Now Playing: Star Ocean: The Last Hope - 4K And Full HD Remaster Launch Trailer

Star Ocean: The Last Hope has been remastered and re-released on PS4 and PC, receiving overhauled high-definition graphics and 4K support. What comes as a surprise, though, is the level to which you can customize those graphics on the PlayStation 4 to obtain the best performance; the Star Ocean remaster offers the same level of graphics customization on console as it does on PC.

As noted by Digital Foundry, developer Tri-Ace now lets you toggle graphic choices like self-shadowing, camera blur, character detail distance, texture detail, and multiple anti-aliasing types. All of this can be done in an attempt to reach the remaster's target of 60FPS across all aspects of the game. Players can tweak their settings to make that happen, and Digital Foundry says, "The jump to 60 FPS across the board greatly improves the experience."

Base PS4 users can select between 720p and 1080p resolution, while PS4 Pro users can target 1440p or full 4K. It's a big jump from the Xbox 360 and PS3 days. Eurogamer says that extra clarity has a transformative effect on the game and results in a much more pristine image. Check out the game's remastered graphics in the video above.

The Star Ocean series has set itself apart from most other JRPGs with its sci-fi plot and real-time battles. In GameSpot's 2009 review of the The Last Hope for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, reviewer Lark Anderson said it was that addictive space combat system that made the game worth playing. Now, with this remaster and its custom settings, those battles should look even better.

even with all of those options, there are some parts of the game that just cant make it to 60fps on an original model ps4. roak seems to have the most performance issues. but its still an impressive effort. i havent played this game since the original xbox360 version in 2009. its a real treat being able to play the game again with updated graphics (and without having to constantly switch discs). its been a nice trip down memory lane and even though people say this game is crap, back in this game's prime, there wasn't much else available in the jrpg genre in 2008 so going into 2009, i still believe it was a great game for its time. it wont win any awards but its still a great game in its right. havent beaten the game yet (just getting to en2 now) but ive had more fun with this game than many that came out this year. im a big fan of tri ace and this game doesnt disappoint. its not the best in the series, but not the worst either. i was actually surprised by the $20 price tag. granted, thats probably what this game's worth but i thought square would milk as much money from this as they could and charge at $40 or more so $20 was an easy price to plunker down for another trip of nostalgia.

Sony can burn in fire,

Xbox can burn in hobos

Qualcomm can burn in hell.

(Duh they run a syndicate over how I play my mobile games, can't play Mario sunshine well ahhhhh, i never said it does alright geez your such a Wiener leave me alone.)

Stupid exclusive crap, even tho I finished Star ocean 4 on Xbox 360, it's average (not as good as xenosaga on ps2, or tales of vesparia)

I want to freaking rip my hair out with these stupid exclusives.

Hope these consoles get hacked and destroyed.

i don't know, the pc is much more powerful than the ps4 pro, if your running ultra high end. so i assume pc version might get down graded to match ps4 pro version.

@moose3469: Didn't even know they were working on this. Opened up Steam and there it was for sale.

I wouldn't mind the first two games being remade. But that would be way too much of an undertaking.

@lion2447: i swear this completely came out of left field. wonder why they didnt announce it until the last minute.

Oh ya. This is what I'm talking about. 4k? 1440p? Ps4 the true gamers console. Didn't even have to spend over $500 to get those specs either. Gotta love it. Xbox Done.

@onehitta323: true, you spent just over $400 for the pro instead. 👏

"in an attempt to reach the remaster's target of 60FPS"

yet on the pc version you find tips on how to keep it from going to far OVER 60fps. :)

anyway, i always said, more options is better.... if you don't want to mess with them you don't have to, but for people that don't particularly care for some things like motion blur, god rays.. etc.. for whatever reason, they can shut them off, it's somewhat of a win / win.

Now that's a pointless remaster. Did that game even sell? I remember having to stop playing it after a few hours cause it was just so boring. The graphics never were the issue.

I was sure price this game came to PC when saw it other day on steam . I to had to buy it. I have played it PS3 version

I rather have them optimize the game to preferred settings on console rather than us mismatch on the settings.

Avatar image for PSYCHOV3N0M
PSYCHOV3N0M

@sakaixx: Well even casual non-tech-savvy gamers could just google some forum threads about what settings to tweak in order to hit 60 fps. It's not hard.

I do get what you're saying though. It's just that I've grown tired of companies treating the general human as being too stupid to read/comprehend any set of intructions so said human can do it themselves OR they deny said human a certain feature (Microsoft not allowing you to upgrade the internal storage to a SSD) OR they re-activate certain toggles back on after an update (Apple with iOS, Facebook with privacy options) etc.

It's like if companies dictate: "STAY DUMB. DON'T EXERCISE YOUR FREEDOM OF CHOICE. ACCEPT WHAT WE GIVE YOU!"

Avatar image for sakaixx

@PSYCHOV3N0M: its a console, u want to have it run stable. No point in 4k if it runs shit.

I'm surprised they're putting so much effort into this particular Star Ocean, it didn't get alot of great reviews among either the popular gaming mags OR any other gamers I personally know. In fact I've been told it's a big let down compared to other Star Oceans.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@lonesamurai1: Now I'm even more confused about what the hell you're talking about than I was before. Are you talking about graphics settings? Yeah, the poor console gamers sadly don't have to mess with those. If only they knew what they're missing out on.

@sellingthings: WHY shouldn't players get to CHOOSE 1440p???

These pc settings on PS4 is a victory to me. I see no reason to question this at all.

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte
Xylymphydyte

@sellingthings: I wouldn't mind seeing this level of control more often myself since I often can't stand the motion blur and ambient occlusion most games implement, there's a lot of settings I'd tweak or turn off if allowed, especially in those games that ALMOST hit their target framerate but not quite, just let me turn off that resource hogging, ugly, constantly-fading-in-as-things-overlap-it AO and we're good.

Then there's games like the Dead Island re-releases which could totally hit 60fps on PS4 Pro if they gave it actual Pro support, OR if it had had the option to just turn off a few post processing effects.

A lot of people simply don't notice framerate or some of the advanced effects but those of us who do would surely enjoy being able to tweak things to our taste.

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte
Xylymphydyte

@sellingthings: You're largely right but developers target 30-ish-FPS-sorta-kinda-it-at-least-tries-to-hit-it-sometimes since fancy screenshots unfortunately sell more than the actual gameplay. Additionally they got nailed for bullshots enough times that now they just make the game look as nice as possible while maintaining the status of "technically playable".

If anything this does give us the best of both worlds. Graphics whores get their graphics, FPS whores get their FPS, it's fairly win-win, and convoluting the process just keeps the bar for entry SLIGHTLY higher, which is probably going to be a net positive effect for the quality of games.

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte
Xylymphydyte

@sellingthings: Realistically all they need to do to please both the "pop it in and play" and "tweak to taste" crowds is have the default settings optimized for 30fps and hide everything behind an "Advanced" button on the graphics tab below the gamma or something.

And I imagine the only backlash over this is going to be towards companies that don't offer similar options in games that can't hit their targets.

Avatar image for Brettsky128

I don't like this trend of making consoles more like PCs. It kinda defeats the purpose of having a console. I just wanna pop in a disc and play.

Avatar image for silvercloak
Silvercloak

@Brettsky128: Frankly - I'm glad they're starting to include PC's as a "cross platform" After over a decade of buying consoles - I'm pretty much done with consoles. Their lack of backwards compatibility is frustrating and disappointing. If I want to play an old game, I shouldn't have to dig up an old console and it's associated crap.

Avatar image for Xylymphydyte
Xylymphydyte

@Brettsky128: I'm pretty sure you can still do that, nothing wrong with a bit more customization to those who want to use it though.

I had no idea. Just checked the release schedule for the week and there it was. The game's worth it just to avoid that darned disc swapping.

Avatar image for Xirtahm

@Barighm: Wait.... "disc swapping"? Oh you bought the original XBOX 360 release. Yeah, I'm sorry. I hated that with Lost Odyssey, as AWESOME as that game was. The 4-disc trek gave me unwanted flashbacks of the PS1 era, heh heh.
