PUBG Might Be In Trouble If It Doesn't Evolve

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Riding the battle royale wave.

Fortnite is dominating headlines, even outside of gaming communities and circles. Internet memes around the game have gone viral, cable news shows have discussed addiction and parenting in the context of Fortnite, and celebrities and athletes are expressing their love for the game through social media and...footwear. The level of virality of Fortnite is something PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds didn't quite experience by nature of the more serious and tactical type of battle royale, even though it was more or less the trend-setter.

But this had us thinking: Is Fortnite's success a sign that another game is right around the corner to siphon PUBG's player base if PUBG doesn't evolve? In the video above, GameSpot's own editors and producers explore this question. Given PUBG's technical shortcomings and Fortnite's relatively easy conversion, there are some potential franchises that could go battle royale and overtake the game that launched this style into the mainstream. By no means are we saying that PUBG is dying--it remains Steam's most popular game by a wide margin--but we're wondering what the future holds for a game we've poured hundreds of hours into.

Now Playing: PUBG Might Be In Trouble If It Doesn't Evolve

Plenty of news has developed in the meantime and painted the battle royale gold rush in a different light: Fortnite is coming to mobile platforms and it will feature cross-play with PlayStation 4 and PC players. The premiere battle royale game just before PUBG came onto the scene was H1Z1 and it recently went free to play; although the H1Z1 player base is nowhere near that of its competitors, the new free to play model could change the landscape for these games. If you want a more direct comparison between PUBG and Fortnite, check out our video feature on how these battle royale games are drastically different.

Sorry to say you guys just danced around everything that's future to PUBG competitors without actually saying the main issue PUBG is having on PC . Cheating and supposedly fixed lag spikes seem to be the current deal breaker that's going to take it out of favor at least in my library. Region locking may help the issues, but that will only take care of CheatJing and PanJong. Now the real fix for cheating has made the game unplayable for many users, Who knows what direction they're going to take at this juncture?

As far as Call of Duty goes UBI started losing my interest beginning with Ghosts to the final end on the multiplayer debacle that was on PC with Advanced Warfare. Oh there was workarounds to find others to play it with but you had to add everyone you played with to your Steam friends. Otherwise it was just crickets going on while trying to find a multiplayer session on their servers. I seem to remember being promised dedicated servers long ago. Ubisoft lost me as a customer. WW2 dedicated servers psshhhhhaaaw We're over COD at least I am as well as the guys I played within AW. 8-10 of us swore off UBI for good and fair reason in our eyes at least. Sorry if this post seems toxic it's not meant to be so. Hows this for a kick... I got Wildlands with my purchase of a video card there it sits in my steam library not installed even once to see how it looked or ran I lost that much faith in Ubisoft.... [End Rant] Thanks for what you guys do for you are appreciated! .......... Chy

I would love to see BR in a reduced/modified version in Destiny 2. Those large PVP arenas from D1 have not been brought back so far. I could imagine BR mode where 20 high level monsters fight 20 guardians, after the monsters are slain the remaining guardians are fighting for the crown

The whole genre of battle royale (if it is called a genre) is a phase and will pass by. There is a hype now because of a few titles (Fortnite/PUBG/The Darwin Project) etc being aggressively marketed worldwide and some are free even. Just wait for this E3 and hope they all announce big titles for different platforms or multis and battle royale games will be buried again. not that I hate it but its just going this way.

If PUBG improved it's cosmetic offerings and Micros on top of going Free 2 Play. Fortnite would stand no chance. Fortnite being f2p is what gives it silly cartoonish action it's major appeal over Fortnite. And being a solid build game I'll give it that. With that the two games cater to different shooter fan base. Some like them both, others prefer Fortnite or PUBG. Which makes sense, the both are part of two different sub genres.

The whole genre is in trouble because these games - if they hold your attention long enough and attract enough players - always end up full of griefers and cheaters.

The only reason why Fortnite is so popular is because it's free. I mean, I like the game, but let's be real here, if it was like $20 or $30, the numbers would be much lower.

I don't get the appeal of this "battle royale" thing. Walk, walk, run, shot, being shot by sniper, game over, start over. I respect people who like those games, but I prefer to catch up with my backlog for now.

@StonerDemon: Well, casual gamers like dominating, teasing on each other, to see who is the best, the strongest, the coolest, to show off to everyone or whatever, just simply as that.

FORTNITE- you get costumes and emotes whichever you want by paying. (Or buy save the world and you can easily earn v bucks through quests)

PUBG - you get loot crates and open them with real money "keys" and don't get whatever you want. (Rob a bank or smuggle drugs)

This game doesn’t need to evolve. It only needs to evolve for people with ADD. This game does what it needs to and its variety comes from how things happen. Sure it needs fixes in minor things but changing it or evolving it can ruin it if they’re not careful.

Battle Royale is nothing more then a game mode; back in the day it was called Elimination. I find it amazing that a game that has one game mode and map is so popular when if any other game did this it would be penalised for it by the consumer base.

Just think if Halo came out and it was just blood gulch with capture the hill?

What PubG needs to do is sort out the glitches, produces some more maps and introduce some game mode variants like fortnight has been doing (50vs50, Snipers, 20vs20vs20vs20vs20 to name a few of Fortnight's variants).

@clay544888: it's just the scale, the way things play out and the uncertainty of danger behind every blade of grass. You just don't know wtf is going to happen. Fortnite is much more kiddie and predictable and the random building building is stupid af.

I don't think bluehole (PUBG) will stay competitive for a long time vs Epic's Fortnite.
But I doubt PUBG will ever "Fall".

"If you can't beat em, Join them!" they say...
Well I wouldn't be surprised to hear some time down the line that Epic bought Bluehole studio.
They could keep both alive and own both to have a ridiculosly high player count to counter EA. Activision and all the others!

Epic could even take advantage from both of these games experience and add stuff / game modes to their upcoming Unreal Tournament that could pretty much gather most of the players from the previous PUBG/Fortnite combo!

PUBG needs to evolve?

Has Counter-Stike evolved much through the years?

I think PUBG fans would be very loyal, like CS's.

Fortnite being free and cartoonish seems to draw a lot of kids in!

Succes shouldn't be based on the number of players alone!

Besides, if PUBG manage to be competitive to a free game which reaches for a larger audiance and is FREE, I guess that itself is quite an achievement!

My 12yo son play Fortnite and he manage to kill a lot of people.

He tried PUBG and didn't get to even touch anyone.

I looked at him play Fortnite and there's been soooooo many times where I tought :"Omg, in PUBG in such a situation he'd be SOOOOOO long dead!!"

Both games and in the same Genre but attract very different gamers.

When you say :"If Battlefield adds a Battle Royal mode, how can PUBG counter this to keep their players?"

Why would I stay in PUBG instead of switching to a AAA game Battle Royale which would be more polished with more content?

First, any EA game is 60$ and have a new release almost on a yearly basis with PAID extensions, DLC / Micro Transactions and all...

I'm not willing to shed this much on any game when there's a near-free alternative.

(I paid 30$ for PUBG and have been playing for months on end!)

So far the only thing I envy from Fortnite compared to PUBG is its fluid gameplay!

I mean, even if I have a steady 60FPS in PUBG, I feel like it's STILL not as fluid as fortnite...

PUBG feels "heavy" and that's one of the things that bugs me the most so far...

Yes, it has. Where have you been? Up until Valve introduced weapon skins (which brought the rise of betting on matches and players monetizing their inventory) CS:GO was the least popular of the three CS games. CS and CS:Source were both consistently more popular than GO.

@restatbonfire: free... but makes MILIONS on it’s not free “battle pass”....

So after the next season, millions of people will have paid about $30 for the “free” fortnite.

PUBG has no MT’s, and I bet anything Fortnite has made a boat load off MT’s.

@hrv_25: MT’s require real world money. PUBG loot crates are in game earned ONLY.

Once you pay $30 for PUBG you can’t spend any more even if you wanted to.

Fortnite has battlepass’s ($10 each) and new skins each week that are $20 each. There are thousand of kids who have spent way more than $30 of thei parents money on “free” Fortnite.

PUBG is capped at $30.

Think before you speak.

@gamer162594: desperado & gamescom invitational crates requires 2.50$ keys to open them so don’t teach me bullshit son. Secondly, Fortnite items are not based on luck u see a skin n u pay for it. No random stupidity. Lastly, I grinded $50 worth of V bucks in STW MODE in 12 hours of gameplay. I bought battle pass n other shit from it. Play both before you open your pie hole.

@hrv_25: That’s the PC version...riddled with hackers grinding to sell items. I only play Xbox, no MT’s my friend.

You paid money for STW, so in a round about way.....YOUR BATTLE PASS WASN’T FREE

I do play both. That’s why I know PUBG doesn’t have MT’s and Fortnite does.

Don’t get mad, it’s a fact a lot of people have spent more than $30 on that “free” game.

@gamer162594: don’t worry xbox will get it’s loot crates soon. Right now they are struggling to even run the game properly on Xbox. N m not saying Xbox is weak or anythng, game’s code is just shit.

And I didn’t pay for battle pass, I paid for another game that is called save the world. It’s completely separate and have it’s own story missions and crap. The v bucks i earned was just bonus. So your theory is wrong bud.

PUBG makes it easier to earn items in game. Fortnite you almost have no choice but to pay...and keep paying....season 1....season 2....season 3

@gamer162594: PUBG makes it easier??? Whaaaattt!!!??? You get a loot crate that you open and random shit speed out of it. It’s not fixed what you gonna get. Some crates need keys to open which can only be purchased with real money. I get my V bucks from save the world mode n spend on Battle Royale. I don’t buy season passes and 950 V bucks for a season pass n they return 1200 V bucks if you play and progress. Don’t come at me with half the shitty knowledge. Get educated first.

@hrv_25: "PUBG makes it easier???"

Well, they gave me (everyone actually) 30,000 battle points, and a crate is 700. So I just open one every Sunday without having to actually play the game. That's 43 free crates.

In Fortnite, the StW daily's are about 50 v-bucks each. Those can take about an hour on average to do. That's one "daily" a day, at 50 v-bucks per....and the "good" skins are 2,000 v-bucks....to I'm looking at 40 daily's to get that much.....

So a 40 day grind to get 1 skin? Or, I can do what Epic wants and BUY IT.

@gamer162594: those normal crates don’t generally give something rare. Secondly, u must be really bad at games that it takes you 1 hour to complete a daily quest. N third, there are other missions too that gives 100 v bucks each. N lastly even dedicated players are leaving because of shit updates that PUBG ROLLS OUT. Don’t try to make ur point across on shit basis. I play both games but I know what the reality is unlike you.

You don’t even play PUBG N STILL TRYNA MAKE A POINT. lol

@csward: n PUBG doesn’t even have a story mode and you simply don’t buy them. You will get plenty of those loot piñata on daily basis. We were talking battle royLe I guess? I told you guy play both of them first then talk smack. I got 4000 V- bucks just from 10-12 hours of gameplay n that’s worth $40 if you buy them directly. You can spend those in Battle Royale mode too n get whatever the shit you want without any random chance “crates”.

I think PUBG is essentially the new counter strike. As far as P.C goes PUBG is a very safe long term solution.

Console's however are in a different mindset and the quick to pick, free to play is always going to win out there.

In all honesty this article is a non issue, who really cares if you play P.C or console, who cares who plays more of any paticular game. Neither game is In any danger of going anywhere so you may as well spend your time playing whichever game you; and your friends, enjoy more.

Happy gaming, happy lives. **** the click bait ;)
