Quartet of titles hit Wii's Virtual Console

Ice Hockey, Gunstar Heroes, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Alien Crush are now available for purchase from Nintendo's online store.

The wave of old-school games continues to pile onto the Wii's Virtual Console. Nintendo today announced that four more games from the days of yesteryear are now available for purchase. Joining the ranks of Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, and Sonic the Hedgehog are one title from the Nintendo Entertainment System, a pair from the Sega Genesis, and one from the TurboGrafx-16.

Gamers who like their hockey 8-bit can now download Ice Hockey for 500 Wii points ($5). Originally released in 1988 for the NES, Ice Hockey features six national teams and three different weight classes of players, allowing coaches to go with a nimble lineup or a team of crushing bruisers.

Gunstar Heroes, which first appeared on the Sega Genesis in 1993, brings side-scrolling run-and-gun action to the Wii. Playing as one of the famed Gunstar twins, gamers will take on Colonel Red and a host of his minions in an attempt to foil his plans of destruction. Gunstar Heroes will set gamers back 800 Wii points ($8).

The curiously named Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, also originally a Genesis title, is a puzzle game featuring characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. Like the popular puzzle game Puyo Puyo, this game tasks gamers with matching four blocks of the same color and causing mayhem for opponents. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine costs 800 Wii points ($8).

Late last week, Hudson Entertainment dropped a few hints that a TurboGrafx-16 game would be making an appearance on the Virtual Console today. Based on clues, many suspected it would be Alien Crush...and they were right. Alien Crush was originally released in 1989 and sells for 600 Wii points ($6).

All four games can be purchased from the WIi Shop Channel. Nintendo plans to add new Virtual Console games each Monday.

They need the Zelda games for the N64 and Super Mario World

Avatar image for captainalpha1

These games are pretty sweet, but where's Super Mario World? That game was awsome back in the day, hope theyget it soon.

Lasafrog: If you spent that kinda money on those games then you, my friend, are the one who got ripped off. Not to mention you Ebay commentators are forgetting that when you go find the game, you actually own something that many care to collect. VC is nothing more than legal emulation, and you pay a ton for what thats worth. VC has some great stuff, but it's terribly overpriced. I still can't stop from buying the TurboGrafx stuff though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 100% right you are.

Avatar image for searandrage

.........nintendo is kind of slow at getting N64 games out eh? Its taking a bit too long for those to come out. The only games that seem to come out are NES, Genesis, and TurboGrafx

Avatar image for feryl06

an RPG would be awesome---hope they can get one out soon!

Gunstar Heroes Rule! Great game from Genesis era!

Avatar image for interpolred

I care. Not flaming on you, and not trying to start a debate, but I really like knowing about these updates. It's good to know Nintendo is keeping things at a steady pace with Virtual Console.

YEESSSS gunstar heros ruled. I hope they bring back all the great games of sega, nes and snes and 64. Go nintindo you never ceas to amaze the fans. It would also be nice to see a remaid version of resident evil 2 and 3.

The Wii is no dream machine for emulating N64 games. They're porting on a case-by-case basis. Same would apply to Saturn games, with its tricky twin CPUs and the way different games used different processors, different resolutions, and so forth. Have they committed to any CD-based medium yet on VC? Nay. Consider a game like Tekken 2 on PSP - it's 530 megs. Saturn games would be huge downloads too. A lot more storage needed by users, and a lot more bandwidth by Nintendo, if they dip into a range of CD-based games on VC. Meaning per game cost = higher too. Besides, unlike a 530 MB Tekken 2 via PS3, getting into large media when their system has no hard drive isn't as practical or convenient for Nintendo or its users.

Gunstar Heroes! Gunstar Heroooooooooes! I'm a big fan of Treasure now, but unfortunately, I missed out on this one back in the day. Thank you VC for this second chance.

Avatar image for TryMe01

this goes to prove that everyone else has a fair go besides Nintendo Australia...

Avatar image for Bio_Spark

I'm pretty sure the VC has a new best-seller with Gunstar Heroes. I love Treasure, just about everything they touch is gold gameplay-wise, though they never seem to sell. I wonder if Mischief Makers will come along eventually?

I've heard good things about gunstar heroes and dr. robotnik's was awesome back in the day. But, please, I just want Super Metroid. SUPER METROID!

Gunstar Heroes is one great game. Lots of good games they are adding to the download list already. Cant wait to see my classics as the months go by.

Avatar image for willjoea

Glad to see Gunstar Heroes. Its a classic but I'm still patiently waiting for Wave Race 64. Come on big N Wave Race, Wave Race !!!!

Avatar image for kh22792

I won't get my Wii till Christmasa, but the first VC game i download will probably be Gunstar Heroes because i heard that game is supposed to be amazing, but i'm still holding out for some really good games, like super mario bros 3 (greatest classic mario game in my opinion) and i always wanted to try super mario rpg since i heard about it a couple years ago. Viva la Wiivolution!

Avatar image for TckeyTheGlove

Ahh, the deliciousness that is Gunstar. Waiting around for Forgotten Worlds, Super Mario RPG, Mario 3, and Starfox 64 now. (Some Saturn games would be pretty cool....)

To mhder: well said. $5-$10 is an absolute steal for some of these great games.

Avatar image for revamparts

Jaeme they want you to buy these while you wait for the better titles that you mentiones. Goldeneye is iffy because Rare developed for it. I have to say however that Gunstar Heroes is the best game on the virtual console so far save Super Mario 64. Gunstar Heroes is a first string shoot-em-up for sure.

Avatar image for iameightyseven

Purchased Gunstar Heroes.

Avatar image for Jaeme

No offence intended towards the fans of these games, but so far the majority of games on the VC have been second or third stringers. I was hoping to see the Super Mario games, more of the good Sonics, Bionic Commando, etc. Heck even second string mario games like Dr Mario would be welcome. Where`s Donkey Kong Country and Star Fox 64? Or how about the great liscenced games of Golden Eye or Star WArs Shadows of the Empire? I`m a Canadian and Ice Hockey doesn`t even interest me. If they just released the titles I`ve hinted at it would be a great addition(if not an equal to)XBLA.

Avatar image for chibi-acer

Yay! I've been waiting for Gunstar Heroes since they announced it a few months ago. I never played the original but heard that it's a classic.

Avatar image for RaiKageRyu

Gunstar Heroes! Woot! Now that's a treasure worth downloading if you haven't played it yet.

Avatar image for Stillmatic91

Some good titles...They need to put A Link To The Past though

Avatar image for Platyphyllum

Gunstar Heroes! Wooo.

Avatar image for psychowarden

All this, and yet they still have only one SNES title up. Enough with the Genesis and TurboGrafx games already, show some respect for the best console in Nintendo's history. I mean, seriously. Give us some Chrono Trigger, Mario World, or Link to the Past and we're set for life.

Woah.....Gunstar Heroes. Going to download that right now.

To Jebril: Why did you not mention all the broken games Xbox Live has? Now stop your b^tching.

Avatar image for Conanfan1

Streets of Rage 2 better be in the next batch of games.

Avatar image for mhder

People spend $4 for a latte but a game for $5 is a rip off? Yeah sure, they're not state of the art anymore but it's your choice to buy and if you like it enough, $5-$10 is a small price to pay these days.

Avatar image for martoon96

Ice Hockey=Best hockey game fights.

Avatar image for usedtype

Gunstar Heroes was the best Genesis game ever. Unlike many on the virtual console, I would gladly pay $8 for it.

Avatar image for Lasafrog

Darko31786 people who are **** about pricing, if you bought any of these games off eBay, the only place to get them these days, they are twice if not three times as much money. The VC pricing is a steal. When i bought contra for NES of eBay it was 20 bucks, Zelda 2 $15. Your not getting ripped off believe me. If you spent that kinda money on those games then you, my friend, are the one who got ripped off.
