Red Dead Redemption 2 Has These Special And Collector's Editions

Rockstar's new PS4 and Xbox One open-world game will come in more than one form.

Red Dead Redemption 2's special editions were teased last month, but we've finally been given a peek at what these special editions have to offer. Note "special editions." There's not one, but three different versions to choose from.

The first of the three is the Special Edition ($80 in the US), which includes several story mode additions and a physical world map. It includes a bank robbery mission and a gang hideout in story mode; a dappled black thoroughbred horse; talisman and medallion accessories to enhance Arthur's skills in-game; gameplay boosts, cash bonuses, and discounts; the Nuevo Paraiso Gunslinger outfit; and free access to several weapons: the volcanic pistol, pump action shotgun, and Lancaster varmint rifle.

The Ultimate Edition ($100) includes all of the content from the Special Edition and more. This version tacks on two bonus outfits, the Blackrose Bounty Hunter and Copperhead Enforcer outfits; a black chestnut thoroughbred horse with a high plains cutting saddle; free access to the survivor camp theme; and rank bonuses in online play.

The Collector's Box ($100) however does not have any digital content, or the game. Instead, it focuses on physical items from the Red Dead universe. Everything included will come in a metal tithing box with a lock and key. It includes a collectible challenger coin; double-sided 100-piece puzzle; Six Shooter bandana; treasure map; pin set; playing cards featuring illustrated versions of Arthur Morgan, John Marston, Javier Escuella, Bill Williamson, and Dutch van der Linde; a replica of the 150-page Wheeler, Rawson and Co. Catalogue; and 12 collectible cigarette cards inspired by the ones that can be found in-game.

Both the Special and Ultimate Editions are up for pre-order digitally on the Xbox Store and Playstation Network. Check out the pre-order bonuses here. All three versions, including the Collector's Box, are available to pre-order on the Rockstar Warehouse. Red Dead Redemption 2 is out on Xbox One and PS4 October 26.

Awful, this whole setup is absolutely god awful. A hundred fucking dollar price tag for a bunch of digital extras that will in no way be anything special, in particular. You are officially an unthinking tool if you go for any of this. I'm sure there are plenty of you out there, of course.

I hope to see more companies do this. IDGAF about the DLC pre-order stuff. I can just buy that later on.
An edition devoted solely to PHYSICAL bonuses though?

That's exactly what I want to see more of.
Especially if it's not 150$ when all you want is an art-book and a map, but they feel you also need a giant dragon statue (skyrim)

Money is making Rockstar evil. CD Projekt Red is the last hope for all gamers looking for a great single player experience. Come on Cyberpunk 2077!!

I'm not sure if i'm more depressed by the terrible business practices of the gaming industry or the fact that there are millions of people who are going to see this and willingly support the more expensive box set and incentivise this sort of thing to keep happening.

@Cassius103: Its honestly depressing. Whales always make excuses for multi BILLION dollar businesses as if they need defending. No, the consumer is the one who needs defending. This coming from me, a HUGE fan of RDR, its my fav game of all time, but even I don't make excuses for messes like this.

The treasure map looks sweet. Having the physical dimensions detailed within this promotional material would've been useful for those of us inclined to frame these facsimiles for wallsetting purposes. "You can't have too many maps. Nuh uh!" That's what I say. ?️

If it is either unfolded paper or a cloth map I would agree. If it is a cheap folded paper map I will pass for sure.

Well, that’s insane. Season passes are bad enough, but this is just a few extras for another $20-$40. I bet they’ll add even more stuff to nickel and dime people with later.

Screw preordering. I have enough backlog that I can wait til this game goes on sale every month like gta v

Well that's about right. Nickel and diming us for everything we got. What ever happened to getting a full game for 60 bucks? Now its all spread out over pre-order bonuses and special editions trying to make it sound like if you spend a little extra money, you get this content for free, which should've been on the fucking standard version already. I'm so sick of this gaming generation. I cant wait for it to crash again like it did in the 80's and have the re-birth it desperately needs.

I'll be getting the standard edition and be happy with it. I know Rockstar is not going to disappoint with this game, so I have no worries the single player story will be incredible.

The online for Red Dead 1 was okay, but it was strangely empty compared to the story mode and when you're playing a game with no crazy jets, planes, boats and number of motorized vehicles to take advantage of the map in other ways, then it makes for a boring experience. I do wish that they would have implemented animals in GTA online, that was a huge chunk of the world. Going out into the water online was almost pointless, it was just a dead lifeless sea.

£74.99 in the UK for the special edition (PSN store), so seeing as that's digital - no map, so £15 for a story mission, horse, outfit, and some cash? LOL.

Actually saying that - £59.99 in the UK for the STANDARD edition. That's totally ridiculous when you can get it for £49.99 on Amazon. Shouldn't digital be cheaper due to not having to produce discs, logistics costs etc?

I'll tell you what, Rockstar. I'll buy the special edition when you release it on PC. Otherwise I'll stick with my "standard" edition (though you probably want to call it the peasant edition or something).

@OrgeLambart: They develop primarily for consoles - I don't understand why this comes up every single time they talk about a game. It's nothing new, it hasn't BEEN new for almost 2 decades. They make console games, and if you are lucky, those get ported to PC.

Furthermore, if you are that concerned about where your games are - maybe get a device that was built for playing games, instead of getting butt-hurt your personal computer doesn't do everything.

@OrgeLambart: First of all I'm not a 'console gamer'. I have a big-ass gaming PC. I just have realistic expectations about what is going where.

Also why would anyone in their right mind be upset that a game isn't exclusive? As if more people being able to play was ever a bad thing...

@skyhighgam3r: you obviously haven't spent much time around forums with PS or Xbox fans, they literally cry like new born babies when their exclusive games get put on the PC or god forbid the other system.

I agree, games should be on all available formats, but many people are all.... waaa so and so isn't exclusive anyway..

I'm a huge Red Dead fan, but I'm starting to get a bad feeling. Story missions locked behind a preorder wall? Money boosters? I'm just waiting for the Sharkcard equivalent to be announced and my enthusiasm will be fully dashed.

Its a bit more detailed here

Sounds a bit like pay to win, or easier to play. The part that isn't so clear is the extra bank robbery.

they are locking extra story content behind a paywall... AT LAUNCH? that brings the total cost (of the special edition) to $100 for folks in canada. yea... no thanks. looks like rockstar is sinking to an all time low -- gta online/lack of story content with gta v and now this... we haven't even heard about the other terrible micro transactions they potentially have planned for it yet. i'll pick this game up used for $20 in that case. i won't be supporting these types of idiotic practices in the gaming industry. never, under any circumstances, make exclusive single player content available at launch for an extra fee. if a publisher wants to put out a standalone expansion of sorts down the line that is fine in my books since it does not impact the intention of the main campaign. are sony and cd projekt the only publishers who understands this simple concept? i mean, come on rockstar! you will sell 20m+ copies of red dead 2... you will make over a billion dollars on the game... are you THAT fucking greedy to nickel and dime your core audience despite all the support they have given you over the years?

@Xristophoros: Another thing is that none of the editions contain everything. For instance, you only get certain extras if you order digitally so those who order physical copies won't get those "extras" and people who order digitally don't get some of the extras physical folks get. They did a breakdown and in order to get all the content you would have to buy all the physical and digital editions with the way they did it. That is disgusting. I get having tiers, thats normal, but typically with tiers the tier above the one below gets what the one below had and then extras, but here they did things differently. You can Google to see the breakdown and its insanely horrid. Robbery.......

@Xristophoros: Yeah, full on expansions for Singleplayer (Half-Life: Opposing Force, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, etc.) are always welcome, but stuff that could have EASILY been in the final game itself being sold separately is like buying a Lego set and having to purchase an extra set of pieces to complete it.

And yes, as you said, even if hypothetically RDR2 is a flop (let's hope otherwise), it'll make a ton of money regardless. Hell, GTA V is the best selling piece of entertainment in modern history, so there's no doubt that Rockstar will always make a killing with their games. Them seeing a need to make MORE money at an inconvenience to players is just ridiculous.

@redhedjack: Right, a big difference between the old stlye expansion packs that were created after the release of the full game and added a chunk of new content. Now the main game just has missions and extras taken out to justify ripping us off.

Day 1 DLC is evil.

Normally when devs come up with additional ideas, they find ways to implement them into the actual game rather than just store em and sell em to us later.

It's the same principle of a Ratchet & Clank game only having 6 weapons, and the rest being sold as DLC.

I know more than a few individuals who will be ordering some of those collector’s edition pronto. With that said I’m not too sold on the idea of story mode content already being offered as an extra before the game has even dropped. I imagine Red Dead 2 will take many of the business practices introduced in GTA5 and expand on them indefinitely.

It’s kind of sad in the gaming world we live in now where this kind of thing is the norm but at the same time some of the blame is on us the consumers for bending to this kind of practice.

@videogameninja:

The thing is, they could put stuff in lot boxes or season passes, like many games.

There are many games I've enjoyed and not felt the need for additional content. Plus based on GTA V, the amount of enjoyment I got for £40 I'd be tempted to go for a special edition.
