Rare's back catalogue turned into Kinect Sports Rivals DLC

Is this the closest we'll ever get to Banjo Kazooie on Xbox One?

No Caption Provided

Kinect Sports Rivals developer Rare has rifled through its old titles to produce a set of DLC items revolving around Banjo Kazooie and other titles, Microsoft has announced.

Alongside Banjo Kazooie, the new DLC packs also include Battletoads, Blast Corps, Perfect Dark, and Viva Pinata. Each pack includes a handful of new challenges and some unlockable items.

There's also a free update, which adds new challenges based on your choice of team, and has you squaring off against other members of Eagle Legion, Viper Network, or Wolf Clan. I'm a Viper Network guy myself, which is basically the Kinect Sports Rivals version of Slytherin.

"Kinect Sports Rivals is an inconsistent collection that will get you up off the couch and moving around for a bit of mild fun," said GameSpot's Carolyn Petit in her Kinect Sports Rivals review, "but that's about the best you can say for it."

Another excuse to call Gamestop and ask for a copy of Battletoads

Avatar image for Someguy1212

<< LINK REMOVED >> really? cause most people hated it and most said it was the worst one made.

Avatar image for Spartan_418

Great, now I can call GameStop and ask them

"hey, do you guys have Battletoads... DLC codes in stock?"

Rare should be taken outside....and beaten to death.

I try look at it from Rare's perspective. Less work, more money (Microsoft), and its not like most gamers appreciate any work developers do anyway. I would go as far to say gamers are the most hateful hobby inthusist's on the planet.

So yeah I would probably do the same thing.

I wish Rare still made games I like. :(

Avatar image for santinegrete

<< LINK REMOVED >> me too man. I can't believe this studio made the original Killer Instinct and PRO AM championship.

Avatar image for parabol69

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> To this day RC Pro AM is one of my favorite NES games of all time.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> hell, it's one of my 16 bit fav games and the only racer I like.

how the mighty have fallen eh rare

Avatar image for rasterror

How about Rare's back catalog is turned into remakes of those games?

Avatar image for Simulator_Shock

Not a single thing I read here made any goddamn sense...

Avatar image for randomkidlol

<< LINK REMOVED >> Typical ability to write of the average gamespot editor. Elementary school children can write better than the crap that some editors (cougheddiecough) get away with on a regular basis.

Avatar image for toddx77

<< LINK REMOVED >> Basically Rare took a bunch of clothing items from their past games and made them DLC for the avatars in Kinect Sports Rivals.

Avatar image for Simulator_Shock

It's my fault that gamespot editors have the grammar and sentence structuring skills of a 4th grader? I would say you're the dumb one here.

Avatar image for Sevenizz

I got it easily - so did many others.

Maybe it's you?

Avatar image for Pyrosa

Wait, what?!? This doesn't make sense.

Avatar image for Sevenizz

I take it reading comprehension isn't your strong suit, eh?

Avatar image for Simulator_Shock

@Stevenjizz - if the poorly written article made sense to you then that would explain a lot.

Avatar image for vader501st

I suppose that means no Perfect Dark either.

God, I wish they'd brought back that instead.

Avatar image for Someguy1212

<< LINK REMOVED >> As long as Microfail owns them they will never be able to truly shine again

Avatar image for VegasDawg

<< LINK REMOVED >> There is a rumor of a Perfect Dark reboot in the vain of Sony's Uncharted series, it is supposed to be announced at E3, RUMOR

Martin's trolling again...turd.

Rare is Rare in name only now. They are a shell of the company that were the 2nd greatest developers of the 32/64-bit era behind only Nintendo.

They've been dying a slow and painful death ever since Nintendo sold their shares to Micro$haft.

Luckily I still own an SNES and N64 and can pop in Killer Instinct Gold, Goldeneye, Donkey Kong Country etc and relive Rare's glory days anytime I feel like it.

Avatar image for LomaxGnome

<< LINK REMOVED >> While this is true, it's also silly to think that a company should in any way resemble what it was twenty years ago, especially in an industry that has evolved as significantly as video games.

Avatar image for rarson

The truly sad thing about Rare's transformation is the fact that they built the company through cutting-edge technology. Rare used high-end SGI workstations to create some of the best-looking SNES games ever made. They pushed the envelope every time they made a game, and they continued this right up until Microsoft came into the picture. And Microsoft, like always, has an eye for great studios but no idea how to use them. No surprise why all the talent left when they took over.

Avatar image for Furwings

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> True, I'll give you that. However I wasn't really referring to only personnel, but more the company philosophy, direction etc as well.

Avatar image for brian_ghattas

All these classic franchises wasted on worthless DLC. Sad. A new Battletoads game would be sweet but Microsoft doesn't think so. Not enough can be made via microtransactions, I reckon.

Avatar image for rasterror

Actually rumor has it that they are announcing a Battle Toads remake at E3 among a whole bunch of other games.

Avatar image for _Silent_Jay_

<< LINK REMOVED >> I see it as them testing the waters. Maybe not the best way to test the waters, but it is a way that has the least amount of risk.

Avatar image for jrcast84

<< LINK REMOVED >> The problem with Battletoads for MS, is that it cant be made into a shooter.

Avatar image for raddys2001

I can see your point especially when they tried making a new Banjo game which was good but not many people bought it.

Avatar image for jlwaddell

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Maybe more of a spiritual successor to Diddy Kong Racing? That had Banjo.

Avatar image for Tiwill44

<< LINK REMOVED >> Nuts & Bolts wasn't a Banjo-Kazooie game, it was just a game featuring Banjo. Kinda like a spin-off.

Avatar image for psuedospike

It's always so sad to hear more news about, at one time, the most prolific studio with enormous potential being managed into the ground and forced to make garbage for years and years.

I kinda wish Rare just closed up shop instead of selling out to make shit Kinect games.

Avatar image for rarson

That's essentially what they did. The Stamper brothers sold it and then eventually left, and most of the talent followed suit, so it's basically just a name now.

Avatar image for Gallowhand

This is just sad. If Rare can't do anything with those franchises any more, then give them to someone else to develop.

<< LINK REMOVED >> All that needs to be said.

Avatar image for GlaciusXL

For me, RARE was 1994-2001. Every game they did was packed to the max and making the hardware bust at the seams with the visuals they were pushing. There was never a doubt that they gave it their all. From then until now... Avatar items? Fantastic...

Avatar image for tomtutt

Microsoft turned to Double Helix to develop Killer Instinct. That, should tell you all you need to know about Rare's capabilities now.

Avatar image for Stebsis

<< LINK REMOVED >> Killer Instinct is a good game, Double Helix did very good job so not really sure if you're praising or mocking Rare that's been making bad/mediocre games lately and with them making Kinect Sports games I doubt that's going to change

Avatar image for UFOLoche

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> He's not saying that. Yes, Killer Instinct is a GREAT game(Coming from a Sony fan here), but you have to keep in mind that, before KI, all Double Helix was really known for was:

1.Ruining the Silent Hill franchise(Granted, Downpour came first, but Homecoming was FAR FAR FAR worse).

2.A bunch of rubbish shovelware.

So for Microsoft to put their faith in KI, that's a bit concerning. Same with Capcom with Strider, but both games turned out great so I can't complain
