Quantic Dream has unveiled the first look at its new narrative adventure game Under the Waves, from developer Parallel Studios.

Set to release on August 29 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, the game is described as a "poetic underwater adventure about the engulfing power of grief." The first gameplay trailer was unveiled during the Summer Game Fest 2023, which showed off submarine and scuba diving gameplay in the ocean depths.

Alongside underwater ocean mechanics, the trailer also provided some story details, starting by introducing us to the playable character and professional diver Stan, who has been alone for three years. The game is set in the depths of the North Sea in the techno-futuristic 1970s and Stan is "struggling to overcome a life-changing loss and embrace a new future."

"Experience a surreal adventure in the depths of the North Sea--and the human psyche," the game's description reads. "Under the Waves is a narrative-driven adventure game about the engulfing power of grief... The isolation of the deep sea is a fitting manifestation of his state of mind, and as Stan retreads further into his self-imposed solitude, he starts to experience strange events far beneath the waves. He will eventually have to make a difficult choice."

Parallel Studios is known for developing 2015's White Nights--the macabre puzzle adventure game set in the 1930s--as well as the Twin Peaks-style mystery game Dark Days. For Under the Waves, Parallel Studio used Quantic Dream's motion capture, voice recording, and animation tools.

Quantic Dream itself is currently making Star Wars: Eclipse, although development has been quiet since its announcement.
