PS4's Fallout 4 Far Harbor DLC Updated, But You Need to Re-Download It

New version of Far Harbor "address performance issues" on PS4.

An updated version of Fallout 4's Far Harbor expansion has been released on PS4 following numerous reports of problems with the DLC.

Specific details regarding what's changed weren't shared, but Bethesda's official description of the update is that it "addresses performance issues." The process for obtaining this updated version is different than for a standard game update. Bethesda offers up the following guide to re-download the updated version of Far Harbor:

  • Confirm Fallout 4 is not running. Highlight Fallout 4 in your PS4 dashboard, press Options, and select Close Application to ensure Fallout 4 is not running minimized.
  • Select Related Items. You’ll find this under the Fallout 4 icon in the PS4 dashboard.
  • Select My Add-Ons.
  • Navigate to the Download Arrow next to Far Harbor and select it.
  • You should see a notice that Far Harbor has been Added to Downloads.
  • Wait for the downloadable content to finish downloading and installing before starting Fallout 4.

Should this not work, Bethesda recommends deleting Fallout 4 and its DLC from your system and then reinstalling all of it. If you're in Europe, the updated version isn't yet available, but word on that is promised to be coming "in the very near future."

A performance analysis of Far Harbor following its release showed that the expansion runs at 20 FPS on PS4, with the frame rate sometimes dropping even lower than that. The Xbox One version also doesn't run at a locked 30 FPS, though it is smoother than its PS4 counterpart. Digital Foundry blamed this on the volumetric fog that is prevalent throughout the large new area introduced in the expansion.

Far Harbor is the third DLC pack to be released for Fallout 4, and it's the biggest one to date. You can check out GameSpot's review of it here.

Fallout 4 runs like crap on everything, including PC. Sure, an above average PC can play it 60+.. but considering how old the graphics are, the performance vs the power needed is not good. It should run a lot better on below average PCs AND on the new consoles. In fact, it's archaic.

BOTTOM LINE: Fallout 4's game engine is OLD. You can try stay in fashion your whole life but eventually you're going to get tired and start looking stupid. These games need a whole new engine. This is one of rare scenarios where the game is actually to blame.

How about fixing the fact that 3 hours without a save (survival), I'm taking the elevator up to the top of a high rise, and I phase through the floor, dropping to my death? How about you fix the basics? That is such an amateur screw up, on my part, but more on Bethesda's. Fix the core game, guys. DLC can't be played without it.

Volumetric fog? Volumetric fog??? you can't tell me that the PlayStation 4 can't handle volumetric fog??, and that has nothing to do with why mods are coming to Xone first, Bethesda jumps in to bed with Microsoft.

Wait a minute... the PS4's weakness are massive fog clouds!? I wonder if Neo could handle the fog, or if Bethesda will always screw up on Sony hardware. It seemed like they were on a good start, but then they screwed up with fog.

Seriously, what's wrong with Bethesda? What's so hard to code for Sony? And by the way, I am not saying they are trash or anything like that, I just ask what is it with them for not being able to code properly on Sony hardware. Well, I hope there will be a mod for adding fog on the PS4 version.

@kaminobenimizu: They've got a deal with Microsoft so of course they have to make the PS4 version look bad.

For those of you who haven't downloaded it, it literally removes 90% of the volumetric fog. So baiscally PS4 users won't get the full experience of what the DLC's theme is. Kind of shame but it fixes the FPS issues mostly.

@codecat3: what the hell did Bethesda do with this thing's code? It's not like the PS4 can't do volumetric fog...

@7tizz: You mean the hardware that is more powerful than Xbox One and makes 99.8% of the multiplatform games look better? That hardware?

This was a screwup on the devs part. Sadly I know you know this but are just trying to bash a system you don't have.

@7tizz: "Makes you wonder what's wrong with the ps4 hardware"??? The only thing wrong here is X owners come out to ask what is wrong with PlayStation 4's hardware?

So in other words they probably completely reformatted the assets, different compression, lod optimization, and reworked geometry.

Hmm, if this is their solution for fixing a problem, i wonder whats gonna happen with mods, combine two mods that have a major conflict and have to redownload the game and all the dlc again?.

@Runeweaver: one of the biggest reason mods should not be on consoles.....you just dont have the control needed to make them run right......

That's kind of a sucky solution, but I suppose it's worth it so people can enjoy the expansion. Framerate in the teens is rough

This is...weird. But I don't care, as long as it works. Better not mess up my save files, Bethesda.

What's the reason this couldn't be a normal patch?

@milk: PlayStation 4 couldn't handle the performance that's why they needed to release another DLC update. It's Broken

@hacker_fc: That doesn't explain why they replaced the DLC in the store instead of releasing an update. Are you suggesting that PS4 doesn't support patching DLC?

@milk: it was not a patch.....it was a recode....and they got rid of 90% of the fog to make it run better with real frame rates.....
