PS5's Game Boost Improves Certain Backwards Compatible PS4 Games

Sony has shared some new details on how select backwards compatible PS4 games will be improved when played on PS5.

PS5 launches around the world next month, and while there are still some lingering questions about how it works, Sony has now shared more details about the system's backwards compatibility. As with Xbox Series X, it appears a few previous-gen games will be improved when played on PS5 thanks to Game Boost, a feature that gives some PlayStation 4 games a performance boost on the newer console.

As detailed on the PlayStation support website, Game Boost allows certain PS4 titles to "run with a higher or smoother frame rate" when played on a PS5. However, Sony notes that this will only apply to "select" games; it appears the performance boost won't be applied across the board, as Xbox Series X does with Xbox One games.

The company shed a bit more light on how the feature will work in a PlayStation Blog post. "Some titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may see higher fidelity. Additionally, PS4 games will also take advantage of some of PS5's new UX features, but more to come on that later," the company wrote.

Although we don't know the majority of the games that will be making use of Game Boost, developer Sucker Punch confirmed that Ghost of Tsushima will take advantage of the feature. The open-world action game will get a 60 frames per second option when played on PS5. You'll also experience much faster loading times on the next-gen system.

According to Sony, the "vast majority" of the PS4 library will be playable on PS5, although there are a few titles that won't be compatible with the new system. Sony has also explained how to upgrade some PS4 games to their PS5 versions, and the process sounds fairly straightforward.

However, it appears there are a few quirks when playing backwards-compatible games on PS5, particularly with relation to the Share button. Since PS5's DualSense controller replaces feature that with the new Create button, the Share menu can't be displayed when playing a PS4 game on a PS5, but you will still be able to take screenshots. A few other PS4 features also won't work on PS5, like PS4 tournaments and the PS4 Second Screen app.

Additionally, Sony warns that "some PS4 games may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior when played on PS5 consoles." Again, no specifics are provided, but it does encourage you "to see if you are happy with the play experience" of a PS4 game on PS5 before buying any DLC for it. You can read more on PlayStation's support website.

The PS5 launches on November 12 and will be available in two editions. The standard version retails for $500 USD, while the disc-free digital edition is $400 USD. Preorders have been selling out immediately, but you can learn more about where to snag yours in our PS5 preorder guide.

Uh yeah, when you upgrade the components of a PC, it runs older games better. Same with consoles.

I hope this “boosting” doesn’t just apply to games…would be really stupid if it did. Like every device I own already boosts the audio/video for the media it plays, but would be nice if I can retire 1 of those devices.

What backwards compatibility?

What a joke sony is, they had PS1 and PS2 Backwards compatibility of the PS3 but can't even put all 4 PlayStation console generations backwards compatibility on the PS5!

Big fail on Soyny's part.

@johnny0779: Xbox has had years of work with BC to get to this point. Yet, Xbox will need all those OLDER titles to make up for the lack of quality first party titles.

@psychomantisiii: It’s not that Sony is not as technologically advance as Microsoft when it comes to software.

XBOX is DirectXBOX just think of all of the years of software engineering before it came to XBOX and now Microsoft is about to release the 4th generation XBOX.

MS studios brought more games than Sony so far 2020

and by "select games" they mean when they sat down at that board meeting they said "ok, how many games can we remaster and re-release?" and so then what you have left out of those are the select games that will get a performance boost.

After the success of the PS2, Sony got cocky and forced blu-ray into the PS3 to win the format war (hd-dvd vs blu ray) then got rid of the PS2 backwards compatibility entirely for all PS3 consoles going forward (at launch you could choose between a 60gb model with ps2 backwards compatibility). The limited success of the PS3 was down to Sony's greed and previous success.

They eventually phased ps2 BC out about a year after launch.

Why shy away from such a great legacy.

IMO releasing the digital ps5 and the physical disc ps5 as a same spec machine (and you will notice the extreme intentional pre-order stock shortage of the physical disc ps5 compared to digital already) Sony's strategy looks to aim at their subscriptions and digital releases as their priority, physical discs and backwards compatibility with old ps4 discs is something that would go against their priorities you see.

Microsoft has opted to have the digital one as a cheaper, low-spec entry for more casual gamers, the game-pass reflects this then to give that machine value, but that machine is their ace in the hole to get gamepass subscribers. But Sony have all this small print going on that is making me think back to the PS3 days again. With PS4 they gained the attention of the xbox 360 gamers, that mass market appeal, leaving microsoft with their huge xbox one and kinect in the dust.

It is as if they are treating the ps4 and ps5 as two different worlds instead of a PlayStation brand as I hoped they would do, embrace their history etc. But just seems they want to move everyone onto digital as soon as possible, pay extra for remaster, use ps4 pad only for ps4 games etc, just greedy. There are millions of Sony fans who would like to play their sony games on one sony machine, but limiting them and making them pay extra will inevitably make all the xbox fans who moved to ps4 come back to microsoft again.

XBOX series may actually do well in the Far East....

@comicsausage: the games that get boost benefits are tested game by game. More will be using the feature as Time goes on. Thousands are being tested going into the release of ps5.

Blu-ray didn't win because it was on ps3. it won because it was the superior format vs hd-dvd. Ps3 was too expensive because it literally had the ps2 hardware in it so they removed it to be competitive.

Sony actually made more physical disc ps5's than digital. They will continue to produce as demanded. IMO it kind of sucks that if one is not interested in a disc console, they would have to be forced to downgrade or forced disc console for Xbox.

Most 3rd party and some 1st party games will be Cross-gen. Over 4000 ps4 games will be playable. If anything, there would be a minor case where a game is not supported that someone currently plays.

@innerlux69: I have been a keen reader of gaming news back before the Ps3 was launched, gamespot was on top form then too, greg kasavin and the others kept it all upbeat and all that and it was a huge deal back in the day when the PS3 was launched.

I own my own games store now, and have got into commenting every so often back here just because the inner me is so frustrated with Sony at the moment, customers complaining they can't get hold of the physical edition anywhere to pre-order, but managed to get a digital one.. I know I will never see them for games again with a digital only console!

People trading in their ps4 for a ps5 - not all realise they will need to trade in their pad, and be unable to play ps4 games on ps5 without it!

Xbox is so much easier as a retailer to explain, its a shame there aren't any exclusives really, but you put in a game like cyberpunk, and it will get that series x upgrade - for free. There will be probably 3 Forza games out before Gran Turismo 7 is..

This console launch certainly lacks the excitement than previous launches, and its that small print of limitations that is annoying to read. Especially considering previous launches can get it spot on, the PS4 launch was brilliant - proper nail in the coffin for xbox as well "for the players" and the emphasis on being able to play your second hand discs (as xbox was aiming for digital only at the time so they went all out against them on that!) but this gen.. seems greedy is all

I feel like this info on a Boost mode is premature if there's anything to know about these new UX features. Since UX literally stands for User Experience, it could change everything or virtually nothing.

Arrrg, Sony and their trickle approach to releasing information. It's like having your grandfather tell a story and the he falls asleep a dozen times in the middle of it.

I don't believe anything the PR department @ Sony says anymore.

Yeah i got mine preordered & paid in full but that doesn't mean i like the way SOny handled launch.

*No reason why The backwards compatable PS3 chip or emulator couldn't have been included.

But there's esp no reason why Sony couldnt' comment about it..

I would year sub to PSNOW if it had a full library but it's only about 3%-5% of said consoles lineup.

Like a greatest hits.. Which means most people wont find the game they are looking for..

***The pandemic is a great time to get older consoles and collect the physical games imo.

@sippio: Nah the cell processor in the ps3 would literally have to be welded onto the motherboard and then maybe even the output chip as well. It is a totally different architecture, different coding and everything running with proprietary api s. see here. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_microprocessor_implementations

I kinda do not blame Sony for the cell processor choice way back then. They owned part of the tech, it was their own countrymen and also Japans massive developer industry was on the defensive from some amazing WW competition. C++ and Japans C++ along with 'aurus'? the video tool set way back then was not really written in friendly Western coding. If Japan could keeps development heavily centralized for the PS brand still in Japan that would be a big win for them as well as their partners, and people just down the street. If you read the wiki, the language was just very different and different paths as well. By the end of the ps3 life cycle they ported games to that console through emulation and didn't even bother with development on that architecture.

REad Naughty Dogs "post mortem" on their games during that time for an eye opener of what it was like moving over to that processor and developing "to the metal' coding. They described it as such a wild trip, tons of excitement, but the development broke all of their margins. It was not that the cell processor was weak by any means, but more like trying to use a flame thrower to heat up toast.

The cost to go back and port over the ps3 games and test them on the ps4 or ps5 would cost a lot of money. And there just is not the demand for it, some want older games, but by far most people want new games, for a new console, for a new generation.

@jenovaschilld: To be fair, an even slightly modern system can emulate PS3 games pretty effectively now. It's kinda weird how little attention it's gotten but PS3 emulation is in a better state than PS2 emulation now. The raw horsepower of the PS5 should allow for it in software modes.

@Xylymphydyte: No no, that is completely wrong there. You can throw tons of horsepower at the cell processor but if it does not speak the language, it doesn't matter. You would be emulating entire lines of code, putting it back together, and then playing it from a virtual machine. I mean, just look at the number of games you can buy on their store. Sony would love to have more old ps3 games just to sale, but it requires human intervention, money, and time. Did i mention money!

Here is several links, and a video

LTT: "Emulation doesn't improve as the technology gets older. There are some very old computers out there that nothing can emulate properly.

Emulation's difficulty depends on how different the platform that is being emulated and the emulator platform, true. But in the end it all comes down to the fact that emulators are non-profit unofficial fan project things. Creators don't have the necessary documentation. They also have to avoid using copyrighted methods. (Emulators don't usually come with a BIOS for this reason)"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3

https://www.quora.com/Why-are-there-no-working-PS3-emulators

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvgGVF4Axjs&ab_channel=Apollyon

Also the PS2 emulation is very vibrant. It was cracked early during the 6th gen. They gave out devkits and its code was backwards engineered by some, simply because it was small and easier. Emulation on the PC started really early, you can tell just by going to any emulation site and seeing what games are out there. Lordy knows I have ran PcSX2 emu to death.

I do not know or understand why so many believe the idea that throwing more power behind emulation somehow makes it easier. You can push IBM 'big blue' at emulation but you will still need someone to verify and adjust its results, often times line by line. And there is no reason Sony would give up its source code on the cell processor, nor would it be worth the money and resource to do so.

Again it is not a software, it is a hardware issue. Your best success is if the publisher takes the game and rebuilds it from the ground up for todays modern architecture or for pc.

How is GameBoost going to work on BC? if a game never had a ps4 pro version, is just going to run like on a regular ps4 or is going to add features like on Xbox? more resolution, automatic hdr, v-sync.

Or just if a game has uncapped framerate, just hitting up the maximum?

For instance Doom was 1440p (dynamic) on PS4 Pro and 4K (dynamic) on Xbox One X.

am I going to play on PS5 at a worse resolution than a Xbox One X with no extra features?

The games that were 1080p on ps4 and never had a ps4 pro upgrade, it would be nice seeing them with 4K resolution. The PS5 has the power, but I don't know how are they handling it, and they never show ps4 games running on ps5 or let the media try them for themselves and show analysis and comparisons.

@sladakrobot: You don't need an emulator for that. Even on PC a game can run fine on one PC but not start at all on another, so issues like that always exist. And even the hardware emulation of the PS2 and 3 wasn't able to run all games without issues or at all.

It's most likely that the impact will be similar to a souped up Boost Mode, that is to say that it gives the game access to higher CPU and GPU clockspeeds but not more cores or memory, though they could be patched to support those things pretty effortlessly, and that most games won't see an impact being that they already have capped framerates they stay at the majority of the time.

For example, a game like Doom Eternal probably won't see a lot of benefit being that it runs a locked 60fps with dynamic 1440p. The resolution dips are rare and too mild to really see with the naked eye. Doom 2016, on the other hand, has some major framerate and resolution dropping on PS4 Pro and might stay locked a lot more readily.

A lot of games will be interesting to see the improvements in, such as Nioh 2 with its uncapped framerate and uncapped resolution mode, Ark Survival Evolved with its utter craptacular performance, and unexpected ones like Dead Island, Dead Island Riptide and Dying Light, all from Techland, which feature double buffered vsync meaning that under the right circumstances, their 30fps cap moves up to 60fps, and it happens from very rare time to time with PS4 Pro's Boost mode--they could conceivably be 60fps at all times. I bring up those zombie games because we have no idea how many other games might actually have double or triple buffered vsync enabled, which could lead to a lot more 60fps games than one might expect.

@Xylymphydyte: Yeah, you can't just make a game use more cores than it was developed for. Same thing with memory. Even on PC if a game was developed to only use 2 cores at most, having 4 won't help you. And on consoles every games is developed specifically for the hardware, so there's no need to make it run on different configurations.

And if a game is capped, whether it's the framerate or resolution, then the PS5 is probably not going to be able to do anything about it either. It could only run it at a more stable framerate. Not sure if variable resolutions were ever a thing on the PS4 but on the Xbox it should get rid of that issue as well, which most of the earlier games released for the Xbone seemed to have.

@Atzenkiller: I can't actually tell if you're agreeing with me or disagreeing with me. That's essentially the same information I explained with a larger negativity bias.

There's a lot of PS4 games with dynamic resolution, I mentioned two in Doom Eternal and Doom 2016, all of the Idtech games except the first two Wolfenstein releases use variable resolution and probably hundreds of others as well.

What I'd most like to see is updates to take checkerboard rendering off of games with it and allow full progressive rendering.

Edit: it just struck me that you maybe meant Variable Refresh Rate and not Resolution, in which case, no, no PS4 games support VRR and they haven't made any announcement regarding it on PS5.

This is how it has always been with Sony. PS2 did not run PS1 games flawlessly or better. The same thing happened with PS2 games on PS3. I do not know why people are complaining about backward compatibility at this point. Sony abandoned BC in 2007, and the company has not looked back since. As long as the major first party games work, then that is all that matters. People got the majority of what they wanted and expected. Who actually thought that there would be BC from PS1 to PS4 on the PS5? The only reason people are mad is just because of what Microsoft is doing. Here is the thing. Backward Compatibility has been Microsoft's main thing for the past five years. The company did not invest in software until just recently. I would rather have current generation software than BC. The Bethesda buyout will start to matter at the end of this generation, but not as of right now. Studios that are part of Bethesda are still working on games for Sony at this point. Sony worked on providing software this passed generation and are doing the same right out of the gate with the launch of PS5 with Demon's Souls, Spider Man, Astro Bot, and Sackboy's Big Adventure. You have Ratchet and Clank, Horizon 2 coming next year along with support from studios like Arkane, Ember Lab, Housemarque, Anapurna, and so forth. Sony could always implement BC later.

Microsoft has not been focusing on NEW games until super recently. Sony has been coming out with games all year long and this trend looks like it will continue into next year. Games from Microsoft will start to trickle in probably around 2023? That is why the company is not showing off what the series X can do for new games as has been focusing on old games. If I am getting a new console, then I am going to want some new games to go with it.

@laurenriley3332: Just to clarify, the ps2 console would run ps1 discs and games as well as have the ability to upscale the pixels and offer faster loading through a faster drive. with those options easily available. You could also save ps1 games on a ps2 memory card as well. Large majority of the games worked, very few didn't. Just like some of the later ps1 games would not work on some of the older ps1 consoles. Technology was moving fast at this time.

The ps3, first version, also play ps2 games and one discs as well. After the redesign, they removed the chip. The cell processor was very different architecture and heavily based in Japan's coding and toolsets and assets. Even Japan's developers bemoaned how hard it was to develop for it.

When the ps4 came out, they moved the architecture far more WW mainstream, and more towards 'to the metal' development. A great thing, but the cost to port over ps3 games was to high and there was little demand for it.

All platforms, consoles, have been dabbling in backwards compatibility, but a few consoles stand out as outliers- mainly due to technology and or interface problems. Which, when stats have been done, only a small of % of consumer purchase a new console to play old games on them. Microsoft, nintendo, sega, playstation, all have done backwards compatibility and done it pretty well. But yes MS has focused a lot on BC, 8th gen, simply because they had no first party games. And you got to sell em something.

--

Oh also, it is not that MS has not been focusing on "new games", it is because during the late 7th gen Mattrick and Balmer decided that console gaming was gonna die and be replaced by social media games, and or mobile. With only fans like motion control and guitar or dance games remaining. They unceremoniously sold off all of their third party developer ,contracts, and broke ties with many publishers and even threw indies under the bus. IT was not until mid 8th gen that MS stopped the bleeding and started quietly building back its stable of devs/pubs/studios. MS first party games will trickle out next year, but slowly, as much of what was burned down cannot be built overnight. Like Nintendo, MS is sitting on gobs of cash compared to Sony, even though Sony has outperformed other consoles since it came out 25yrs ago.

@jenovaschilld: PS2 did run every PS1 game better. Some games benefitted. Other did not. Most games ran as they did on PS1.

I hate that people think that companies have all of this money in a safe that their just sitting on for no reason. No company sits on money. It invests the money/ People have saying "Sony does not have the money the other two companies and will eventually go down." People have been saying for fourteen years, and yet it has not happened.

All I am saying is that people are being stupid when it comes to comparing Sony and Microsoft. Sony does not need an answer for everything Microsoft is doing. This is not Super NES versus Genesis. This generation, each company is doing its own thing. Microsoft is going the games as service root. Nintendo will continue to dominate the handheld market, and Sony will continue to dominate the single player market. The Bethesda buyout will not bear fruit until about half way through this next generation. Arkane and Tango Gameworks are still working on titles that have PS5 exclusivity for one year. Id most likely will not come out with another Doom game for another four years, and Machinehead Games will not come out with the next Wolfenstein game for another three years if they decide to continue the franchise.

Microsoft also invested in Gamestop so it can convert America's most popular gaming store into a Microsoft store shove gamepass down people's throats. Microsoft is not sitting on money at all. It lost two out of the last 3 generations, and the generation where Microsoft "won" cost them a good bit a money with the red ring of death as well as throwing support behind the HD DVD add on.

Microsoft said "screw this console race crap, let's get more service oriented." The endeavors that Microsoft embarked on are going to take a full generation or more to bear fruit that is sustaining.

All my point was is that people have to look at the bigger picture. Everyone knew Sony was not going to give consumers backwards compatibility for four systems AND add enhancements for every game. Sony focused on putting out quality games for a year and looks to be continuing the trend next year as well. No one else has had a lineup with games such Dreams, Final Fantasy Remake, Ni Oh 2, The Last of Us Part 2, MLB: The Show, and Ghost of Tsushima. I am not saying that everyone is into those games, but the games are high quality to a lot of people. If I were Sony at this point, I would buy Bluepoint and Housemarque as well as invest in creating a JRPG studio with people who worked on the titles created by Level 5. I would keep the timed exclusivity with Activision and strike up deals with Namco, Capcom, Atlus, and Square. If I had to cut some things out, I would cut Team Ico because that studio is a money hole, and Claphanz. As much I personally love Hot Shots Golf, that series has never been that popular from a worldwide standpoint.

Sony should double down more on single player titles and Japanese titles. The company tried multiplayer with MAG, SOCOM, Warhawk, Starhawk, and Fat Princess. The results lukewarm at best.

Console Wars are over. All three companies are doing different things.

@laurenriley3332: Great post, good read.

I really, really hope the console wars are only heating up and not over. The bloodier the better, as it greatly benefits the gaming consumers to have tons of competition and innovation. It also holds down costs, and increases quality. I mean, if I was MS, I would red wedding the other two as soon as they penetrated 10million consoles. It is not about whether you win or lose a generation, it is how you are setup for the next. Did xbox lose 6th gen.... not at all. For a unknown name to jump into the market, and only losing a few billion doing it was monumental. You can ask phillips, atari, sega, neo geo, apple, google if this this is hard or not. Xbox 360- an amazing success, even though it was 3rd in most consoles sold behind PS and nin. MS has ton of cash from non gaming, that they can borrow to itself with little problems related to interests or taxes. And they should and must use it if they want to gain ground in the gaming industry a 100's of billions of dollar industry that just keeps growing.

--------------------------------------

Nintendo is different, here is what happened with them. They did amazing 3,4, gen the man CEO retired and the chairmen and women of the corporation started buying up the ancillary facilities that make Nintendo games and hardware. That is why they didn't go to CD-rom because a corporate member owned the taiwanese factory that made cartridges. This was a poor short term investment, that has paid off well for them over the next few decades. Everything that Nintendo does, basically goes back into the hands of the corporation and to an extent the hands of a few. They do not care if the company Nin gets giant again as long is it is very profitable to the board members and Nin. Why Nintendo is literally sitting on 13 billions of dollars in cash. https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/2020/05/08/world-weathers-pandemic-nintendo-may-just-be-recession-proof/ All while not selling a lot of consoles or software compared to PS Sony. If your a Nin ceo vs a PS ceo - I would much rather be Nin. And they have no incentive to spend any of it. Why?? That shit earns compounding interests and corporate taxes are nothing around the world right now. A tax haven for the mega rich is to get on the board of anything, and enjoy that sweet sweet tax free life. So Nintendo is playing a low risk long game. They could care less if internet fan boys consider the switch a good product as long as your buying it.

------------------------------------------

OF the 3 Sony is in the most precarious state. For years the main corporation has bled cash off the gaming division to fund its failing - financial investment side, its hospital equipment side, its terrible tv, phones, movie, tablets, you name it. Your video game dollars have went into so many terrible Bravia TVs, you have no idea. Which is a shame because Sony Playstation makes a great product, great games, and great services- but they are investing everything they got back into it, to keep that ship a going. The CEOs of Sony have always had a love hate relation ship with playstation, and they are vocal about it. Calling it the childrens section, the toys division. PS is easily the most successful division Sony has ever had but Sony would love to be back in Tokyo in the post war era making industrial electronics, manufacturing electronics, consumer manufacturing. Rubbing elbows with statesmen, instead of Geoff Keighly at comic con. One truly terrible generation, (worse then 7th gen) might be enough to fold PS forever.

---------

Going ahead I see PC as the big loser, if gaming catches on to subscription based and cloud based 'services'. Why bother the expensive porting of games to wildly varied PC environment, when it would be so much easier and cheaper to port to a gaming blade in a server. Then all you would need is a monitor and fast connection. Right now of us PC gamers see is terrible console ports to PC and almost no 'truly' PC game built from the ground up to take advantage of the time, money, knowledge that is pc gaming. -----

Still 9th gen looks bright, so much going on. So much competition and big moves by not only the 3 main players but also tons of services with just about everyone looking to get in on the game. -Are all 3 doing something different... yes and no.

@jenovaschilld: I do not know what the future will hold after this generation is done. This next generation coming up will be just as long if not longer than all the other generations before it. Covid will be partially responsible. Graphics have reached their peak. Games will continue to look better, but they had their time in the sun already. I want to see how the SSD will change level design in games. This is why I am excited for the new Ratchet and Clank and also why I prefer PlayStation over Xbox. Sony seems to be pushing the next generation more while Microsoft is allowing its games to be accessed by more people. I will be 45 years old by the time this new generation ends and have been gaming since I was 5. The pinnacle of gaming has already come. Gaming has become like movies where, it never changes drastically that much anymore. It is just a form of entertainment that continues to exist. Movies went from some parts that had motion, then some movies had sound. Eventually all movies had sound, and some movies were in color. Then all movies were in color and some had special effects. Most movies have some kind of special effect these days and that has been where the technology has stopped. The way we consume movies has changed, but movies have not changed since the 80s and 90s.

Gaming has reached its pinnacle, and now it will be a continuous form of entertainment. Will there be a game that reaches the uncanny valley? Maybe, but those will be a very rare sight. If it is taking 2,000 to make The Last of Us Part 2, then how many people does it take to create a good game with uncanny valley graphics? Probably a lot more. This is why Microsoft is focusing on putting its games everywhere instead of show off what the SSD can do for NEW titles. Gaming has reached its highest point, and it is more or less a straight line from here.

@laurenriley3332: Wow, I have never met someone so young, and so engulfed in anhedonia or Southparks memberberries. As we get older, as we gather experiences, and have been introduced to more and more ..... stuff... it all just seems to be more of the same. Which it is really. My boss, traveled the world for his work at Kodak, visited so many countries and the most beautiful sites and monuments. He is now 71 and I asked him does he ever want to visit any new place he has not been. And he said, "no, at one point they just all seemed to be the same and nothing really as good as the first time I started to travel." Maybe having been introduced to so many games during your youth has jaded you to the new things that are coming at us all the time.

I am more positive then negative. For a kid who thought, "I think I might be different, because I am sure.... Nightrider sucks, but everyone else seems to like it". I am amazed at the new tv shows and streaming services and the amazing stories that are told from around the globe. Same with movies, who knew reading comics back in the 80's that 40yrs later it would be X-men movies that would suck and not the Avengers. That the terrible shallow 80s music would be replaced by terribly shallow 90s, 20, 10s 20s music also. Though Billy Joel is still killing it and amazing artists like Alicia Keys, Ed Sheran, Greta Van Fleet, Billie Eilish would be making awesome original music on their own ways, and on their own terms.

Same with video games, I remember Baldurs gate on pc and thought - nothing could ever beat this. And then over these recent years we have had this amazing RPG renaissance that replaced the old and boring FPS and bro games fad of the 6th and 7th gen. Crazy great games like Divinity, Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland, Persona 5, Dragonquest 11, FF7 remake, SRPGS, JRPGs, WRPGs, CRPGs and even more mouse click adventures. A new Flight simulator that requires the highest specs to play. Games that explore our sexual identity, morality, and our ability to keep from throwing up while exploring a VR world. And graphics have gotten better, not contained to the 2d world, or even 3d world anymore. From 75 ohms prongs to 480i, 480p, 720, 1080, 2k , 4k, to 8k now. From cartridges we blow on hoping to get it to boot, to even teens building their own gaming PCs, and consoles with storage better then PC. It is a great time to be a gamer.

Just the shear amount of games is unfathomable to me. I remember when a console would launch with 2 games and near a dozen after 1 year. Now a platform like ps4 that had over 160 playable games for their console after a year. I remember me and Jason could play every single RPG there was that came out for any console or PC, and pine away working at Krogers and reading EGM, waiting for that next fix. Now the shear number of games is over whelming. No longer a it's "on-my-to-game list" but now a gonna have to weed out so many games just to fit it in my 'probably never get to play it' list. Oh... the first world problems. And so many new ways to consume them. On your phone, at work, social media, digital, streaming, cloud, steam...... I mean will we ever be able to take a shit again without a screen in our face... I think not!

We are old now, and while the average age of 'gamers' keeps getting older and our purchase power stronger... publishers could care less about our tastes then the Fortnite, LoL, twitch-able, stream-able games that are out now. There are still amazing games like Bioshock, and Kentucky Route Zero but there will be several wall sliding, mindless, playground games. Games are getting better everyday, with better sound, graphics, physics, and AI !!! but it may not be what 'we' greybushes were hoping for. I remember punching a friend in the arm, to look at foot prints left after walking over a puddle in a Breath of Fire game or when playable characters in Phantasy Star ask each other if they were going to be okay. Nothing would get better then this. Now many years later I am hunting and being hunted by mechanical monsters in Horizon zero Dawn.

Who cares how many people it takes to make a game, (which includes developers and then the many different studios that touch the game, not traditional people that come in day to day from start to finish), that just means more jobs, more chances for innovation. We still have old school productions of smaller more intimate groups making so many games on steam no one could hope to play them all or, lol crowd fund them all. https://kotaku.com/suikoden-developers-get-the-band-back-together-for-new-1844497532 If that doesn't make your inner child scream, then I would worry that clinic depression is at work. And really, prices have barely moved for the last 20yrs. nor has the entry fee as $500 consoles !?!?! Please I was paying that for 4th and 5th gen consoles. Remember the panasonic 3do? I mean we have controllers we can touch, wave around, listen to, and buttons that get harder to press!! If that takes an army to make a game, then bring on a console war.

GAmes are getting better all the time, but we have also seen some shit to. Do not worry, when you boot up that game, just remember we are 'electronic video game consumers' who are paying for a diversion that will fill in the void until your wife gets done watching some mindless reality tv Atlanta house wives or something. Thank you, THANK YOU VIDEO GAMES for all of the countless hours of reality TV we didn't have to watch. I mean we could have a drinking problem, fly fishing, rebuilding old cars, learning how to fly a plane, having affairs or secret second families! ... which my wife and family much prefers me only wasting $60 on a video game. Instead of collecting Time Life World At War books or singing bass on a wall that cost way more.

Games are following a very similar path of the movie industry. From silent, black and white, color, 3d, costumed Godzilla, claymation Godzilla, cgi Godzilla, back to 3d, and now young Joe Pesci - NO!!! Whatever leaps in gaming their is when viewed by those who have seen each and every single one become less and less amazed at each new one. Will we be like my grandfather who watches old black and white westerns he has seen dozens of times or be brave like my grandmother and watch Tangled with 3D glasses, while trying to touch stuff in the air at the TV. I grabbed FF7 -remake fearing the worse, that they were going to ruin it, but it was great- it was soo good. After putting in 76 hrs in on that game, well worth the cost by far. Games do not cure cancer, do feed the hungry, they are just something to pass the time. Take em off the pedestal and decide ... is that purchase worth it, and you will start to enjoy games so much more.

I am worried riley that you may be feeling depressed and that games will not be able to introduce anything new and wondrous to our lives like they once did..... I have the cure here.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/310080/Hatoful_Boyfriend/ Enjoy.

i dont see how any of the games should have problems. both the ps4 and ps5 use x86 architecture so really you should just be able to put in a ps4 disc or download a game that is attached to your account and play it without any issue. thats exactly how microsoft's back compat works on series X when running xbox one games. the 360 and OG xbox games are different because those consoles didnt use x86 architecture so they have to make emulators for those consoles to get back compat working. but xbox one and ps4 games running on series x and ps5 shouldnt be an issue. since sony are even admitting that some games will have issues seems to suggest that they have done some arse backward way of doing backward compat as compared to how microsoft has done it. once again just another example of sony trying to re invent the wheel when it doesn't need to be re invented.

@xnshd: There is only so much emulation can do. At some point you need a team to go in (usually a games publisher) because they own the IP, even if co-owned the publisher would normally do this. And tweak the game here and there, and also review for QA. IT is an expensive process and there is only so much a "platform" can do.

What they are doing now is running a ps4 emulator on the ps5, and compared to the dozen games that cannot run on the system with the massive library they have created 8th gen. Not bad at all. And MS does the same thing., but since MS was lacking in first party games 8th gen they really put backwards compatibility front and center, something the ps4 to ps3 just could not do. Still statistics show that only a small percentage of people buy a new console to play .... old games on it.

@jenovaschilld: thats funny because microsoft isn't doing an emulator of the xbox one on series X they just run normally no emulation required so honestly im surprised that ps5 is emulating ps4 because it shouldn't really need to do that since they are on the same architecture.

@xnshd: I mean that is what I have read as of early this month, and of course this may still be a moving target. Also I also thought xbox ten series was also doing a form of emulation. While PS will be doing like xbox a form of native and emulation.

IT is a bit technical, https://www.tweaktown.com/news/75224/99-of-ps4-games-will-be-playable-on-playstation-5-at-launch/index.html#:~:text=Sony%20is%20making%20huge%20progress,of%20PS4%20games%20are%20playable.&text=Back%20in%20March%2C%20Sony%20claimed,of%20the%20PS4's%20games%20library.

But basically:

The PlayStation 5 has three GPU modes, and two of them are for native backwards compatibility support. The PS5 will downscale its built-in 10.3 Navi RDNA 2.0 GPU to emulate a PS4 or PS4 Pro's GPU to play older games that aren't optimized.

Again I would take this with a grain of salt until we not only have a breakdown but actual performance reviews by someone like gamernexus, as Sony so far has not held a press release with anything at all concrete in this regards, and much of the internet is filled with 'informed speculation'. May need to scroll up on the link.

Main article https://www.tweaktown.com/news/75224/99-of-ps4-games-will-be-playable-on-playstation-5-at-launch/index.html

Also this seems promising, if sadly only cloud based. see here https://www.inverse.com/gaming/ps5-patent-backward-compatibility-sony

For past games, digitally. Still since nothing has come out by now.... only time will tell.

"it appears the performance boost on PS5 won't be applied across the board, as Xbox Series X does with Xbox One games."

And another shortcoming courtesy of Sony......wasn't enough knowing the PSVR won't be working with the new camera? 🤦‍♂️
