PUBG Creator Says A Sequel Is Unlikely, As It's Focused On Games-As-A-Service Model

"We're building this game as a service."

Given the enormous success of Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, developer Bluehole is of course going to continue to support the game for a while. But Playerunknown himself, Brendan Greene, said in a new interview that a sequel is not coming anytime soon.

Speaking to IGN, Greene was asked directly about the next five years of PUBG and if this will include a sequel. "Oh no," Greene responded. Instead, players can expect PUBG to take the games-a-service model, with developer Bluehole updating and refreshing it with patches over time instead of making PUBG 2.

"We're building this game as a service," Greene said. "We'll still have the boxed copy that you buy ... we still want to polish and refine. Add more maps, add more assets, and continually refine the gameplay and optimise as we go forward."

Greene clarified that PUBG will be available on Xbox One on a disc (in addition to digitally), if players want to pick it up at a physical retailer. Microsoft is publishing the Xbox One version of PUBG, and Greene said he's excited to bring the game to a console like Xbox, which he said is synonymous with gaming. The Xbox One version of PUBG will launch later this year, though a specific release date hasn't been announced yet.

This isn't to say PUBG 2 will never happen, but it's clear that it's not going to happen anytime soon. Microsoft has said the same thing about a Minecraft sequel.

GameSpot is speaking with the PUBG development team soon for our own interview. Have a question about the game you want an answer to? You can submit any question you want and we'll potentially pose it to the studio.

Ehhhh didnt they say it was to release around the XboxX as a launch game, poppy to the cock, So the X will have no exclusive support, this was the reason they said crackdown wasnt coming out this year as it wasnt needed....

@xrizz1066: aye it really is. with the way most devs are at the moment we need a new shining example of a dev that cares about the future of gaming without robing there customers.

@deathwish026 I don't think it's all devs, look at something like Uncharted, goes from strength to strenth. Always moving quality etc forward.

Ugh how about you guys take PUBG out of Early Access before we talk about a sequel. The only reason why I haven't even play PUBG is because I don't like Early Access.

PUBG 2 already. The game barely came out. What is it with the industry these days, let the game last online for 4 or 5 years. Or freaking people get bored so easy these days, need a fresh thing almost every 12 months. Geez i played Criterions Most wanted for 4 years online and people still play it haha. I think online focused games that go for 4-5 years or so is testament to their quality and quality that keeps folks playing.

@dudebropartyyo: I don't think any real gamers are wondering about the stupid things that Eddie asks devs. It's kind of like when he asks if every game ever is coming to Switch. Then when everyone's answer is "No, that would be stupid, and nobody who actually plays the game has asked for it", he can stretch all those answers into a series of clickbait articles. I think these articles would be much better if he would snap a picture of the developers' faces when he asks these things and we could see them rolling their eyes at him.

@dudebropartyyo: There's no point to a sequel since there is no story, to my knowledge.

And they could still update the current game to add more moves. A sequel would need to be superior, by far.

I don't know why people would ask if there is going to be a sequel so soon.
