Now Playing: PSN Name Change Feature Is Coming - GS News Update

Sony is finally allowing PlayStation Network users to change their names soon, but it appears the feature may come with a few more caveats than expected. Sony previously warned of some game and app compatibility issues in the initial announcement. According to users in the beta, though, an attached disclaimer warns that players are warned they could lose lots of information associated with their account, including DLC purchases and saved games.

The disclaimer was leaked by beta members on the ResetEra forum. It notes that not all games and applications support the online ID change feature, so players who use it may lose access to content including virtual currency, game progress like saved game data, leaderboard data, and Trophy progress. It also notes that some games might not function properly, even offline, and your prior ID could remain visible to other players in some situations. If you run into issues with the change, according to the users, you can revert back to your original username at no additional fee. But that may not resolve all of the problems.

It's difficult to tell from the disclaimer how widespread these bugs could be, or even if Sony is simply covering its bases by warning of possible complications. Still, if you've been looking forward to changing your name you may want to wait for more information on how common these problems are.

If you're in the beta, or once the feature launches in full, you can change your name once for free. After that it will be $10 USD/CAD / €9.99 / £7.99 for subsequent changes, or half those prices for PlayStation Plus members.

The preview program will last until the end of November, and then the full feature will roll out to all users in early 2019. All games published after April 1, 2018 will be compatible, and Sony will issue a full list of compatible games published before that date when the feature goes live for everyone. Once it's live, you'll make the change through the Settings menu or the Profile page. You can also choose to display your old PSN ID next to the new one so that friends will recognize you, but once you make that decision you can't change it.

I like my name. I think I will keep it.

If I change my mind, one thing I won't do is be one of those persons who rushes in to use the new facility on the first day. I'm happy for them to find all the bugs and get Sony to fix them before I jump in.

So can someone explain to me why Microsoft has had this since the early 360 days-- literal years and years ago-- but Sony has had to wait until the PS4 is middle-aged, and then it's not even something a player is going to want to do for fear of losing 90% of their associated data? I honestly don't understand this difference in available technology here.

@Flicka21: Sony learned from MS mistakes. They are only caving in now due to persistent pressure from part of the Playstation user base that for whatever reason regret their choice of user name.

Haven't figured what the big deal is about changing a name. I've had mine forever and don't care if I keep for the next 'forever'. Sigh . . .

I didn't know throngs of gamers were longing to change their names. Now I'll be awake all night trying to figure this one out.

@Duke_Slade007: I wouldn't lose any sleep over it if I were you. Over the years I've come across a few persons that have expressed the desire to change their usenames, but I couldn't say why any one of them wanted to do this. They always seemed to have relatively innocuous, often quite imaginative, names. Perhaps they were simply bored with them?

You guys have opened my eyes to a couple points I never thought of, like "not having the same name since you were 14". I'm a little put back about being accused of not having "empathy" though. I was just expressing an opinion or a view on the subject, which is what I thought this forum was about. Sorry if I stepped on any toes. It was never the plan.

Avatar image for deactivated-5be5c296ab383

@Duke_Slade007: some people dont want the same name they had when they were 14. pretty simple

Avatar image for kgsg-19-2

@Duke_Slade007: Well just because it isn't a big deal to you doesn't mean it isn't to others and that you don't mind keeping yours for forever doesn't mean others want to keep theirs for forever too. I don't want to change mine but I still understand why others might want to.

I swear, it's as if empathy has never existed or just gone out of the window.

There may be some PS3 stuff I may lose, but as far as PS4 I just have MLB The Show which was patched, so I think I'm going to go ahead with the name change.

Only Sony could make something so simple so unnecessarily complex.

Sounds like Sony needs to fire its database developers for being completely incompetent. While I can see where some game developers would have embedded your username in the saves, there's no reason whatsoever for Sony to have done the same thing with PSN purchases and trophies. Even if they had, it's not too difficult to add a UUID to everybody's account and update all of the purchase records from the username to the UUID.

@Mystakill: You beat me to it. I'm still trying to comprehend why they'd link to a string as opposed to an ID...

So Xbox you can change your name in 30 seconds with no issue, but on PlayStation you lose all your DLC? Okay how is Sony such a terrible company?

Avatar image for Fish61324
Fish61324

@galaharty56: Yup, you're right. So i guess we should all go with Xbox then?? Since, i mean, you can change your name with no problems.... because that's what is so important in gaming. I mean, it's not like the games themselves are what matters. Lets all go to Xbox because i get to change my name from Xxxx_generic_xxxX to just plain old 'generic' with no X's. Sound logic right there, kid.

Avatar image for galaharty56

@Fish61324: ah yes because that’s what I said! I remember typing out “everyone leave PlayStation and play Xbox”! Thanks for being able to read my own typing better than me! Sorry I thought my comment was more judging the companies that run the consoles rather than the consoles themselves. Thank you for clarifying my own comment for me!

i'm not sure how many of these problems are expected for the beta only? is the plan to learn from the beta and iron out the kinks or are all these issues expected for the full public release as well? it is a very poor solution if so... at the least i would have expected all ps4 games to not be affected...

Avatar image for SEADRIVE

I understand why you would/could lose content, but Sony could have done this differently from the start so this would not be an issue. I think you can change your account name on Xbox Live with no problem, or perhaps not. Regardless, I never picked a name that required a change anyway. I think most who regularly change names are those few who get kicked off networks due to poor practices and they create a new account and name every the time.

Avatar image for nintendians

sound pretty much useless to change and lose anything you have then.

@nintendians: name change is usually made when you want a new life. so makes sense you have to play all games again and purhase everything again

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: minus create a new account and feels like you got permanent banned by sony.

Yeah, I like my PSN ID, I had it this long; so long in fact I can't even remember what day I made it. I only remember it was during the life cycle of PS3. So anyway, I don't need to change a name I have had and like since the days of PS3. DarkWolfclaw is the only PSN ID I need.

Ah that sucks, don't want to loose stuff that are bought. I'm most likely going to change name, but probably best to wait.

Avatar image for lonewolf1044

if that is the case, I see no point in changing my game name if I lose games, achievements and everything else.

Avatar image for teppolundgren

When I picked my name back in 2008, I knew it was awful. I deliberately chose an awful name because it's easier than coming up with a good one. And not only that, but a really terrible name will always be awful, whereas a good name might be good for a while, until you come up with something better. If you choose a terrible name, you're not usually inclined to find an even worse one...

So even though I hate my name, I stand by my decision. It is what it is. And people know me by my awful name now. So be it.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@teppolundgren: I wonder if you make all decisions in life that way. "I know this outfit looks like shit but I thought it's better to pick a shitty one than a nice looking one of which I'll get bored eventually."

Avatar image for teppolundgren

@Atzenkiller: I will wear a shitty outfit if I'm comfortable in it, yes.

I'm an unusually unattractive man, so being vain's a waste of time for me.

I don't get the namechange deal anyway, who cares what the ID is lol? also I'd kill myself if I lost my saved games.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller
Atzenkiller

@Destructionzz: Really? Would it feel like an important part of you would be lost? Like you'd never be the same without those savegames? I'll just assume that you're not really serious, otherwise that would be really sad.

Avatar image for Destructionzz
Destructionzz

@Atzenkiller: Indeed, losing hundreds of hours of playtime invested and progress would be sad. I'd kill myself is very obviously hyperbole. If anything is "sad" it has to be that you are "sad" for how I hypothetically would feel about something- even if I was serious.

Avatar image for lonewolf1044

Avatar image for Whitescarver

Lol Puffed article for views. Changed my online id and nothing bad happened. I've done proper testing on all my purchases, lost none, checked my save data on the games I care most about, lost none. The disclaimer itself says this will only affect a very small portion of games, unlike what is said in this article.

Avatar image for lonewolf1044
lonewolf1044

@Whitescarver: It appears it may not happen to everyone but I still do like playing Russian Roulette. Maybe they will work out the problems. I have no problems keeping my name and am not hung up on name changing.

Avatar image for Whitescarver
Whitescarver

@lonewolf1044: That's the thing though, I truly believe this is a don't sue us clause for the sake of it and not a real warning. I have several friends that are in the beta with me and none of them have experienced any issue with their name changes either, nor have I found any cases online while searching for it. My guess is it'll only affect a very select few PS3 games or PSP, but beyond that I don't see there being an issue like every video game news site is fluffing it up to be.

CaptnLongDong has been my online handle for every game and system since the HL mod Team Fortress Classic came out in 1999. Option to or not, I can't bring myself to change it.

Avatar image for mentalrevolt

Jesus what's the point? It's like everything Sony does they only put 25% effort into. Having to free up 210GB for RDR2 because they still can't manage to make a decent file system, which has been an issue since ps3 era, pretty much says it all.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller
Atzenkiller

@mentalrevolt: 210gb? For what? Only the PS3 forced you to make twice as much room as you'd need to install a game. That was never an issue on PS4.

Avatar image for mentalrevolt
MentalRevolt

@Atzenkiller: Yeah it is an issue on PS4. Same file system. I can't install a 2Gb update to GTA5, because even tho I have 86Gb free, the error shows that it wants double the size of the full game, plus the 2 extra Gb. Same goes with small updates to Witcher 3 and a few other games I can't update. Looked it up and sure enough it's the same as ps3, just the file sizes are so big it's a lot more noticeable.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller
Atzenkiller

@mentalrevolt: Well, never happened to me before, ever, so there's nothing more I can say to that.
