Now Playing: PS4 And PS5 Cross-Gen Multiplayer And Backwards Compatibility Teased - GS News Update

News of the next PlayStation console gets more enticing the more we hear about it. This time, in talking about backward compatibility--a key feature absent from the PS4--Sony says it's looking to bridge the gap between the PS4 and the PS5. That could possibly mean that owners of each system are able to play certain PlayStation 4 titles online together through cross-play that spans console generations.

As part of a recent investors meeting (where the PS5's impressive load times were showcased), Sony discussed both backwards compatibility and the prospect of PS4 and PS5 players being able to play certain games together. "Backwards compatibility, in a networked era, becomes something that is incredibly powerful," newly appointed Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO and president Jim Ryan said (via GamesRadar). "Because the gaming community is somewhat tribal in its nature, backwards compatibility gives us the opportunity to migrate that community from PlayStation 4 to next-gen using the ability to play the PS4 games they have on their next-generation console. We think it's incredibly important."

As for cross-platform multiplayer between the two consoles, SIE deputy president John Kodera noted: "Cross-generation the community can enjoy the games together." Given the vagueness of the quote, it remains to be seen exactly how this will function.

Sony wants you to buy a PS5, sure, but the company seems to be taking steps to ensure the PS5 isn't just another PlayStation console. Instead, Sony's assuring that at least some of your PS4 games will play without a hitch and that you'll be able to play with your friends who have yet to upgrade, all while supplying faster load times.

There have been numerous rumors circulating since Sony first unveiled details about the PS5. There's no word on a release date, but if former SIE boss John Kodera's "three years away" quote from 2018 is to be believed, we may not see the next-gen PlayStation console until 2021. As of right now, though, we do know the PS5 will use solid-state drives and will support PSVR. As far as price goes, Sony's lead architect Mark Cerny told Wired writer Peter Rubin that the PS5 will have an "appealing" price point: "I believe that we will be able to release it at an SRP [suggested retail price] that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set."

Wasn't long ago that Sony considered backwards compatibility a waste of time and something that nobody wanted, now it's suddenly very important again.

I will Only buy it, if they allow us to play PS1 to PS4 games. Or else i'll just stick with my PS4. I don't want to use PS Now, and don't want to spend money again for remasters or games i already own.

Avatar image for jadephoenix13

How is this not a given? I realize that we don't know details about how PS4 emulation will work yet, but it seems likely that it would be more work to remove cross-play than to allow it...

Ahahahahaah, Sony Fanboys have to buy all their PS1-PS3 over & over again on the new consoles. Luckily I now have hundreds of titles to play on my XB1x, cuz I never sold any of my XB360 & XB OG games. I keep my PS4 for single player games only & never go play any multiplayer games on it, works out great! I have one economical system with tons of games & another console with only a very few single player games, which get boring fast.

@just1mohr: It will be funny when Microsoft decides not to do backwards compatibility for their next system.

I prefer to play new games. Not games from the original Xbox twenty years ago.

Avatar image for Shantmaster_K

@neurogia: MS already confirmed that they are keeping BC and keeping the Xbox generations a "family".

Avatar image for just1mohr

@neurogia: If they do that, I will not buy next gen until a few years later when the consoles become cheaper, and instead invest in a few more used XB1X's.

@just1mohr: Id say you sound like a MS fanboy. Be a gamer and appreciate what all decent consoles offer. I own just about every console and still play games on their original console. Your choice isn't everyone's choice. Gamers unite, not tear down. Just my opinion

That being said, I'm sure a lot of us would love to see PS5 run psx- ps4 games. Will they do that? We don't know just yet.

Avatar image for just1mohr

@imajinn: Well, I started off going PS4 route after MS's DRM nonsense and despised them. It was two things that made me come back, backwards compatibility & they finally listed digital game sales frequently. I own all the consoles, except for the Switch. Heck, I own 2x PS4's, XB1, & XB1x, cuz I love games, and I still love Sony games. But truth be told, my PS4 is collecting dust and the single player games get boring for me fast. I am pulled to the multiplayer games on my XB1x with my buds, and it is too hard to break away from that fun.

Avatar image for imajinn

@just1mohr: Okay I can totally understand that. About the only thing I jam on the X nowadays is BC games. I hope that will change to playing all around games on it.

@just1mohr: pace yourself homey. You got 2 years of this.

Might wanna work on your reading comprehension while you wait.

PS4 launches: "Backwards compatibility is not that important to us or our userbase which is why we didn't attempt it"

Translated: Why waste our money creating backwards compatibility when we could charge people for a monthly subscription in order to play games which they own?"

PS5 announcement: "Backwards compatibility is really important to us and our user base."

Translation: PS Now has failed and we need a gimmick to ensure we get a good number of sales for next gen.

The fact that backwards compatibility is pretty much a given due to the X86 architecture of the CPU in PS5 smacks of Sony trying too hard at PR already. Gamers know about hardware and features and will make their judgement without all of this bumpf and it feels like Sony are realising that they now have to make amends for all of the lack of functionality and consumer support they gave us during PS4's lifespan. They realise that this gen is ending and I smell fear coming from the Sony camp now that the possibility of an end to the PS supremacy is nigh.

Avatar image for just1mohr

@gotrekfabian: If Sony wants to keep their customers, they better provide backwards compatibility for all their systems on one console PS1-PS4 & the PSP & PS Vita to be played on PS5 as well. Otherwise the only company that can provide this much back catalogue of games is from the Lord Sith Spencer, this is why I migrated to the dark side & love my XB1x. I still love Sony for the few single player exclusive games that I rarely play on my dusty PS4. So I just looked at XBox's backwards compatibility & there are now 583 backwards compatible XBOG & XB360 games alone, along with all the many XB1 games. Meanwhile Sony purposely took games off the market, like MotorStorm, KillZone, Air Conflicts titles, Alien Rage, & others & only provide them now on PSNow, sounds like anti-consumer masterminds at work. Sony wants to charge you up the wazoo for your legacy games!!!

Avatar image for shadowwarrior4

@just1mohr: they already tried and failed with that on ps3 thats why it cost 699.99 when it first launched

Avatar image for just1mohr

@just1mohr: OMG, it is worst than I thought, Sony has gone all evil on their customer base. A lot of these games they only now have on PSNow & will not let you buy them on the PS4 store. XBox is giving us games each month with backwards compatibility & Sony is literally taking them away from their loyal fans, this is sickening.

@just1mohr: Those games were never on the PS4 store because they're PS3 games. Nothing was taken away.

Avatar image for just1mohr

@pixel_mage: They took many of those games off the PS3 market. The fact that it is on PSNow is my point exactly, that they don't want to put it on the PS4 market. They could have just brought it to the PS4 & given it for free to those that already bought it for the PS3, but no they want to corner you to PSNow if you want to play those games specifically on the new gen. Evil if you ask me & please do not give into such anti-consumer practices. And if streaming is the future of gaming, I am out. I will just play my old consoles and I already collected a ton of games and I will just emulate the earlier gens too, nobody will get my gaming money anymore!

Avatar image for pixel_mage

@just1mohr: I'm not going to check every single game on that list, but PS3 didn't start making full retail games available digitally until well into the gen, so most older games were never on the store. A few that I did check are still there. Also, they can't just "bring" any of those games to the PS4. The PS4 doesn't have the physical ability to play any of those games natively. They would have to be reworked by the developers to be able to function on the PS4; it's not as simple as you seem to think it is. Short of putting a physical PS3 inside of a PS4, streaming is the only way it can play PS3 games. I have no interest in streaming either, but please get your facts straight before throwing around words like "evil".

Avatar image for just1mohr

@pixel_mage: Well, take a look at most of those games in the title & you will notice that you cannot buy them as physical copies or digital copies on the PS4, yet you can play them on the PS4 the only way the evils want you to, via PSNow. So they don't want you to own them anymore, but pay to play them indefinitely! See the evil?

Avatar image for pixel_mage

@just1mohr: If you can't comprehend literally anything I said, there's nothing more I can do for you. Take care, you'll need it.

Avatar image for just1mohr

@pixel_mage: And if you cannot comprehend that you can jailbrake ur PS4 and play emulated PS3 & PS2 games then I dunno what to tell ya. It can natively emulate both systems, as it has enough power & that is how they port over the games via emulation!

Check out "How to Install PS2 Games on a Jailbroken PS4!"

Avatar image for pixel_mage

@just1mohr: That's the first time you've said anything about the PS2. I agree that the PS4 should be able to natively play PS1 and PS2 games. Using words like "evil" is still incredibly childish, and has nothing to do with PSNow anyway. The handful of PS2 games on PSNow actually can be played natively on PS4 (yes, you'd have to buy them), and there are no PS1 games on the service. You're still wrong about PS3 though. Even high end PCs can't properly emulate the PS3 because of its complex architecture. There's no way in hell a PS4 could. Even a PS5 probably couldn't without using actual PS3 hardware. Anyway, this is an old article now and I doubt anyone is still reading any of these comments.

Avatar image for gotrekfabian

@just1mohr: With the extra power of the PS5 this is certainly a possibility but I'd be willing to bet that they still do t provide us with the ability to play our PS3 games as this would require Sony to create an emulator.

I couldn't warrant buying an XB1 due to the lack of exclusives and this is the first generation which I haven't owned and Xbox but I do admire MS for their stance on backwards compatibility and, as you probably guessed from my initial comment, I hate PS Now and won't even considered the 7 day trial. It's a sham and a disgrace making people pay for games which they already own.

Avatar image for just1mohr

@gotrekfabian: People already jailbrake their PS4's and regularly emulate both PS2 & PS3 games, check it and videos like it. "What Can You Do With a Jailbroken PS4?"

Just goes to show how big a difference a change in leadership makes. Shame Sony couldn't have just been honest about BC during the last gen though instead of doing everything they could to downplay it.
