[UPDATE AND CORRECTION] Playerunknown himself, Brendan Greene, told IGN that PUBG will be available on a disc for Xbox One. GameSpot regrets the error.

The original story is below.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been an unprecedented success on PC, even though it's still in Early Access, and a Xbox One release is on the way. Now, PUBG's developer has announced that the game will get a physical version for the console too.

At E3 2017, Microsoft announced PUBG would be a "console launch exclusive" for the Xbox One and would be releasing in late 2017. While we still don't know when exactly to expect the game on the console, the game's Twitter account has just revealed that you will be able to buy a physical version of the game.

Microsoft is also reportedly working to keep the game an Xbox One exclusive for longer, attempting to delay PUBG's possible release on PlayStation 4 or other consoles. Developer Bluehole hasn't confirmed or denied the reports, which also suggest it's in discussions with all major console companies. Instead, Bluehole says, "[T]he team is solely focused on bringing the best game possible to Xbox One and PC," with nothing further to announce at this time.

Meanwhile, PUBG continues to topple milestones on Steam. Earlier this month, it surpassed 2 million concurrent players, and at this time of writing has peaked at nearly 2.2 million concurrent players as indicated on Steam's stats page. I was going to get this but Brendan Greene is such a p*ssy about Fortnite. Plus I’m not paying for a broken mod of an old game.

@lithus: Brendan Greene never said a thing about Fortnite, it was an executive at Blue Hole who was being an ass about.

The disc will include the physical version killer patch day one?

Having a physical release of a game with constant patches, refinements, balance and online-only contents is completely unnecesary. The day you place the disc into the console will be outdated. There is not so much diference if you buy a license code printed in a card.

This game is not ready for a release. Guns do not appear because of lag right at start in high population areas. Parachuting onto a roof by the edge can cause you to get stuck in the shoot while others loot before falling to death. Obvious dsync problems when you hear tink tink but they are full auto spraying then dye around a corner to what seemed to be a curved bullet, obvious problems with smoke nades and being client side so some can see through and some cannot. How can they possibly fix anything and call it a done game while having an xbox release that soon? They need to fix the game or it will die to fortnite eventually. Many streamers are already moving on and a lot of my buddies are sick of all this as well. Not to mention the still there first time load up bug many have. IT COULD BE A GREAT GAME AND LOVED.

why would you release an early access game on physical media?

@nibbin1191: yes you’re correct. The team is looking to fully launch the game early next month with an Xbox one release soon after.

@chiefwiggum16: I think this article and others like it are confused. Brendan in yesterday's interview stated that the game would be released on hard copy and that we can expect a release later this year.

The interviewer imo completely misinterpreted the info.

The game will still come to xbox preview program (online) not as a hard copy, before the end of Nov. The hard copy will release (what was supposed to be next year) apparently before the end of 2017, this part is confusing.

Hey Phil, what happened I thought you hate exclusives and want to make all games available to All gamers? Why are you hogging PUBG stopping it from going to PS4?

@garysan: Email him and ask him. Don’t know if he still does, but Phil regularly responded to emails.

@garysan: you do realise he was talking about dlc exclusives in those interviews right?

Hey Phil, what happened to PUBG being 4K on X1X? Only HDR?

Avatar image for sickemergency

@elmarine2064: They will still have free 4k update for X1X, that part has not changed.

@sickemergency: Yea, I hope so.

@elmarine2064: This has been the plan for almost two months now. I've never heard any info that says otherwise. So, I'm assuming it to still be true. This info came from Greene's mouth himself too, so ya. Hope this helped.

I wonder how all of those elitists feel about this "it'll never be released on console" release.

Avatar image for lithus

@gotrekfabian: the irony isn’t the second elitists play this clunky-old ass game mod on expensive rigs.

Avatar image for wexorian

@gotrekfabian: They feel nothing , They are part of 15 mil people if THEY were not there it would not had GOT released so you should THANK "elitists" for that.

@wexorian: SMH Point entirely missed.

There is a big difference between an enthusiast and an elitist. Something tells me you are the latter from your post. Do you want me to thank you personally?

@gotrekfabian: No i don't like game much and had not bought it.

Who cares about a physical release of a game like this? Servers go down the disc is useless.

Avatar image for Silver17

@fanboyman: There's still a lot of people that like to buy "Physical copies" of games.

If there wasn't such a large market that existed, then devs wouldn't be still doping that,,,

Avatar image for fanboyman

@Silver17: I prefer physical games too but I don't see the point of a retail online only multiplayer game.

Avatar image for Greyfox-101

@Silver17: They should stop anyway frankly considering how much markup exists on old games in the digital store.

Steam the Xbox store is not.

Avatar image for Silver17

@Greyfox-101: "Collectors editions" my good man. If you have the money to make a AAA title, then you have the money to make a collector edition to sell at launch. Hardcore fans still want that stuff, and are pretty vocal about keeping it around...

I can see this getting pushed to early 2018. "Late 2017" doesn't have a ton of months left to not even have a firm release date.

Avatar image for jinzo9988

@Greyfox-101: They would have to either have completed the action of stamping the discs or be close to getting there if they still want to make a 2017 physical release window. Granted as Tony Hawk 5 proved, you really don't have to stamp much onto a disc. Tony Hawk 5 only has the tutorial on the disc. That giant day one patch the game had? That's the rest of the game you're downloading because they actually needed that time to "complete" the game. This will probably be somewhat like that where the disc doesn't have much at all or has a fragment of finished content and they're working on the game right up until release, and for an online game I guess it really doesn't matter if there's a giant day one patch to download the rest of the game.

Avatar image for b00me

@Greyfox-101: It's definitely releasing this year, it's launching in MS's game Preview Program so it doesn't have to be "finished" for it to release. I'd guess the last week of November or first week of December.
