PSX Skips 2018, As Sony Confirms No PlayStation Experience This Year

"We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver."

PlayStation won't be holding its annual PlayStation Experience event this year, worldwide studios head Shawn Layden has confirmed. He said that the company reached the difficult decision based on where it currently stands on several projects, and didn't want to set expectations for a high-profile media event like PSX without much to show.

"We won't have it in the States this year," Layden said on the PlayStation Blogcast. "Now that we have Spider-Man out the door, we're looking down into 2019 games like Dreams and Days Gone. But we wouldn't have enough to bring people all together in North America to have that event. We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on that. It was a hard decision, but we have determined that this year we will not hold PlayStation Experience."

Now Playing: PlayStation Experience 2018 Isn't Happening - GS News Update

This comes on the heels of a notably smaller E3 from Sony this year, which focused squarely on four games: Spider-Man, Death Stranding, The Last of Us: Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. It featured a few surprises like debut trailers for third-party games like Control and Resident Evil 2 as well. The PlayStation Experience (PSX) debuted in Europe in the early 2000s, then went dormant for years before coming to the United States in 2014. It's been held every year since until this one.

Spider-Man has been a massive success for Sony, having broken records set by God of War only months earlier. Meanwhile, Dreams looks to be an incredibly ambitious project, and Days Gone, not so much.

I think, based on what they've said here, it was a good decision to not have the show this year. It's kind of worrying to hear that there's really not that much to look forward to in the near future, but oh well. At least they're being honest.

Where's the FFVII remake?

People wept over that shit, now they weep because it probably won't be available until PS6 drops...

That event would have been our last plausible chance to see a reveal for Mortal Kombat 11.

So basically we'll have an entire 2018 gone by without single news or (official) info about MK11. Amazing (and disappointing). I suppose that since the past two years (especially this year) the market has seen a very sudden surge in fighting games, and NOT revealing anything about MK11 this year could probably be a positive after all (there's just WAY too many fighting games to care about right now).

See you in 2019 then, MK11.

@pongman75: Spiderman is incredible, it would be awesome to see it on PC.

Assuming it won't happen though since it's Sony exclusive.

So nothing new to show. After a disappointing e3 and now this it's just a tad concerning of sony's future lineup.

Ok. Because so many people are so misinformed. There is no PS5 coming next year. Sony has already said it won’t come out until at least 2021. Stop spreading your guesses around.

Got no new games to show they reasle 16 exclusives this year for ps4 half of them are ps vr. I knew won’t do one this year and PS5 be out xmas 2019. Plus dreams meant come out this year so Sony and mm are liars. What wrong Sony don’t want hurt sales of indie games for dreams or something.

@playstationzone: PS5 will not be out next year. They will release it 2020 at the very least and spread out Death Stranding, Days Gone, Dreams, Ghosts and Last of Us over a 2-3 year period.

PS5 November 2019

Sony issuing a lower than expected PS4 sales forecast for financial year 2018. This puzzled a lot of people because there was no obvious sign why and when sales would begin to flag. Rumor, ever increasing likelihood of leaks and an official invitation "to see the future" would have the desired effect.

Financial chart omitting 2019. Wall Street Journal conjecturing--with good reason--this might be negative spend in view of PS5. "The next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher." Sony openly remarking that PS4 is entering the final phase of its life cycle. Don't say they didn't warn you.

Sony unwilling to increase production of PS4 Pro to meet demand. They know PS5 is around the corner and don't want the former to entirely cannibalize the latter.

PS1 and PS2 were superseded after 6 years. PS3 only went 7 because of market downturn.

Phil Spencer pre-emptively talking about next-generation Xbox hardware. Why do that. Why undermine the console you launched only 7 months prior for no good reason whatsoever? Spencer knows something large this way comes. A further intent to raise Xbox's profile during this phase (e.g. the unexpected return of X018).

Sony have been acting conservatively for 18 months. E3 2017 was anti climatic, PSX 2017 lacked punch, and E3 2018 focused on known knowns. Sony are loading their guns.

No desire to match Xbox One price drop. What would be the point when (1) people are prepared to meet a higher asking price (2) Sony can use the extra revenue to help subsidize PS5.

There is no markedly new technology from AMD in 2020 that neither Sony or Microsoft with careful forethought cannot get from AMD in 2019. Therefore 2019 would be the perfect time to strike from a hardware point of view. If Microsoft delay, they would not be able to manufacture a significantly faster system one year after the competition without subsidizing the console to such an absurd and costly degree it would not be worth the investment. Sony can also obtain deeper component discount by being the only console manufacturer to guarantee their clients sales in excess of 100 million units.

@badboyfx86: Sony has already stated no PS5 till 2021 at best. It's genuinely concerning considering we will be hearing more XB Scarlett at the Xbox event this year. Sony's console future is really up in the air considering they bent under pressure to Cross-play and have yet to drop PS4 prices to compete with Microsoft. Microsoft, on the contrary, is catching up rapidly with the fact the XB1X proved they can make better hardware as well as the fact they ave basically announced their next generation plans 2 years ahead of time. Microsoft didn't win this generation hardware-wise but they may very well end up winning the trust of consumers back in time for the next gen.

@bigbluefluff: Oh that s were MS is making mistakes. Pro lunched earlier than X, got more shares. In console war u should always act quicker and stay cheaper (price), Sony made the mistake in 2006 by being late on launch. And now MS has X and cant offer new hardware, but Sony can do it at around 2020-21 timespan. Yes, that one year lead really counts. Good Console lunch = cheap price, lunch earlier than others, have better library. I anticipate that PS5 will be using AMD Vega (this for sure), will be at around 8-12 cores of Cpu clocked at 3.33 or 2.66 if it has 12 cores. It will have 16 gb of HBM2 ram plus 2 gb Ddr3 or 4. It will boast a sweetspot of 12-14 teraflops of Vega architecture just like it does in Pro (sweetspot (4.2 Tflops of 5.8 teraflops Rx 480) It will be priced around 400 500 $. I say it will launch late 2020 cuz these specs will be affordable until then. I think it will have 4k 60fps and 8k 30fps capabilities.

@badboyfx86: Yet you ignore the repeated statements that the PS5 is not coming anytime soon (stated within your referenced article as well), much less in 2019. It will be 2020 at the earliest, but likely not until a year after that if sales continue strong.

@dlCHIEF58: PS5 November 2019, Sony is switching to 3 year hardware refresh cycles as that’s Sony’s best strategy going forward and gives their user base 2 options, you can upgrade every 3 years or every 6 years.

I'm disappointed that they didn't include The Last of US 2, Ghost of Tsushima and Death Stranding in the quote regarding their 2019 exclusives. Have we really got to wait until at least 2020 for those games, I wonder?

I’ve been a student level subscriber at SemiAccurate since 2012, I knew about PS4 Pro before PS4 launched and as of last February I found out that PS5 is launching in 2019, but the SemiAccurate article wasn’t out until April. Sony is switching to 3 year hardware refresh cycles as that’s their best strategy going forward, and gives their user base 2 options they can upgrade every 3 years or every 6 years. PS5 will be announced next year and launch later in November. PS4 28nm November 2013, PS4 Pro 16nm November 2016 and PS5 7nm November 2019

@barcaazul: i don't think they will announce ps5 until last of us 2 and ghost of tsushima is released. it would be odd to hype up a new console before some of the best ps4 releases are out there first... early 2020 (january) ps5 announcement seems more likely to me. they have one more awesome year ahead of them and they will take full advantage of that -- days gone, dreams, ghost of tsushima, last of us 2 and perhaps even death stranding all out in 2019... never mind all the great 3rd party games they have lined up.

@dlCHIEF58: We know CD project red said cyberpunk will be on both current and next gen platforms. They wouldn't even mention next gen platforms if they were coming in 2021. Not to mention the fact they have no PS4 games to show is odd considering games usually come out far faster toward the middle and end of a console generation.
