PS5 Controller Swaps Rumble For Haptic Feedback, Features Adaptive Triggers

Just don't call the PlayStation 5 controller a DualShock 5.

Update: After months and months of fan speculation and rumors, Sony finally revealed the PlayStation DualSense, the brand new controller for the PS5. Unlike previous DualShock controllers, the DualSense boasts a brand new form factor and new features, including a built-in mic and a mysterious new Create button in place of the old Share button. It also comes with a rechargeable battery.

Now Playing: PS5 Release Window & New Controller Announced - GS News Update

Following the first information shared about its next-generation console earlier this year, Sony has now officially announced the PlayStation 5 and confirmed it will be released by holiday 2020. As part of the rollout of new details, the company began explaining some of the PS5's new hardware features, beginning with its controller, which is--at least at this stage--not yet called the DualShock 5, as you might expect.

In a blog post, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan detailed two key features making their debut on the new controller. The first is haptics instead of rumble, which Ryan says gives a "broader range of feedback." You'll feel different sensations from taking a tackle in Madden or running through a field, for example.

The second key new PS5 controller feature is adaptive triggers on L2/R2, which allows developers to customize the triggers' resistance. Not to be confused with the trigger lock featured on something like the Xbox Elite controller, which reduce the amount the trigger needs to be pulled, this would instead allow a game to vary how difficult the trigger itself is to use. Ryan cites the example that you could feel the resistance of pulling back a bow string.

Ryan said that the haptics and adaptive triggers together "can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions," and developers are already getting kits to start tinkering with the new tools.

Despite the new details, there's one piece of information we don't know yet: the name. In an interview with Wired, hardware architect Mark Cerny noted that the controller "doesn't have a name yet." History would suggest that it will be called the DualShock 5, but for the time being Sony isn't committing to that name. When Sony first started talking about the PS5, the company said it didn't have an official name yet either.

Both X1 and PS4 controllers are great, any improvements are welcomed. I’m excited to see the release titles for both and how great they will look and play

I’d like to see split controllers for both the next Xbox and PlayStation. Like the switch, but thicker like the existing controllers. Holding my hands in the same position for long gaming sessions makes my wrists start to hurt, plus then you could potentially use the same controllers for regular and VR gaming.

"Holiday 2020"?

Which "holiday"? New Year's Day? Easter? Independence Day? Canada Day? Thanksgiving? Ramadamadingdong?

If it's Christmas, just say Christmas.

That's cool I guess. Just keep the motion control nonsense to a minimum.

Will be interesting to see if sony go with the offset thumb stick layout like the superior Xbox controller this time round.

The sony employee who was tasked with designing the DS4 Toshi Aoki I think his name is said that they tried the offset thumb sticks but rather than go with a more ergonomic and comfortable layout they chose to go with the more traditional layout because it looked more like a ps controller that way.

Yes that’s right they went for a more traditional sony ds layout than the more ergonomic and comfortable offset layout like the Xbox and switch pro.

I read it in an article and couldn’t believe it at the time.

It was a venturebeat piece if I remember right.

@gamerbum: I prefer offset thumb sticks - where look and move are on different planes. It is also more intuitive as this was researched decades ago when PC controllers were were being developed. Kinda like - rubbing your belly with one hand while tapping your head with the other.

The ps4 controller is very well done and improves already over the amazing evolution of the gaming pad.

I just wish third party controllers didn't have to pay licenses like pre 7th gen. It helped control costs, and offered alot of much needed competition.

@gamerbum: I didn't know its more comfortable to keep body parts offset. I thought it's more natural to keep thumbs similar but i guess I was wrong.

@gamerbum: They will surely not ruin the controller with that dumb Xbox layout. Maybe they will make a third party supported controller with that layout so a few Xbox enthusiasts can have their way, but that's about it.

@gamerbum: Xbox controller has the worst placement, and PS controller is the most natural. When you grip a controller with two hands your thumbs natural placement is the PS controller position.

Sony's problem was making the top of the analog stick convex for so long. Now it's perfect.

@gamerbum: That would be amazing but I highly doubt it. They're too prideful and changing the layout would somewhat be admitting that they think Micro's controller is better-designed, which they'd never want to do.

Yes that’s exactly why they didn’t go with the offset layout. And they actually admitted it.

Flabbergasted.

@gamerbum: I really hope they change it or make 2 different ones. I'm fed up with having no games to play on xbox. I have a PS4 and still haven't played many of the exclusives that I'd like to but I just can't bring myself to suffer through the pain that comes with the ds4 controller.

@gamerbum:

That's just your opinion, though. I think the symmetrical sticks are far more comfortable than the asymmetrical sticks on the Xbox controllers. I personally really hope they don't change it.

It just depends on what you're used to.

Do get to have more LED lights on my controller that directed at my face??? and highly annoying in dark room? I do so love that I even love having to us electrical tape to block the light!! better have option to disable them stupid led lights on the controller.

Would be nice if controller had plug and play support on windows instead of needing 3rd party drivers and software

@redx555:

Why?

I have yet to play a game over the past couple of console gens where I said to myself, "I wish I had more buttons".

^ Let's not forget that the D-Pad, or holding down one of the top ones (sometimes) gives you more options.

Bottom Line - This isn't Atari, or NES, or SG where you only had 1-3 buttons, and the past couple of gens have gotten it right... JMO

Interesting that after trying to get rid of the rumble feature completely with the PS3 to replace it with the, to this day still useless motion sensor, now they're actually working on improving it further and making it a vital part of the PS5's controller again.

@nintendians: I'd just like it to have replaceable batteries. One of the main reasons the Xbox One controller is better than the DualShock 4 is that, when the batteries get low, I just swap the two AAs in it with two on the charger and keep going.

I would prefer a long-ass wire. In case the battery goes low you just play wired for a bit.

@livedreamplay: Like I said, it's way faster for me to just swap batteries, and then I don't have to deal with a wire either. So I hope the DualShock 5 runs on replaceable batteries.

@nintendians: My PS3 controller barely holds three hours of charge now. You lose a great deal over time.

AA or AAA batteries are a horrible choice though.

@nintendians: I've got pretty good at swapping batteries in my Xbox One controller. I'll bet I can get up, swap the AAs on the charger with the ones in the controller, and get reconnected in less than 30 seconds. The real bonus though is not having to fish out a long USB cable and plug my controller in. Years of using wireless controllers has made going back to charging cable seem intolerable. : p

@nintendians: You spend more than 40 hours straight playing games without ever putting down the controller to charge it? You gotta at least eat something every once in a while, don't you? Or do you do everything without ever leaving the room to not waste any precious time?

@Atzenkiller: no, i do eat, drink, use the restroom and sleep.

i probably play at lease 7 hrs., that at lease like half of the ps4 controller's battery life for me.

but total overall, it doesn't last a half day or so.

@nintendians: And you don't connect it to recharge after you're done playing? I'm not sure how a battery lasting 14 hours straight, according to your estimates, could not be long enough for you. If you just forget to plug the cable in once you're done playing, then you'd forget to do so even if the battery lasted for a few hundred hours.

@nintendians: It used to be the case with older batteries. But either way, it doesn't matter. And if you don't recharge your controller's battery after you're done playing, then complaining about it not lasting for days on end is pretty dumb. No controller is supposed to last that long and there's no reason for it either.

@Atzenkiller: then the older batteries seem more reliable if the new ones crap out quick. it is, but gamers expect to last longer then the previous gen. or close to it. well a short ones will take you out of the action if it dies in the middle of the game.

@nintendians: You're just making stuff up. The batteries in the first version of the PS4 controllers were pretty bad from what I heard, only lasting a few hours. But that hasn't been an issue for a long time now as Sony apparently decided to put better batteries in. But none of that has any relevance for you because, unlike what your initial post suggested, you're not playing games for 24 hours straight. You're just either too lazy or misguided and so choose to not recharge your controller until the battery's run out. And in that case it would always be inconvenient. Even if the battery lasted 200 hours it would eventually run out in the middle of a gaming session. And you could have easily avoided that by charging it when it's not in use like every other person does. So nobody asks for controller batteries to last forever. I think most people would be fine as long as it lasts up to 12 hours or so. Which the current PS4 controller's battery definitely can. You are the only cause of your specific problem, so I recommend to just charge it when you put it down after you've stopped playing. You don't even need to keep the console running anymore as you had to do with the last gen.

@Atzenkiller: i never touch the new ones, but the old ones was pretty bad. well the new one which i hardly play with it, so i can't tell. how i'm misguided when my wii u pro controller, that i have since launch still in working condition and i've been doing the same thing when charging (i use the wii u pro controller more than the ps4 controller). hey if you like charging your controller all the time, go ahead, if it last for 2-3 more generation than it's fine. of course it'll die in the middle of the game session, it's not wired with a 10 ft. usb cord. not all people charge their controller when done playing. when did i say that, i never stated that anyway about batteries lasting forever. i've would be fine with it of it last 24 hours too. sound like a +6 hr. from the launch ones, that's okay. which i do, sometimes when done playing, if its flashing then i'll charge it. i kind of know that, charging without have the console on.

@nintendians: When I said it doesn't matter I meant that usually any other part of the controller will break down before the battery dies. It's never been an issue. But keep believing whatever story you're telling yourself, about the hazards of charging a controller too often. I've already pointed out to you that it's wrong and that with modern batteries it's actually harmful to let them uncharge fully. But you don't seem to care so keep doing what you're doing. If anything that only makes it more impressive that you've been seemingly doing the worst you could do to your controller's battery and that it could still last that long.

Considering the Dual shock has been synonymous with the Playstation controller almost since it’s inception it’s going to be hard for people to just forget about that name and replace it with something else.

I wouldn’t be surprised if gamers still call it the Dual Shock 5 late into its life cycle and Sony eventually caves and goes back to just calling it the 5.

That being said, the new features Sony has revealed sound like they really are going to help bring that sense of immersion into everyone’s favorite games to the next level. Now all we need to know is a price tag on this hardware. Better start saving your pennies gamers.
