PS5 Preorder Info: Consoles Still Sold Out, PS5 Accessories And Games Available

PlayStation 5 preorders sold out extremely fast when they went live without notice. Here's where you can keep up with availability.

Sony finally revealed some of the most crucial details about the PlayStation 5 recently, including the price and release date for the next-generation console. Launching November 12 at $500 for the standard console and $400 for the digital edition, the PS5 went up for preorder right after the recent PS5 event, and since then, stock has sold out at all major retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, GameStop, and Target.

GameStop had a second wave of PS5 preorders available to preorder on September 25, both online and in stores. Once again, the retailer had a virtual queue. Multiple GameSpot staff members waited in the queue for more than an hour without any success, so online preorders apparently sold out very quickly once again. GameStop issued an update on Twitter confirming that PS5 stock sold out once again. This included a starter bundle that came with Demon's Souls, Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate edition, PS Plus, an extra controller for $770.

We're tracking console availability below, and further down, you'll find links for where to buy the official PS5 accessories and the biggest PS5 games.

Quick look: Where to preorder a PS5

As of our last update, PS5 preorders are sold out at all major retailers.

Which retailers will charge you upfront?

You should know that retailers handle preorders differently when it comes to charging your credit card or PayPal. Amazon doesn't charge your card until the product ships, while GameStop waits until five days before shipment. Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and Sam's Club will place an authorization hold on your credit card. Though your card won't actually be charged until the PS5 ships, it's possible you'll see a pending charge that will disappear and then come back until release. These authorization holds can affect your available credit.

PS5 accessories in stock:

The Pulse 3D wireless headset is the first PS5 accessory to sell out at all major retailers, and the media remote and DualSense charging station are proving popular as well--both are currently only available at PlayStation Direct. Check out where you can snag all the PS5 accessories currently in stock below, and don't wait too long if you're considering buying--we expect it'll all sell out eventually.

PS5 games up for preorder:

Quite a few PS5 games are up for preorder now, including launch titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon's Souls. Check out some of the biggest PS5 games available to preorder below. Keep in mind that many PS4 games come with free next-gen upgrades and are currently discounted, making them the better deal.

OUT OF STOCK:

PS5 console preorders have sold out at all major retailers. Sony has offered an apology for the chaotic PS5 preorder situation and said more will be available in the next few days. There will also be more chances to get one through the remainder of the year.

See more PS5 preorder pages: PlayStation Direct | Amazon | Best Buy | GameStop | Walmart | Target

Invite-only PS5 preorders at PlayStation Direct

The surprise PS5 preorder date comes weeks after Sony opened preorder registration on its own website, saying it would be offering preorder reservations on a first-come, first-served basis from "existing customers." According to the PS5 preorder FAQ page, the selection would be "based on previous interests and PlayStation activities," and those who register would know if they're selected if they are contacted by email. Registration has now been closed, and those who were contacted were able to preorder a PS5 via PlayStation Direct starting September 18.

GameStop payment plans and trade-ins

GameStop is also offering a few different payment plans for the console, which include using a GameStop Credit Card or a "rent-to-own" payment plan. You can also trade in your old consoles for varying amounts of credit and apply that toward a new console. You can visit GameStop's trade-in page to find out how much your console is worth in trade-in value.

PS5 games, backward-compatibility, and more

The PS5 can stand upright or lay on its side.
The PS5 can stand upright or lay on its side.

The PS5 is just a few months away, and things look much clearer than they did a week ago. In addition to launch games like Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon's Souls, the PS5 will be compatible with a large number of PS4 games through backward compatibility. It's still not clear what the full compatibility list is, but thanks to the announcement of the Plus Collection, we know a bit more. An added benefit for PlayStation Plus, the Plus Collection gives all subscribers access to some of the PS4's best games, including God of War, Bloodborne, and Monster Hunter: World. These games will be the PS4 versions and haven't been confirmed to receive any kind of enhancements.

As far as a complete list goes, however, it's still unclear. The reason for incompatibility was explained by system architect Mark Cerny, who said, "The boost is truly massive this time around and some game code just can't handle it." This means every PS4 game has to be tested to ensure its compatibility.

Other games the PlayStation 5 will see at launch include Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Destruction All Stars, and Astro's Playroom. PS5 owners will also be able to expect a number of other games in the coming months and years, including Horizon Forbidden West, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart as well as third-party titles like Resident Evil 8: Village and Hitman III. During the recent PS5 showcase event, Sony also revealed a new God of War and Final Fantasy XVI, both of which will arrive on PS5 next year.

The PS5's specs are old news at this point, but it's safe to say we saw some exciting uses of the custom 825GB SSD during the PS5 event. Fast load times in Demon's Souls were the big highlight, though the custom SSD will also ensure fast open-world streaming and faster install times.

Additionally, the console supports ray tracing, 3D audio, and PlayStation VR as well as 4K UHD Blu-ray discs thanks to its compatible disc drive--of course, the PS5's Digital edition won't support physical discs. Sony has stated the PS5 is powerful enough to support 4K resolution at a 120Hz refresh rate and 8K resolution content, the latter of which likely won't be used widely in games for a while. This is all powered by HDMI 2.1 technology, which not all games support. However, any HD or 4K TV you have at home will still be able to display and run your PS5 and its games.

Perhaps the most notable feature of the PS5 is its DualSense controller, which promises to deliver a more immersive gaming experience than the DualShock 4. The DualSense intends to do that with new haptic feedback technology as well as adaptive triggers that developers can program to function in different ways. Some developers have explained how they're using the DualSense's unique features--Deathloop director Dinga Bakaba said they block the triggers if your gun jams.

As for last-gen and third-party accessories, not everything will work with the PS5. The DualShock 4 will work with PS4 games, but you'll need a DualSense if you want to play anything specific to the PS5. See the full list of official PS5 accessories and their prices, including international pricing.

Here’s your guide for preordering a PS5: Forget the thing even exists… find something else to distract yourself with and don’t waste a moment of your time or stress over this shit. Wait, and then wait some more.

I just read that multiple retail stores (best buy, target, ect. ect.) are starting to cancel ps5 pre-orders. They apparently sold more pre-orders than what is available.

My great point people can debate with me..In that video gamers are complaining that video game software SSD,harddrive space not Including the updates of the video games are too high and Isn't enough for around let's say even 30 games and gamers don't want to buy 5tb harddrive SSD's that they need to play, download more games onto their PS5,Xbox series x and Is the same as buying 1 high end video gaming PC or computer, that cost thousands of dollars even though are worth It though to spend thousands. And video games themselves are In the gigabytes haha and with 1 high end video gaming computer loyal customers have to buy more TB harddrives space,SSD space and yeah and that Includes exclusive games too that are only found on Xbox series X and the new God of war game..Is only on the Playstation 5, and many video gamers still buy and play and collect physical media DVD,Blu-ray games..video gamers choice, and games that are only on PC gaming, gamers choice..however If choosing 1 high end expensive computer video gaming machine or PC video gaming machine or custom built PC gaming machine..gamers still would also need more TB's thus spending more on SSD's,harddrives space. Is one reason there's X cloud gaming, google streaming stadia. And finally gamers buying and playing and collecting digital games a nice sales pitch Is video games only found on digital games format, perhaps In the future many video games will only be available on digital games format.

Why release at all when there’s going to be shortage. This marketing sales tactic is getting old. Ever since Nintendo mini started the tactic every business been using it.

As of right now, there are 2 danish online stores taking preorders, with no word on the stores being "overbooked", like other danish stores say.

I "think" I just got one from Target. We'll see if I get an email cancelling it. But if you wanna feel like a loser keep refreshing the PS5 page. Rarely the preorder button comes up and if you go really quickly you might get through. I did this a number of times and I always got caught up in adding to cart or paying for it. But today they accepted payment and I got verification sent to my email.

I thought getting a ps5 after several hours during the 1st pre order wave was tough but damn was it no where near as tough as getting an rtx 3080. It released the same day and I still can't find one. What a terrible launch by Nvidia!

I have a PS5 preordered for this generation. I’m wondering how long before we will get 3rd party controller support? I really dislike the joysticks position, because it really cramps my hand and thumbs. Literally no controller has this joystick 🕹 position besides PlayStation. At least, that I’m aware of. I see the PS4 has some amazing controllers by 3rd party. Does anyone know if a company is working on controllers for the PS5 this early on?

Well, I’ll never buy a console at release again knowing full well that both MS and Sony are planning multiple upgrades and redesigns throughout the gen. Year 3 is probably the sweet spot to buy into a console generation, where the hardware has probably matured significantly and there’s actually a decent library of games to play by then.

@jsprunk: I mean, if you have plenty of games to get you through 3 years without playing any new games, then more power to you. The thing about waiting for upgrades though, is that you will always be waiting. Not that long ago we got PS4 Pro and Xbox one X, and now we are moving to the next gen. You can play every game on the basic PS4, and even the super under-powered OG Xbox one, so, waiting isn’t really worth it. If you are frustrated with the process of getting a new console, Im with you there. They need to do something different and make sure we can all easily pre-order a console if we want one.

Don't be a chump and buy this stuff off ebay. Yeah, I could afford it easily, but I would never do so because it just incentivizes scalpers, who are little better than vultures.

It's coming out that Gamestop employees are the ones reserving PS5s and XBs for themselves and scalping them on eBay. That explains a lot.

Listen to Camelot on youtube. He has communications from Gamestop employees that indicate the store managers are snatching them up for resell, or saving the reserves for their personal friends, (I know for a fact that the 2nd situation is happening).

Ick. ☹

I got one here in Canada after standing in line for 1.5 hours, but I almost didnt get one because they only had 20 allocated in the EB games I went to, I wouldnt have even got it today if it wasnt for 5 guys who were in front of me in line that left prematurely, also they only had the DISC based version for sale, not the all digital.

I failed to secure a pre-order the first time due to retailers being way too hasty.

Now after staying up all night, I failed again, because I was focusing my efforts on the Digital Edition on both Walmart and EB Games (Canada) but they had no plans to even restock those (it wasn't clear on twitter).

After 5 minutes of refreshing a completely useless page (and refreshing for hours before that just in case it started early again), I moved on to the Physical Edition which was still in stock due to the site being slowed to a crawl from all the traffic. After over an hour of dreadful lag, multiple errors and failed checkouts, my order felt like it had finally gone through... but it hadn't. It was out of stock.

So my last resort was to try to get a Physical Edition bundled with two controllers. It was like 300+ dollars more than the Digital Edition, but I tried to get it for fun anyway cause I was so done I thought to myself it was that or nothing. But... you can guess the outcome. Out of stock during checkout.

After all that, though, I'm looking at my fat stack of cash and I'm kinda glad I didn't get a PS5.

Demon's Souls isn't worth a grand, man. No game is worth that much money. Plus I still don't want to support paid online... or $70 games, for that matter. Maybe that's the pushback I needed to realize I don't really wanna play Demon's Souls that badly.

There's also too much we don't know about these consoles still. Is the SSD as fast as they make it out to be? Does it truly eliminate loading times entirely in all games? Are all PS5 games going to run in 4K 60fps minimum, or is it less than that? Does the console have any problems? Is the controller comfy to hold? Is the UI annoying to navigate? Do games still have paid DLC and MTX despite costing $70?

I bet I'm gonna end up skipping another console generation and just game on PC... but I dunno man. Even PC has issues, with things like Epic keeping games hostage on the Fortnite Store, or rampant hackers in multiplayer games. Or overall terrible communities compared to 15 years ago. Not to mention, it feels like the only multiplayer games people care about are the ones that get the most epic reactions on Twitch, so multiplayer games feel basically dead.

Nintendo's got its own share of problems, the Switch had a pretty good run early on but nothing good came out for it this entire year... you can't even trust their hardware quality anymore, and most of their best games have become pretty vapid and are generally lesser versions of older classics.

There are some exceptions, but overall... the current gaming industry gets a big ol' meh from me.

@notjm: Is that so? Well, if they restock the Digital Edition before launch, I might still try to get it. My failed attempts made me realize that I can justify the price of the Digital Edition, but the other one, not so much.

@Tiwill44: From my experience today, sony seems to be pushing the more expensive disc based one, when I went to preorder today that's the only one that was up for sale, all just to make more money i bet.....its ok because i actually wanted the disc based one since I always trade in games.

@systemoverload: I agree, but if you go on Amazon, Sony charges $60 - $100 for their PC Blu-ray drives. I’m not surprised they’re charging an extra hundo for a custom built Blu-ray drive that fits inside of a console.

I been thinking about what is better, the online pre-order process now or the old brick and mortar way.

Back when the PS3 came out with such a limited number of consoles on release day, I slept outside of my local target for 2 nights waiting in line. There were another 10+ people with me even though the store manager had come out several times to tell us they only had 7 consoles at that store. But people hung around because if a payment method failed for any reason and the person could not pay for it at the moment, the console would go to the next person in line that could pay for it. People would join through the day and night and leave after they found out their chances were slim to none. But at least they knew. They didn't have to wait thinking they were in line to get one just to be surprised when they got to the front and be told they were sold out.

Now with mostly digital sales and pre-orders, it the process is still not better. Sure, people don't have to wait outside of a store for several days, but it is still frustrating to try and get one online. With people waiting in line you knew what your chances were. With online, you have no idea. You could be refreshing a page for hours and still no get one, or be on the online queue thinking you might get one just be allowed into the website when they are all sold out. Maybe this is more frustrating due to the uncertainty.

Thanks to twitter I was able to see that the PS5 pre-orders had gone live and somehow I got lucky at Target. But I can see how it is frustrating to try to get one and not be able to get one due to sites crashing or bots swooping in and taking them from actual gamers. I don't know what the answer is other than SONY and Microsoft making sure there is plenty of inventory when they announce the pre-orders will go live.

These were sold out again, within a couple minutes. This isn’t the Xbox Series X, where you have several hours to grab one, or in my friend’s case, two.

@pcps4xb: thats not what i heard. i heard sony was having trouble with manufacturing and was limiting the amount that would be available from launch to the end of the year. i did hear one thing that gamestop was getting more consoles for ps5 than xbox but thats one outlet. overall i have heard sony was struggling to manufacture and was lowering their targeting amount yet microsoft was having no such issue.

might have something to do with microsoft apparently has been ready to launch for a while since the rumour was that MS was going to launch in august before Covid hit so that would mean they would have been in production from early this year. probably why i haven't heard the same story about limiting stock and possibly why it took a bit longer to sell out of series X and why series S is still available even now. also might be why the media already has real retail series X's on hand to test.

i find it hard to believe that just nobody is buying a series S when its only £250/$300 (less than a switch) and is capable of 60-120fps at 1440p. its a steal at that price and i see it appealing to alot of casual gamers who don't really care about what platform they play on they just what something that is the cheapest so they can play fifa/madden/cod/fortnite every year.

They had a bundle up just a few minutes ago for like 750 and even though I was able to add it to my cart, it was then not available. Seconds later I checked eBay and a handful of them were up for 1200 dollars. I honestly hate people who make a business out of this

Gamestop put me in line when I went to the website....to an already sold out preorder for PS5. That was fun.

No I am not going click and wait refresh, click and wait hoping to buy a video game console again. I will most play my old video games instead and when there is an ample supple of PS5/ XBOX series X will buy...

So GameStop has more was the retailer holding out? Another shipment?

This new game GameStop is playing with PS5 preorders will not save GameStop.
