Quantum Break on PC Can't Run at 60 FPS, Doesn't Have Quit Button

Quantum Break's issues include multiple frame rate problems, the image quality, and frequent crashing.

The Xbox One version of Quantum Break released this week to mostly positive reviews, but it looks like the PC version is crippled by multiple issues. According to Digital Foundry, the game can't run at a consistent, smooth frame rate, among other things.

Digital Foundry put together a performance breakdown video on Quantum Break, detailing the game's many problems (via Eurogamer). One of the larger issues is the fact that the game can't run at 60 FPS on a 60Hz monitor. The tech outlet said that it's not possible to reach a frame rate that matches a monitor's refresh rate, even if they used an Nvidia Titan X and ran the game at 720p on its lowest settings. They note that if you use a monitor with a refresh rate of 120 or 144Hz, the maximum frames increase, but it never results in a consistent frame rate.

In addition to that, the setting that lets you lock the frame rate to 30 FPS doesn't work properly. The PC version has a frame-pacing issue, which results in a more "jerky" experience. Digital Foundry notes that "it will never appear as consistent as the Xbox One version."

Quantum Break's image quality is brought up, too. The PC version is saddled with an Xbox One feature that frees up resources to help produce a clean image. The option to disable this is absent, meaning that at 1080p, it's producing a "reconstructed 720p image" as opposed to the native HD resolution. Digital Foundry says it works well on televisions when you're not as close to the screen, but high-resolution monitors reveal the blurriness and lack of detail.

Crashing is another issue that plagues the PC version, though it's not the game that's crashing. It's actually the Nvidia driver that suffers from the issue, and through much testing, Digital Foundry found that Quantum Break is unstable on Nvidia hardware. In the video, they note that the AMD R9 390 card has about a "20 frame advantage" over the Nvidia GTX 970, which is a gap they say "is absolutely remarkable." They say they can't recall "the last time [they saw] a gap that large."

Other issues include the lack of a quit button, forcing players to use Alt+F4 if they want to exit the game; limited enhancements that don't separate it much from the Xbox One version; and the significant performance drop when installing the game on anything other than a solid state drive.

Digital Foundry points its fingers at the Universal Windows Platform, which they say "is a huge issue for the PC right now." They say it restricts players from being able to fix some of these issues, like the frame pacing, on their own. They also note in the video that the game shames you for piracy with an eye patch when you play a legitimate copy offline.

Quantum Break received a score of 6 in GameSpot's review.

"Getting to the end of Quantum Break can be an interesting ride at times, but no matter how impressive the combat is, or how great the game looks, there's no getting around the fact that it's driven by a story with limited appeal and hindered by disappointing design decisions," GameSpot's Peter Brown said in the review.

Again, once again, my rule was proved with authenticity and saved my hard earned money, i.e. "Don't get hyped, don't pre-order, don't buy on first week, alway wait for GoTY edition, complete your backlog instead of this {insert game here]".

And this is why MS and UWP will fail miserably. They still have no clue. Its Windows live all over again.

What I do find amusing is the number of people who honestly believe this is down to hardware. The amount of utter drivel being spouted by many X1 fans is astonishing. Believing the X1 is doing something a pc cannot....seriously?

Fact is it's simply down to terrible programming. If this was a Steam release modders would have already fixed it. You only have to look at the state of RotTR on the Windows store vs Steam at launch to see what the problem is here.

This is the issue with non-open source graphics API's

I hope successful tech is built on Vulkan in the future.

This is a DX12 only title, Nvidia doesn't have hardware support for DX12 so they either try to use their drivers to emulate it or disable it altogether, it's pretty obvious why AMD is so ahead.... because they actually thought ahead. Probably also doesn't help that it's a gimped Xbox One port, seeing how weak that system is. Microsoft wants to push people to buy their hardware even though they know it's inferior so now they need to mess with PC gamers. So now all you psychotic Nvidia fanboys have seemed to be taught a lesson about blind loyalty to a specific brand or hardware instead of realizing how much we need competition and all the innovations AMD has brought to the table, now let's just hope Nvidia doesn't try to sabotage AMD by making everything PC game dx11 with gameworks.....

@ascendedmaster: Except the GTX 970 is a DX12 card.

I'm guessing that the 20fps AMD advantage is because the XB1 uses an AMD GPU and they optimised for it and then just upscaled it later for PC or something.

Why even release this on PC? If this will be the final state you should have just left it on Xbox One.

And those two GPUs should not have that much of a gap between them, not even close. This literally is lazy programming.

Is this how future MS games on PC will perform? Is this the exciting new future that MS has in store for PC gaming that we hear them go on about for the last year and a half? I surely hope not.

Is Halo Wars 2 going to be like this?

Coming from a household of gamers that chose X-One, and PC we may even pass on this title all together, I've read it seems rather rushed, and suffers from polishing. Obviously it suffers technically on optimization on PC. There are so many games now, I can afford to miss some, and unless I read raving reviews about it being fantastic, I may just pass.

@Lach0121: I agree. If you can't play a game without constantly being taken out of the experience with framerate hitches, sluggish controls & unfair deaths due to the game bugging out, then it's best to just pretend it's not even out yet.

Some games get fixed with patches or even mods over time but it looks like the UWP platform has crippled the game & many of it's performance flaws are baked in. There are plenty of other games that are actually in a playable state that I can spend my time & money on.

Once again PC games being held back by consoles and bad developers and sadly I don't see this trend going away any time soon. Also microsoft making their best efforts to make sure no one ever buys games from their store.

Why do pc versions of games have so Many problems if pc is suppose to give you the best experience over consoles pc master race right ??

@spectrexr1: Not just PC's. Latest patch for the division on xbox is deleting peoples characters lol

@spectrexr1: I have over 500 games on Steam, over 500 more retail/Uplay/Origin, I can count on one hand the number of times I've had major Issues with games. Granted I haven't bought QB and nor will I until they sort out the UWP mess.

Most issues are simply people trying to run at unrealistic settings for their hardware. Just go look at any major AAA release on Steam. Forums are full of people moaning they can't run at 60fps at "insert graphics preset" on hardware never intended to run at "insert graphics preset" (high/ultra etc)

Avatar image for yeah_28

@spectrexr1: even the best gaming platform can get sabotaged by developers and publishers. Luckily PC is so insanely great that it'd take 10 times more problems and crap games like this to ruin the experience.

Avatar image for garcia_jx

@spectrexr1: my guess, hardware is fragmented amongst users.

@spectrexr1: PC versions of games more often than not run better than console counterparts. Games come out on console all the time that suffer from poor frame rates and slow down. Just Cause 3 can slow down horrendously, Bloodborne used to but is better now (although it still only runs at 30fps which by PC standards is unplayable). In reviews you'll often see "Some frame rate issues" for console games but not a big deal is made of it.

I think that's the thing, PC gamers are far more fussy about how the game runs. If a game has even the slightest bit of occasional slow down then a typical PC gamer will want to adjust gfx options or do some simple .ini tweaks to get the game running flawlessly.

Many games on console don't run flawlessly but you're stuck with what you've got so you learn to get used to it and no big deal is made of it.

Trouble here, specifically, is the Windows 10 store QB is sold on. Anything bought on there can't be tweaked with .ini file adjustments or mods and can't even adjust gfx on the driver end. It totally flies in the face of what PC gaming is about and Microsoft seem oblivious to how f"$%£"% annoying that is. Their GFWL service failed, so they binned it (which means all the games I bought on there are gone without so much as even a small refund, thanks m$) And now, they've replaced their failed distribution service with a far worse one?!?!?! The mind boggles.

@spectrexr1: In reality few PC games do actually have significant problems. The other aspect that makes the issue seem worse than it is is that your average core PC gamer has high expectations of what their hardware should be able to run, and of some basic functionality a game should have on the PC platform. If you have the perspective of a plug and play console gamer, that might make it seem like all these games don't work on PC, but really they still work a lot better than the frame and resolution locked console versions.

@spectrexr1: Not sure if you are serious when you asked that question because it do sound very dumb. The games on PC or any software for that matter will not work properly as long as they are coded poorly. Fix the code and you'll see the good result. So, developers are to blame here.

If you really want to get back at PC gamers (which i'm not BTW!!) you better say or ask something that is not dumb. :)

Avatar image for bfeinberg

@SexyMiralda: That was pretty dumb wasn't it. There are only two games I have experienced in the last year that are massively broken compared to the hundreds that came out last year (Arkham Knight and this cesspool of a game).

But the largest part of the stupid decision is the preordering a digital game part. You do realize that you can just buy it on the day it comes out right? Its a digital game, they don't run out of stock.

@garvielt: You understand if there is a promotion that will give you a free copy of Quantam Break for Windows 10 (which I may be able to sell if its a redeemable code not locked to my account) just because you bought the game before the release date on Xbox one and if you were going to play it on this platform and buy it digitally anyway then what part of that is stupid?
