animal

Beyond all of this Red Dead Redemption 2's PC version includes support for 4K (and beyond), HDR, and multi-monitor setups. Of course, you'll need the necessary hardware to play the game, as outlined in the just-revealed Red Dead 2 PC system specs.

Red Dead Redemption 2 launches on November 5 for PC through the Rockstar Games Launcher and other stores. The game won't come to Steam until December, however.

Red Dead Redemption 2's PC version also includes a variety of extras for the story mode, including new missions, weapons, horses, gang hideouts, and more. Check out GameSpot's rundown to see all the new content coming to the PC version.

Wow, nice graphical upgrade!

Really hope they've fixed the bulk of the bugs though, (certain mechanics are still hosed on consoles).

enjoy that game guys. there's over 100 missions and every single one is like, the best western you've ever seen. go for those gold medals, master those levels best gaming experience i had since, witcher 3.

just the first three levels alone, my god. just remember when/if you're going for collectibles, or hunting requests, they are drip fed with no warning, and more unlock as you progress chapters, the game hasn't glitched, it just doesn't explain itself, and the rng is wild.

@dynamotnt: Thanks for this, now I'm even more hyped, already preordered on Rockstar and got my two free games to keep me busy until release. I'm going to lose myself in this world and explore everything 100%. Good to see some positivity from an actual gamer and not the "hurr durr I didn't enjoy it so it's actually boring".

@mdinger:

I wouldn't worry about it. Tried to play it on my PS3 before the RDR2 release and couldn't. It's very long and outdated, I didn't have the patience.

@mdinger: Won't be happening unfortunately. I plan to play both games back to back though, RDR 2 on PC and RDR 1 the sequel in 4K on my Xbox One X.

Hmmm. Having a PS4 Pro is cheaper than needing 2 RTX 2080s so say "seeeeeee pc master race"

@balugha: No offense, but I'd stick with what you'd know. It really isn't that expensive as well as having a longer lifespan. The expensive bit is when you start going for 4k monitors or VR (Which depends what you play still. Most VR games aren't too performance hungry unless you are playing flight sims).

Anyway, as an Xbox One and PC owner I'll stick with my PC for my primary gaming purposes (Only bought the Xbox for RDR2 actually. Will be happy to re-play it again on PC). Consoles are great, though to me it's one of those things where once you try it, it is hard to go back.

@Smosh150:

PC is definitely more expensive and has a shorter lifespan. Got my PS4 in 2013 for $400 and it still plays the newest games 6 year later. A $400 PC will have a hard time playing the current games, let alone the games that will come out 6 years later.

@balugha: You have to take into acount that once you buy one of thease cards at a price more expensive than a ps4 pro it would mean better graphics at a higher frame for almost every single game and maintain a better than ps4 pro quality for around 5 years.

@balugha: I've only got one GTX 1080 from 3 years ago that cost me twice as much as my PS4, still see a couple more years out of it. The cost is worth it IMO but I've never claimed to be part of some fictional master race. Console has some advantages over PC, frame rate obviously not being one of them. The PC elitists are no masters, they let Steam control them and cry when they have to switch free launchers, that's petty not masterful.

@bluzima: I got an Nvidia 1080 last year and cost me just a little less than my discounted Xbox One X that included an extra controller. My PC with the Nvidia 1080 is still slightly better and will surpass RDR 2's recommended requirements, but I think my Xbox One X bundle was the better bargain considering it includes a 4K HDR bluray player and 2 Xbox One S gamepads.

@proceeder: It could be the TV as well. Not all 4K HDR TVs are the same. Some have better Dolby Vision HDR viewing experience than others.

Wait a minute!

They haven't said if the characters' progress from consoles could be imported, have they?

They're also selling ultimate versions...does this mean it won't?!

I don't have the highest of high end PCs - the idea of spending over a grand on a video card is just asinine to me - but if I can get a solid 60FPS at 1080p on High (or whatever the tier below max will be) settings with a few tweaks, I'll be happy, since I'm not likely to get the same at 1440p - unless I treat myself to a 5700 XT for Christmas. Assuming I can find one. And assuming AMD manages to fix the drivers by then.

@thedarklinglord: I have a GeForce GTX 1080, M.2 1T SSD, 32GB RAM and a Intel Core i7-8700K . That should be good enough for nice performance. I'll be definitely upgrading next year my GPU and CPU. Hopefully a i9 CPU and a GeForce RTX 2080. Maybe next year when prices hopefully go down a little more.

@angrycreep: I should get a decent enough performance at 1080p with my RX 580 - provided RDR2 isn't optimized like a Ubisoft game, which is to say not optimized at all - but I'd really love to play it at 1440p with max settings. If the RTX 2070 Super was $75 to $100 cheaper, I'd probably go that route over the 5700 XT - purely for the sake of convenience, though, as, all things being equal, I'd still prefer to support AMD.

@warmblur: Can your 970 get ray tracing support? It doesn't have the dedicated chip(found on RTX gpus) for that just like my 1080.

@firedrakez : My 970 gtx doesn't have ray tracing support I'm just surprised RDR2 doesn't have RT. It's not like it matters for me now but when I upgrade my video card in the future it will.

@bluzima: If you love the wild west you will like it at least for a while but it is very samey just in nature. It will be better on PC due to response times though as that did drag the consoles down a bit as reactions to anything you did in game had a slight delay.

@deviltaz35: The Xbox One X has Auto Low Latency Mode(Game mode) to reduce input lag. You need a TV that can support that feature though.
