PSP Still Getting New Games, and You Can Decide the Look of This One's UMD

How do you want it to look?

Gaijinworks is looking to make the release of upcoming PSP RPG Summon Night 5 particularly special for fans, who will be able to vote on the design of the game's UMD.

This will happen through Twitter, where Gaijinworks will tweet two possible designs at a time. You can cast your support for one or the other by retweeting the one you prefer. More designs will be shared throughout the remainder of August. Those that get the most retweets will be used for the actual game, though the company isn't saying exactly how many different versions will end up being produced.

The first two possibilities are now up on Twitter; you can see them above and retweet your favorite by going here (left) or here (right).

Plans to release Summon Night 5 in North America and Europe were first announced earlier this year. Despite the PSP market being largely dead in the west, Gaijinworks localized and released JRPG Class of Heroes 2 for PSP in 2013 (and is now bringing Class of Heroes 3 to the west). In the case of Summon Night 5, none of the previous games have ever made it out of Japan, but this game was chosen in part to how recently (2013) it was released.

Digital versions of both Summon Night 5 and Class of Heroes 3 will be released on the PlayStation Store, making them playable on PlayStation Vita. Additionally, SN5 will get a one-time-only physical release prior to the digital version coming out, and it's looking to be a good one.

In addition to a UMD copy, physical buyers will receive a game case with a multi-sided, full-color insert; a full-color manual; one of two 14" x 19" posters; a hologram; a code for the digital version; and the full soundtrack on CD with full-color inserts. This all costs $42 plus shipping, and you preorder your copy now.

Summon Night 5 is due out sometime this fall.

Don't know why they're bothering. Very few PSP owners actually paid for software when the system WAS relevant.

@Lhomity: Hm, maybe because they like their fans?

Man, that seems like a really bad business decision: develop a game around a system as old as the PSP and generally thought to be retired and superceded by the Vita...another console that struggles to get much attention. Risky for sure.

Avatar image for Elena_The_Turk

@Delston: Well, the japanese version of the game was released before the VITA. So they are just localizing it pretty much.

PSP games are still released quite regularly in Japan, mainly because the Vita was a complete failure over there.

Does DS still have games coming?

Designs of the licensed discs always suck bad for some reason. Almost always publishers put no effort whatsoever into designing it.

But this seems like a bad business idea. They wouldn't receive much profit.

Avatar image for jenovaschilld

@biggamerdude: The physical copy is for hardcore fans and collectors, they kinda know it may sale limited and if they only produce a small amount, they will all get sold and people on ebay/amazon will be trading the game for $100 of dollars later on. This will give them free publicity and more important fan loyalty down the road to the developer which can be invaluable.

@jenovaschilld: Oh. Well, what about digitally? Sony took away the marketplace for PSP.

Avatar image for jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@biggamerdude: I am almost positive as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, age and lack of support took away the market place for psp, it is after all a 10-11 year old system. And digitally is about the only market place where you can still buy games from sony for your psp.

IT would be hard to justify a brick and mortar store to stock psp console and games, when the majority of people have simply moved on.

The reason Summon Night is putting out this version is because the franchise and its games did particularly well for them on the psp, and licensing fees are cheaper then vita.

@jenovaschilld: JB hi-fi still sells pre-owned PSP games in their 'brick and mortar' stores. Some EB Games (aka gamestop) also do this.

Nevermind the many swap-em-in stores that specialize in so called 'retro' games.

@jenovaschilld: I dunno, I used the PSP marketplace quite a bit. But yeah, it's understandable to see why Sony would do such a thing.

Vita GOT NO GAME brah....

Its sad really cos Vita is sexy as hell.

It reminds me of myself in some ways.

Avatar image for sakaixx

@GregoryBastards: most of the game is released digitally. There's a lot of it actually, including this game. Don't expect AAA games tho.

this is just painful to watch.. PSP is getting more attention than Vita.

Avatar image for sakaixx

@torenojohn7: it's still coming to vita via digital download.

Avatar image for torenojohn7

@sakaixx: But its not a Vita game is it? the only place Vita is alive is Japan.

Avatar image for Elena_The_Turk

@torenojohn7: Vita bombed in japan... Hence why they still make a lot of PSP games over there, even in 2015.

Avatar image for sakaixx
sakaiXx

@torenojohn7: this game was released in japan before vita, in sense it's not even a vita game in the first place. The umd is more like a limited release and has a digital code so you can port to vita. so getting a digital download is still good. The reason behind this is that they probably testing the market before Summon Night 6 on vita and ps4 is released later this year in japan (or next). Support the game !

Avatar image for jenovaschilld

@mtm2490: There are still a good amount of games coming this fall and beyond for the vita but it is tapering off pretty quick. I am afraid handheld consoles are going to be a niche market.

by they way is that your face pic or peter deluise from 21 jump street years ago.

Haven't played a summon night game since highschool on the GBA. Time to dust off the old psp 3001,

Avatar image for Elena_The_Turk

@sdinh225: The buttons on one side of my FF7 PSP stopped working for some reason... Maybe I'll see if I can pick up a new one on the cheap. I see em online for like $20.

Avatar image for sakaixx

@sdinh225: different type of game, the main entry is a SRPG while the GBA was an action RPG so hope you like those SRPG types.

@sakaixx: Hell that's even better since I like the FFT/Advance, Tactics Ogre and Fire Emblem games.

Releasing a PSP game doesn't surprise me. Releasing it on UMD blows my mind.

Avatar image for CyberEarth

@Dragon_Nexus: You missed the part where they said the physical copy (UMD) will also include the digital copy as well. It's a limited edition thing for the fans that want it. And it's great if/when you upgrade to Vita as you can port the digital over to it.

More PSP games should have followed this model 3 years ago.

Avatar image for Dragon_Nexus
Dragon_Nexus

@CyberEarth: I did indeed miss that part. That's pretty funky =)

I suppose what holds people back from following that model is you could give a code out to someone and keep the UMD, thus halving sales (potentially). Still...woulda been nice, I agree.

Avatar image for CyberEarth
CyberEarth

@Dragon_Nexus: Yeah, you could do that, but then you lock yourself out of the digital (future) content. Most things are going digital these days.

You could resell just the UMD, but again - the entire point of buying the physical is to get the physical.

Personally, I see it as win-win. And in fact, many of the Blu-Rays I buy these days have a free digital code/download of the movie as well. This should have been the model the entire time.

@Thanatos2k: Lol amen to that I still have my copies of Popful mail, Dragon Force, Albert Oddessy Legecy of Eldiea, Magic Knight Rayearth, Shining Wisdom, Arc the Lad, Lunar SSS, and BSS, and Growlancer lol. Suffice it to say I was crushed when they went down, as there are so many more companies deserving to be in their place.

IMO short of CD projekt, they were one of the few companies that legit cared about their fans (anyone who had their old instruction booklets remember the editor notes would always end in "Were nothing without you" ). Thus I will happily support them in the hopes that one day we see some of their projects come to the current gen consoles.

Avatar image for Elena_The_Turk

@Sorugue: Guess what! Summon Night 6 is for PS4 and Vita.

Avatar image for Sorugue
Sorugue

@Elena_The_Turk: Fantastic news! The JRPG scene needs more exposure on the PS4, Gaijinworks in particular, without question they will see my investment. Its a bit ambitious, but I hope they can reach the noterity of Compile heart or NIS, not exactly the most popular among the mainstream crowd yet stable enough not to be going anywhere. Thanks for the update!

The fact that you can get both a physical version and a code for the physical version makes the physical version a no brainer. I think this is really cool kinda wish I still had my PSP and I don't even like JRPG's.
