While Sony has yet to officially announce the price point for its upcoming virtual reality headset PlayStation VR, one research group has now provided a pricing prediction. In a new report from SuperData about the virtual reality market, the research group says you can expect it to cost between $400-$600.

No Caption Provided

By comparison, Oculus VR just yesterday announced that the first Oculus Rift consumer model will start at $600, a figure that does not include a capable PC that's required to run it.

One of the biggest differences between Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR is that if you're one of the 36 million people who already owns a PS4, you're good to go.

PlayStation executive Andrew House previously said that PlayStation VR would be priced as a new gaming platform. If he's talking about a traditional home console like the PS4, Xbox One, or Wii U, House's comments would suggest PlayStation VR will cost around $300-$400 or thereabouts.

The PS4 starts at $350.

PlayStation VR is scheduled to launch in the first half of 2016, though a specific release date has not been announced. Sony made no mention of PlayStation VR during its CES briefing this week. The headset is predicted to sell 1.9 million units in 2016, according to the same SuperData report.

The full report, "Virtual Reality Market Brief," is available as a free download here.

Seems like it's gonna cost as much as Sony's last VR headset, which was for the PlayStation 2 (back in 2002, Japan market only).

I said the same thing about the Oculus and now i'm going to say it about this, if it costs $600 to make a good VR headset then the technology is not where it should be and it will fail. Don't these smart people that make this stuff remember what happened in the early 90's with "virtual reality?" There were expensive headsets on the market back then but i bet most people don't remember them and that's because they couldn't sell them. I know that technology has come a long way and the VR experience is amazing now but still when the price for that experience is double what the console your selling goes for it will never work. If their plan is to only sell a handful of these things to the extreme gaming enthusiast with tons of money to burn then they are going in the right direction but if they think they will sell millions of these they are dead wrong. Very few people are going to shell out that kind of money. They need to keep on working on it till you can get a good VR experience for around the $200 to $300 at the most. You don't want the headset to cost more then the console that is simple. Oculus is worse cause it's $600 and you need to have a top of the line PC to use it. I saw this coming from a mile away, VR is going to come and pass just as it did in the 90's Too bad i was kind of looking forward to it.

The prices being quoted are an absolute joke and other than the few with more money than sense, VR will be an epic fail. If you factor in the headset, the price of at least a couple of games, camera, and move controllers, it would be well over a grand. i own a ps4, and love playing it, but on this occasion, considering the price being quoted, I have to say **** your VR sony.

@jerjef: Is this thing supposed to connect to the PS4... because that machine is NOWHERE near powerful enough to offer a good VR experience. You would need a beefy gaming PC.

My guess for the PS VR is $450.

After 3 months, if sales are lacking, it will be brought down to $400, 3 months after that, again based on sales, I can see it available for $350.

$350 for me is the sweet spot, plus it will give them plenty of time to work out any kinks, bugs, etc. in the system and games. Also enough comparisons articles would have been written by then, comparing Oculus to the PS VR to help my decision on which to purchase.

At the Tokyo Game Show Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Andrew House said "The unit will be priced as a new gaming platform". Is there a chance that if the PlayStation VR costs $600 and a brand new PS4 cost's $350 I could sue Sony for Perjury and get a headset for $350?

@echoalphaecho: He said new gaming platform not the price of one that is going on 3 years old. The PS3 was between $500 to $600 new, so maybe this is the new gaming price point he was talking about.

Do you really need to be an analyst to state some random $400-600 price range just a few minutes after Oculus unveils it $600 price tag? Really?

Only issue I see with it is that it's powered by a PS4. You need very high refresh rates for a good VR experience, so you have to chip away at graphics quality a lot to get where you need to be using a PS4. It has the extra processing unit, but I'm not sure that is going to actually let the graphics quality be jacked up, more likely it will help boost and maintain FPS artificially (basically a refresh rate upscaler), but you're still limited by the PS4's ability to create the detail of the graphics at a good fps to have something decent to upscale.

@oobga14: Exactly! They are saying you need a high end PC to make VR doable, and they want to run this thing off of a PS4? That thing can't even do 1080P at 30 FPS more often than not. That is not a good VR experience.

@bfeinberg: Yeah, I expect it to be pretty limited compared to PC. My guess would be any big name game will have the PS4 outputting 720p a 60Hz, then the video processing box will turn that into 1080p at 120Hz for the head set. It'll work just fine I'm sure, but if you have the option to play the same game on PC, you'll get a superior experience as long as you forked over the cash for a nice video card.

Guess that leads to the whole argument of relationship of game quality to graphics quality. I'm sure there will be plenty of fun games on the PSVR that you can't play anywhere else, and most people with PSVR won't care that the graphics could be better on PC. I care though ;)

Honestly right now at 28 (soon to be 29), I'm taking a small break from super hardcore heavy gaming. The price of this headset doesn't matter too much to me IF it has many many compelling games that truly benefit from a "VR" experience. This isn't me saying I'll automatically buy this day 1 but I need great game support to warrant a purchase.

Major flop is my prediction, my Vita, My Backwards Compatible PS3 (Motorstorm Bundle) that got YLOD, Move, Playstation Eye and Playstation TV are telling me that Sony doesn´t like to stand up for these new technologies, they will *(try to) sell it like its the second coming and then toss it under the carpet like it never existed.

$349-$399 is my prediction... and a $599 ps4 psvr bundle. They're making a profit off the ps4, so they could take a loss on the psvr.

@bfeinberg: You do realize it's not just a ps4 powering it right? It has a whole different processor to help it chug along. Everyone knows the ps4 by itself isn't capable of VR. You said the same thing like 3 times now. Do some research on it, read people's experience using it, and then make a judgment.

@7tizz: When it first came out it was real hot. There was actually a scarcity and people were selling it for a big profit on Ebay. That being said, there isn't a whole lot of software for it. It's for people that enjoy streaming and such more than anything.

I got one as part of a bundle. Its quite useful.

I use it to login and voice commands. Plus games for the kids like just Dance and there is the AR room stuff too.

I wouldnt say its a must have though.
