Everything You Need To Know About The PS5

The PS5 is out now. Here's everything you need to know about your new console and how to set it up.

Sony's PlayStation 5 is out now in many major markets, having released on November 12. There are two versions of the PS5 available to purchase--the high-end PS5 standard edition and the disc-less PS5 Digital. It's been hard enough for many to secure a preorder for any of the next-gen consoles, but keeping up with the barrage of information is an entirely new game. Between technical specs, backwards compatibility, storage questions and concerns, launch game lineup and exclusives, peripherals like the new DualSense controller and other accessories, there's a lot to keep up with--not to mention some of the pressing day-one troubleshooting questions. In this guide, we've gathered up everything you need to know about your new PS5 as well as some of the most popular questions and answers, to help you get your next-gen console up and running.

What Is PS5?

The PS5, or PlayStation 5, is part of the ninth generation of video game consoles, which includes the Nintendo Switch and Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S. It follows the PS4. Our review of the PS5 praises it as a big and bold next-gen machine.

Now Playing: PS5 Launch Date, Price, & Games - Everything You Need To Know In Under 3 Minutes

When Does PS5 Come Out?

The PS5's release date is November 12, 2020 in many markets, including North America, Japan, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. It'll expand to other regions on November 19.

How Much Does PS5 Cost?

The base PS5 costs $500 while the disc-less Digital edition costs $400.

Where Can I Buy PS5?

If you're looking to buy a PS5 on launch day, consult our order guide below for a full list of which retailers will have the PS5 available to order day one.

What's The Difference Between PS5 And PS5 Digital?

The key difference between the base PS5 and its digital edition is its disc drive. The high-end or default PS5 costs $500 and comes with a disc drive while the $400 digital version does not have a disc drive, meaning it can only install and play games via digital download. Picking between the two comes down to a few things, not just the convenience of using a disc or not. You should also consider whether or not you can afford or want to rely solely on the internet to play your games and how you feel about not technically "owning" the games physically.

There are a few other differences to be aware of as well. The base PS5 is larger and heavier than the digital PS5, but not by much. Head down to the section on technical specs for a more detailed breakdown.

What To Do Before Getting A PS5

If you're moving on from the PS4 to the PS5, there are a few things you should consider doing before setting up your PS5. If you have a PS4, that includes figuring out new storage solutions, double-checking login credentials, and backing up your game saves. You should also make sure to order any necessary adapters and clear out space to make way for your new console. Check out the guide below for more.

Can PS5 Play PS4 Games?

About 99% of PS4 games work on PS5, according to Sony, but PS3, PS2, and PS1 games are unfortunately excluded from its backwards compatibility. Some PS4 games will even receive next-gen upgrades via Game Boost, allowing them to take advantage of the new system's improved hardware. A special PS5 Plus Collection benefit will also be available to PS+ subscribers, granting them access to a number of the PS4's best games, including God of War, Bloodborne, and Persona 5.

How To Transfer Games From PS4 To PS5

The PS5 is backwards compatible with about 99% of PS4 games, according to Sony. If you need help transferring data from your PS4 to PS5, including games and save data, check out our guide below. We'll walk you through how to complete the process via external drives, plain old discs, or using one of the console's digital and cloud-based options.

How Much Storage Does PS5 Have?

  • 825GB (total)
  • 667GB (available)

The PS5 comes with a custom 825GB NVMe SSD, but if you account for the operating system and other default files and updates, you'll have about 667GB of storage left for games.

What Are The PS5's Technical Hardware Specs?

Consult the table below for a breakdown on the technical specs of both versions of the PS5, including the high-end standard edition and its digital-only counterpart.

PS5 Standard/Base Edition and Digital Edition Hardware Specs

What PS5 Accessories Are There?

Alongside the launch of the PS5 are several new peripherals and accessories, including the brand-new DualSense controller. Find a list of the available accessories and check out our PS5 order guide for a list of where to order them.

  • DualSense Wireless Controller
  • DualSense Charging Station
  • Pulse 3D Wireless Headset
  • HD Camera
  • Media Remote

What's So Special About The DualSense Controller?

The PS5's new controller is the DualSense, and it's required to play any PS5 games. It retains some of the DualShock 4's innovations, such as the touchpad, lightbar, and built-in speakers, but it introduces a number of new features. Those include an integrated mic (which is on by default), haptic feedback, and adaptive triggers. Haptic feedback allows for a more nuanced style of vibration that can more accurately reflect the in-game action. Adaptive triggers allow the triggers to also provide feedback, such as providing tension when drawing the string on a bow. When used effectively, it can be quite impressive, as you can read about below.

Do PS4 Controllers Work On PS5?

Yes, PS4 controllers work on PS5, but they can't be used to play PS5 games. A PS4 controller can navigate the system's menus and play backwards-compatible PS4 games, but you'll need the DualSense controller in order to play anything designed for PS5.

Does PS5 Come With Any Free Games?

Yes, all PS5 systems come with one free game pre-loaded: Astro's Playroom. While a standalone (albeit somewhat short) game in its own right, Astro's Playroom also serves as a demonstration of what the DualSense controller is capable of. Astro's Playroom can be removed from the system's internal SSD to free up space and can be re-downloaded for free.

backwards compatability is a huge deal for me..

But Sony wants to PSnow block it on PS4.

And PS3 killed the BC quick fast.

This isn't a company that leaves money on the table..

@sippio: You're in the minority though. Just like with Xbox, if they do backwards compatibility there will be an initial spike, and then most people will stop using it.

This whole article should be talking about nothing else but the SSD, cuz that's all Sony has been talking about before the specs were even unveiled.

PlayStation 5: Launch games. "We don't yet know many confirmed games coming to PS5."

Why include this in the headline if there isn't any news to report? That's odd.

@durantftw: I just thought it was weird to write an article with something in the headline and then say you don't know anything about it. If it isn't mentioned, I'll assume it's because they don't know.

Glad the list is out, looking forward to picking mine up.

They also go on to say this comes with a "power cord" that plugs into an "outlet" which allows you to "light" the unit up

Sony is a big enough company to be able to manufacture enough consoles for the demand, oddly enough Sony was able to over manufacture PSTV so many so Sony was giving them away with every PS4 sale.

Sony seems to make a lot of bad decisions.

No games announced but you can play 100 PS4 games.

The real question is, will the PS5 fan be as loud as 747?

Regarding Graphics resolution:

I'll try make this as non-technical as possible. It should be expected that almost all Titles in the PS4 to PS5 crossover era should be easily made compatible with BOTH systems in native resolutions.

I read an interview with the Ubisoft guys about 10yrs ago where they mentioned working on their own in-house game engine. One of the features of this engine would allow them to develop a game for ANY resolution without a massive reprogramming effort. Realizing the rising popularity of cell phone games, handheld gaming devices as well as increasing resolution of TVs and immersive platforms such as PS3/XB/PC, occurring at that time, a SINGLE developer interface would accommodate them ALL. (Maybe they should have called it the Sauron engine 😂)

Their plan, was to develop in the highest resolutions and color palletes practical and then just inform the interface of the resolution and pallette available on a given system and have it automatically scale the app or game to those specifications...Done... EZPZ.

Being that we are 10 yrs removed from that article, my assumption would be that they are already able to develop 8K content ONE TIME, and have their interface easily scale it down to PS4 architecture. Surely, they would have been able to develop this panacea within 10 yrs. Most likely, other developers have similarly equipped their game engines.

Therefore, making games cross-compatible between PS4 and PS5 should be a simple matter once the developers start to develop in, for instance, 8k resolutions.

The PS5 chipset is just an evolution of the PS4 chipset with more raw horsepower, it is NOT a completely new chipset.

(The PS3 Cell Processor required a completely different set of chipset instructions making ports much more difficult.)

Regarding COMPATIBILITY:

I am somewhat dismayed that some of the commenters here seem to have not even read the article (or maybe they just read an earlier version of the article with less information.)

As far as backwards compatibility, it seems clearly stated that Sony is looking at PS4 backwards compatibility ONLY. I cannot fathom where those theorizing about PS3 compatibility are getting this impression.

Sony has implemented PSNOW to provide you with backward compatibility for classic games FOR A FEE. Why would they even consider offering PS3 compatibility?

In addition, Sony made a failed gamble with PS3 architecture to try to deliver cutting edge graphics ahead of the curve. Unfortunately, it's custom chipset didn't payoff well for Sony, Developers or Consumers. This makes it extremely difficult to port games to the PS4 and PS5 platform.

Since Sony has settled into the cycle of engineering around primarily cutting edge, yet mainstream chipsets, it is much more difficult to provide compatibility with outside architectures like PS3.

However, this makes it much easier for developers to leverage their expensive efforts in development and make their games available on both XB and PS platforms.

I see this as a big win for the consumer. I would much rather SACRIFICE the 8% graphics intensity increase from some totally custom chipsets but be able to play almost all games on XB/PS platforms.

These platforms can still be competitive based on things like their UI, online experience, their available features (ie, haptic feedback vs vibro) and their overall respect for the customer experience (which MS seems to lack).

I stopped choosing platforms for Exclusives when MS decided to REQUIRE an internet connection to even play your first game on your XB. At that time I fully committed exclusively to PS platform. So my opinion on chipsets is a bit self-serving.

they been so quiet that it looks like they scare of something. Maybe the other console is more powerful than us? Just saying nothing else. Also all the talk has been around so far about games for the new xbox but what about the new PS5. Nothing has been announce, they have shown nothing and haven't announce anything for their new console. They have a lot of franchises but nothing so far it almost feel like we gonna have a PS5 with no first party games.

They act like an SSD is something special or new. That's all I ever used in my PS4 Pro. I already ordered a 1 TB Samsung 860 Evo with my PS4. So I don't know what it's like gaming on a HDD for console. But if it's anything like PC? No thank you

Yo you guys have gone from a credible online gaming source that puts out informative articles, to a site that focuses on click bait and spoiler filled headlines. This is why I can barely come here anymore. If anyone there actually loves games and has a passion for entertainment, you should be ashamed of how your site operates now. Remember when you guys used to treat us like human beings?

The inclusion of 4K UHD, and the backward compatibility (if it plays PS3, I can finally get a decent Project Diva game back again), at least answers my big nagging non-gamer PS4 question about PS5: Ie. "So, why exactly ARE we getting this one again, besides the thrill of having the Next One announced?" The lack of UHD was one of the reasons I held off on the PS4 as "pointless" until the eleventh hour of the PS3 being retired.

Also, if they're keeping PSVR, that means that 3D capability has to remain on the system, and I don't have to throw out my Blu3D disks. That's why us casual gamers buy Playstation, for the next-generation disc/media players: I'm not giving up my old 3DTV screen yet, but if I have to get a 4K someday, at least I'll have the hardware.

@JustPlainLucas:

They just have to copy Microsoft again with BC don’t they?

Wait wasn’t it a sony exec that said hardly anyone plays back compat titles?? Now they are busting there balls (and probably their bank account) to have it implemented in ps5. Hypocrites much? I’ll be very surprised if it’s back compat with ps3.

X1 and XseX are already doing this with all previous generations.

Come on sony pull the finger out and get it done already. Xbox has been doing this for years now.

Actually, it was MS who copied Sony, as Sony did it first with the PS2, then with the PS3. If Sony implements full 100 percent BC - which no Xbox does - with previous generations on the PS5, they won't be copying MS, only resuming what they initially started.

LOL. Bro, I have a 2TB internal and an 8 TB WD External. They're both full and I gotta delete games still from my 8TB external every month or so to make room for more. I get a lot of keys emailed to me for reviews so I understand where I stand compared to the average gamer. However, I have peeps on my friends list that have 6-12TB in total also and they run into the same issue (and they quite simply just buy A LOT of games), lol. No matter how much storage you have it'll ALWAYS just depend on how many games you buy and wanna keep on ur system to be able to boot right up and play. I see ur point, but since the PS5 is gonna have an SSD, don't count on storage being cheap. If anything, I think storage will still be a problem people are bound to bitch about. I honestly hope that we can still attach external NON-SSD drives to the PS5 but I got a hunch Sony won't let it happen, at least at launch. And, I wouldn't be surprised if the rumored external SSD carts made by Sony specifically for the PS5 might turn into a reality. That way, they'll make even more $$$ selling "PS5-hardware specific" SSD drives for more storage. Generics and other companies are sure to follow suit, but this is a heavy rumor that some or maybe even Sony discounted, but I got a feeling that Sony will give us some kind of option(s) for more storage where it won't be breaking the bank. Then again. maybe not (SSDs are A LOT cheaper nowadays than in the prime PS4 era). Good point though. Time will tell, but no matter what- peeps will bitch (esp in the social media-crazed, "recreational outraged," cancel-culture base that we live in).

Oh god they are pumping this same old tired ass article out each month or week, it seems until the 9th gen console actually do come out.

Of course, none of the above means shit! Hardware and even architecture could, would, and should change upto first quarter of next year. I would say by E3 of next year -late June - is when we will have dead set specs and ideas of what the 9th gen systems will be like. Because you have to start lining up hardware purchases for such a huge electronics launch before then.

And of course even console options and features are subject to change. Anyone not remember the xbox one right after the baffling 2012 E3, and the many (though not enough) back peddling they did. Also the ps2, wii, gamecube, sega saturn, sega genesis, nintendo- also made small to large changes throughout the same year of its launch.

This is an article best saved for every few months at the most.

Backwards compatibility is an excellent feature on many levels. Thieves and burglars will now have the option and incentive to leave your PS4 behind and only take the PS5. That's great.

Regarding the games published after the release of the PS5 I think that the right strategy would be that they come out for both consoles (PS4 and PS5), at least for a while (about 2 to 3 years).

@hjroman: Oh yeah, with 100+ million ps4 out there, any publisher will be sure to have 8th gen version for a long while, At least until enough 9 th gen consoles are out, that making a AAA game for 9th gen would be worth it.

Of course this may be disappointing for gamers. Games will just not look 9th gen for a long while to allow for porting down as they say. Games that are truly built for and towards the 'metal' of the hardware and architecture to take advantage of the newer gen console will also be harder to 'down' port them to 8th gen. Especially ones that use heavy amounts of architecture, or AI.

Also the ability of the 9th gen consoles to 'upgrade' 8 th gen games will also be limited. Maybe a few more frames here and there, nice shades, but unless the developer spend the time, money, and skill in providing 4k+ assets playing games on 8th gen consoles or 9th gen consoles will look, well .. there will not be that big of a difference for a while after.

@gamerbum: Yes, GamerBum is very right here. Since most all games are made towards the SONY Playstation console's architecture and then ported sideways and often down to the xbox, 9th gen games will probably look even worse on the xbox console, unless they are that rare unicorn known as a xbox exclusive.

100+ million consoles, xbox est around 50million - you go into a 9th gen with all new hardware and architecture including gpu/and gpu memory- and you are a gaming publisher. AND you have to make a 9th gen game, that can also be ported 'down', which means you cannot add in any game breaking engineering or ai that the 8th gen games cannot handle. And you want to make it multiplatform so ....

First you make it towards the ps4, 100+ million consoles, while making it look good on the ps5, then port it to the xbox scarlet, and finally down to the xbox one. Will anyone even consider tweaking the game for the xbox one X, (probably not). So yeah any 9th gen game, like GamerBum said will probably have a rough time when it is finally ported down to the 8th gen xbox.

@jenovaschilld: Dunno but the devs right now tend to use the power resources which the XbX offers resulting in either higher fps, higher resolution or in few cases both, even it is far away from the sales of a standard PS4.

My guess is,if the XBSX performs better than the PS5(if!) and it is easy enough to utilize, they will go that extra mile.

IMO, the major differences between both consoles will be down to the way how they handle the raytracing.

@sladakrobot:

I have no favorite in console wars, for the last 40 yrs of gaming. I only like games. But on that, it does not matter what console plays it better - it will always be about money: -Who pays them to design the game as an exclusive, - whoever has the largest install base / largest potential consumer. They will never go an extra mile if it is not paid for, because that money could then go towards making a new game.

But. MS is splurging a ton of money on new IPs or new games, which will do them very well come ninth gen. I just hope another Scalebound doesn't plague MS, much of the fault lies with Mattrick there, still if they are not an in house studio/developer the over sight is much harder.

Don't get ahead of one self in regards to raytracing, there in lies the problem with the chicken and the egg. YES, ray tracing will be a new standard in gaming and really make lighting and positional audio amazing. But, you are talking years away, much like VR and cloud. There also lies the problem with introducing ray-tracing into your games. If you do it minimally, the effects will be less pronounced and will it then be worth the expense. If you add it in heavily, that will make it much harder to down port the game to 8th gen consoles, losing out on 180 million potential 8th gen consumers. Just like advanced architecture, AI, vast open worlds, all of which need tons of crunching power and specific coding to the metal to make it work. It can be done, but at an expense of so high you could almost make two different games.

Your a publisher making a new 9th gen game, you give a studio a ton of money. This AAA game needs the largest pool of consumers possible. So a mix of 9th gen and 8th gen consoles. If you code certain features it will make it impossible or too costly to down port. If your game implements ray tracing heavily, what will it look like without it.? Will optimizing it on 8 th gen consoles be worth it? But the only thing that matters, that has every mattered is the games. And so will it be 9th gen.

"the PS5 will be released holiday 2020 and yes they are calling it the PS5"

no shit sherlock. is anyone surprised that the company that created the PS1-PS4 is calling their new system the PS5? if you are a PlayStation or xbox player, it doesn't matter. the one thing we all want is more storage space on these systems. I will admit I play xbox more than PlayStation and I currently am playing on the biggest system original storage system on either console with my xbox slim s version having a 2TB hard drive when all others currently have a 1TB max.
