Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Is A PS5 Launch Window Game

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one of the banner first-party games for PS5, and we got a brand-new look at Gamescom.

Insomniac's Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was a showpiece game for the PlayStation 5 debut, with a dimension-hopping mechanic that demonstrates how the SSD can be used to impact the game experience. During Gamescom Opening Night Live, we got a new look at the game and learned a bit more about how Insomniac is taking advantage of the PS5's increased horsepower. It's going to be arriving sooner than expected, too. In fact, it will be here soon after the PS5 itself.

The ONL gameplay demo was an extended version of the one featured during the PS5 reveal event this past June. Early on in the demo, Ratchet inadvertently shoots Dr. Nefarious's Dimensionator, causing dimensional rifts to appear everywhere. Ratchet quickly learns how to use these rifts to his benefit; the lombax can use his new Rift Tether to grapple glowing yellow rifts and pull himself into them, reaching new platforms. You can watch the full gameplay demo below.

Now Playing: Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PS5 Gameplay Demo | Gamescom 2020

Following the demo, Gamescom ONL host Geoff Keighley spoke with Insomniac's Mike Daly and Marcus Smith, who shed a bit more light on the upcoming game. According to Insomniac, the PS5's horsepower allows the team to fill the game world with density and life. Players also won't experience any load screens at all during the game.

In terms of story, Insomniac says Rift Apart is an "extension" of Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, although the game also serves as a standalone adventure, so you don't need to have played any previous entries to enjoy it. That said, Insomniac teases that there will be returning characters and other nods to previous games that longtime fans will appreciate.

Just like the debut trailer, the Rift Apart gameplay demo ended with another look at a mysterious new female lombax. Insomniac didn't share any further details about her, but the studio reconfirmed that she'll be playable in the game. Rift Apart has also been used as an example of how developers are using the unique qualities of the PS5 DualSense controller. One weapon, the Enforcer, will deliver a bigger blast if you push past the resistance from the adaptive triggers.

Ratchet & Clank does not have a release date, but Insomniac confirmed that the game will arrive within PS5's launch window. Sony hasn't revealed a release date or price for the system, but that should be coming sometime soon. Given that Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is also planned to launch around the console's release date, developer Insomniac certainly looks to be keeping busy. It became a first-party PlayStation studio about a year ago after having primarily developed games for Sony already.

The company recently opened pre-registration for the next-gen console.

Lunch window means usually 3-6 months after release so i wished Sony would be more specific.

Using the term "launch" is clever as leads many to believe its just a matter of 2-3 weeks after launch.

Still,i thought Rachet is further away from launching and good to see that players will not wait for too long to play this game.

Also,at end of the day,a stable 60fps at lower resolution is a good and needed option despite the jabs on the PS5.

Sucks for those to bought expensive gaming TVs in expectations of 4k/raytracing at 60 fps but imo,the vast majority does not have such tvs at home(i will keep my 1080p panasonic for at least 2 more years before upgrading) and will be happy playing good games at good performances

Yea, the more I see of the PS5 the more I will be waiting for a refresh in the form of some PS5 pro when there are more than just a few titles that interest me on the platform that aren't avail on PC. "According to DigiTimes, Sony's Taiwanese supply chain has revealed the PS5's lifecycle could be shorter than any other PS console to have come before it."

All this talk about 4k, and 8k capable console gaming, and we are stuck with 4k, or 60fps in reality. I will wait comfortably with my PC. I will wait until they can actually deliver on the hype they have been pushing/riding. Apologists don't even bother replying.

Did people really believe you would be able to play AAA-style games at 4K @ 60 FPS, with Ray Tracing, at Ultra-like settings?
In order to that on PC, you'd need a RTX 2080 Super — which costs at least $700.

The whole console, with controller included, is rumoured to cost $499.

You'll be able to play the game at 4K @ 30FPS or ~3K @ 60 FPS. That is quite amazing for $499.

@mssangol: Neither console is going to deliver 4k 60fps at the beginning of the next generation. Perhaps they'll be upgraded to that or closer to it later, but you can be sure anyone who is latching onto it as a way of throwing poop at one of the consoles is a fanboi of the other one. IT's rather silly. What they both look to be delivering is a serious and basically equivalent upgrade from this generation and that's good enough for most of us who will be happy playing on either or both.

@moh06031996: What? So I am a pony by others, and an Xbot by you? LOL, I can't keep up. I was talking about how they downgraded our Ratchet from the previous debut. No biggie, it's gonna be fun either way. Day one for me.

PS5 with 30fps Ratchet game in 2020/2021?

What's next? A PlayStation EyeToy comeback?

@johnny0779: Why are you being intentionally dishonest?

Insomniac has confirmed that there is a 60fps mode, (guessing it will be at a 1440p resolution, but unconfirmed).

It appears that you actively campaign against the PS5, but it isn't nice to mislead people. Please have more respect for other users.

Thank you. 🌈

@thecupidstunts: As the articles says "60fps on LOWER RESOLUTION"

I'm pretty sure even the PS4 pro can run this game as well in 4k@30fps....lol

With the ps5 there's always a trade off.

I hope you can find a way to be more accepting of other consoles, and let people enjoy the new console generation without excessive bias 😁

Thank you.

@thecupidstunts: I'm not saying it won't be fun...heck even Tetris with graphics from 40 years ago can still be fun.

But don't come here and say that I'm wrong when I said Ratchet and Clank can't run at 60fps in the resolution that matters in a console releasing in 2020 which is Native 4k.

@johnny0779: Probably 5% of PCs can run most games at 4K and 60fps and they cost a fortune to build compared to a console's retail price. Your expectations are ridiculously out of whack....and apparently intentionally so.

@esqueejy: Have you ever heard of optimization tools?

PC, and consoles uses totally different optimization tools to take advantage of their capabilities and minimize their disadvantages as much as possible...heck even the Switch uses different tools...how do you think The Witcher 3 and Crysis were planned to run on a console that has 2010 technology in it.

Except that's not what you said Johnny. What you said was "PS5 with 30fps Ratchet game in 2020/2021?"

And when you were specifically asked by FlameVega if it was really 30fps, you said "yes, sadly it is". You could have mentioned that there is also a 60fps mode, but you chose not to.

Please do not insult my intelligence by claiming that you weren't being disingenuous.

@thecupidstunts: Logically depends on the developer's best interest, for example Microsoft is making sure MOST (if not all) of their studios to release games running at the highest framerate possible while keeping a Native resolution.

In the case of the 3rd party studios like Ubisoft, are trying to keep an even field by not providing certain games like the Xbox version of Assassin's Creed with a higher framerate most possibly because other platforms wouldn't be able to run that much higher and avoid friction with those partners.

In other words there would be many 3rd party developers trying to find a middle ground even if that means Xbox gets to be held back.

It would come down to which console sells best this time around in order for them to support "best graphics vs best interest."

@johnny0779: I edited my post, but thank you for this response.

It sounds Ike you are saying that the XBOX will be somewhat of a letdown as well since it won't be hitting 60fps 4k on all games.

Maybe the devs will find ways to squeeze more juice out of consoles as time goes on, but I'm not sure about 60fps at native 4k on all games.

@thecupidstunts: No, what he's doing is shifting the blame for XBox Series X not hitting 4K@60fps to Sony and developers, claiming that developers will develop their games to the lowest common denominator so that, e.g., Sony doesn't get mad that XBox has a better version. It's a way for him to justify his wrongheaded fanboi claims that the XBox Series X hardware actually does support full 4K@60fps. It doesn't...so he moves the goal posts with a conspiracy theory about developers and their software so that it's no longer about the Xbox SX's hardware. It's nonsense. XBox SX isn't as powerful as CURRENT medium-high-end PC and they certainly can't push out 4K@60fps, particularly with raytracing turned on.

@Barighm: Yep. What Captain Fanboi seems not to understand is that if developers chose (on either new console) to push 60fps, they'd essentially be delivering us a game from this generation in terms of graphical fidelity and a whole host of other aspects of the game, but which manages to push its way to 60fps. THAT is what is meant by choice. It's essentially zero-sum in many ways, a give and take. To get 60fps, sacrifices must be made elsewhere, which is proven by the toggle feature in R&C, which is a feature we're going to be seeing a whole lot of in the next generation on both consoles, giving us the choice to push the graphics, etc., while remaining at 30fps or to dial some things back in order to get to 60fps.

People can huff and puff and claim they'd rather play at 60fps than see a huge leap in graphical fidelity, but they're the minority and marketing departments know it.

And here's the overarching point: This is, in fact a zero-sum game no matter how powerful the hardware gets, because there will always be demand for and reason to reach for higher graphical fidelity and other aspects of the gaming experience while balancing framerate.

Lastly, to the extent we see any difference between the consoles in terms of a particular game managing to reach 60fps on one, but not the other, it won't be the hardware that's at fault either. It will likely be a matter of the game engine and optimization working better on one platform than the other...and that could go either direction. It's becoming less likely to happen though since Sony seems to have abandoned, or at least moved away from, it's insistence on using some sort of unique proprietary hardware system like the PS3's cell processor.

@Barighm: YES, it's up to the developers of course, but when it comes to you first party games such as the case of Insomniac with Ratchet and Clank is quite embarrassing, as they are indicating the PS5 can't run it any higher or they are not interested in making gaming a better experience by choice.

@johnny0779: XBox Series X will be primarily 30fps as well...likely with a toggle to switch to 60fps for a decrease in resolution and/or post-processing effects, etc., in some games. Next gen, at least the beginning of it, is not going to involve hyper-realistic ray-traced graphics at 4k and 60fps for any console.

@esqueejy: Or PC. There is literally no platform in existence right now that can handle any level of ray tracing beyond 30fps. And the ray tracing we're seeing right now is super basic. We likely won't see the real deal until the RTX3000 series.

@Barighm: True. There was a good article over at IGN reviewing one of iBuyPower's monster pre-built machines with all the bells and whistles...top line MoBo, an i9-10series chip, custom water cooling, 2080Ti...everything you could imagine...and it was only achieving mid-40s for framrates at 4K with ray tracing on when they did the benchmarks on several top games. 4k@60fps is a few years out from now for everyone (barring a very few who might achieve it at very very high expense).

@esqueejy: I agree, most 3rd party Series X games will run at 30fps...not because it can't handle something better, but as I said before, it's up to developers best interest to keep every console on an even field to avoid friction among partners.

@johnny0779: Wrong. The hardware is exceedingly similar to the PS5 and won't be able to push 4k@60fps. Also, it is absolutely not in developers best interests to forgo competition and deliberately hamstring their own products. When it comes to producing 4k@60fps: If they could, they would. It's how you beat your rivals for market share and profit. Positing that developers deliberately produce inferior products is nothing but conspiracy-type nonsense invented out of thin air to justify your wrongheaded position.

@esqueejy: While I do agree it's not in developers best Interest to have one console output far better performance over the other as it would only cause disgruntled partnerships, but it happens, we saw it with Tomb Raider in which the PS4 version was far superior than the Xbox One and vice versa with Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One X vs PS4 pro.

About your comment "The hardware is exceedingly similar" you couldn't be more wrong, did you know the Xbox Series X has the power of the PS5+PS4 Combined?.....so I wouldn't say "exceedingly similar"... if a developer would truly use that power at its fullest, it could make the PS5 look like a cheap Fisher Price toy in comparison.

@johnny0779: "While I do agree it's not in developers best Interest to have one console output far better performance over the other"

Agree with who? I didn't say that in any way. In fact, it's quite the opposite: It benefits developers immensely to have one console out-compete the other. It gives them a platform on which to maximize their game development, to create and sell a superior product. The inferior platforms wouldn't be angry about it or somehow upset such that it would cause a "disgruntled partnership" with the developers. They'd be happy to have the product optimized to work on their platform so they have more reasons for people to buy their platform. For example, Nintendo/Switch is more than happy to be offering people inferior versions of games that run at much higher resolutions and frame rates, etc., on PC or the other consoles. They're even pushing those games out years after they were most popular...AND THEY'RE SELLING. Again, you have a totally wrongheaded idea of how business and this industry works, and you've latched onto a conspiracy theory to justify it.

"did you know the Xbox Series X has the power of the PS5+PS4 Combined?"

Hard to "know" something that is a completely false and absurd exaggeration. Where do you people come up with this crap?

@esqueejy: It has been publicly known disparity in gaming performance only causes friction between partners and obviously fans, actually that's the reason Ubisoft chosen to keep Assassin's Creed Valhalla at 30fps on consoles with the statement "we want to offer an equal experience on every system" most probably as a reference to the PS5 not being capable to handle Native 4k@60fps as Microsoft would have loved seeing it.

About "an exaggeration on the Series X being that powerful, just check the math below:

Math Never Lies:

PS5: 10.2 TF

PS4: +1.8 TF

--------------------------

= 12.0 TF

12TF exactly the power of the Series X

@johnny0779: "t has been publicly known disparity in gaming performance only causes friction"

No, it causes competition, which results in higher profits, innovation and better products. That one developer said something about "equal" experiences for their games is an exception to the rule. The number of games with differences in performance on different consoles...sometimes favoring one console, sometimes the other...puts the lie to your delusion.

As to the TF, it is not additive in the manner you are trying to add them. Moreover, it is not even remotely the only thing that determines performance and the difference isn't that significant. But I get it, it was the one difference that XBox fanbois could latch onto in order to try to win the silly "console war" argument, so they cling to it obsessively. And yet, the new consoles will both deliver pretty much the same performance....just like they did this generation...and that's because of the hardware, not an industry conspiracy to make the gaming experience seem equivalent.

And again, and finally, because I'm getting sick of your ridiculous trolling....NOTHING CAN DO 4K@60fps RIGHT NOW, NOT EVEN PCs THAT MAKE YOUR PRECIOUS XBOX SERIES X LOOK LIKE A GLORIFIED CALCULATOR. You are going to be sadly disappointed when XBox Series X doesn't do it, but I guess you've already lined up your baseless rationalizations for that fact so you can sleep at night.
