Publisher Announces Major Layoffs Just After SGF Game Reveals

This layoff will affect over 205 employees.

During 2024's Summer Game Fest, Sumo Group showcased various games, including Critter Café, Deathsprint 66, Still Wakes the Deep, A Little to the Left, and Parcel Corps. Just one day after SGF ended, the studio announced that it would be laying off 15% of its staff.

The studio said reshaping "operations across the business to better navigate the upcoming challenges expected in the coming months is a path we must now take to ensure the security of the business going forward."

The post continues by explaining that the reshaping of operations will "unfortunately include a reduction in the number of people the business can support. Every alternate route to limit the impact to our people is being considered but sadly this process of transformation will affect up to 15% of our people across the Group in Canada, UK, Poland, Czech Republic and India."

Sumo Group currently has 1,790 employees, so the 15% figure amounts to over 250 people. It's also worth pointing out that Tencent also owns Sumo Group. Earlier this year, Riot Games, which is also owned by the same company, laid off 530 of its employees.

Layoffs have been an unfortunate trend as of late. Check out our story for a deep dive into explaining why it's happening, it has become even worse this year.
