PS4's 5.0 Update Revealed, Here's What It Does

PlayStation 4's update 5.0 is available now for some.

PlayStation 4's 5.0 update was leaked last week, and now Sony has officially revealed what's coming in the patch. In short, there are few huge features included in the update--which is out today for select beta testers--but lots of small improvements that should improve the system's functionality overall.

Some of the enhancements center around streaming using the PS4's built-in broadcasting capabilities. PS4 Pro users will be able to stream in 1080p and 60 FPS, provided their connection is strong enough, and PSVR users will be able to see new messages and comments coming through while broadcasting. PSVR is also adding 5.1ch and 7.1ch virtual surround sound support.

Next up, the PS4's Friends List is being updated with greater management tools, such as the ability to set up separate lists of friends. You'll be able to create a list of all the people you play Destiny with and send them all an invite, for example. This feature replaces the old Favorite Groups tab.

In another move to help reduce the amount of time spent in menus, the Quick Menu is being updated to have more options. For example, you'll be able to check on download progress and see new party invites. You can also leave a party from within that menu and see your current Spotify playlist.

Notifications are also being improved when watching films and TV, as you can now disable message and other notification pop-ups while watching media. You can also change how much of a message is displayed, as well as its color, when playing or watching any form of content.

Finally, Parental Control features are being overhauled in favor of what Sony calls "Family on PSN." This replaces the old Master/Sub account system; instead, one user is deemed the Family Manager, and they can set up other accounts and appoint them as a Parent/Guardian, Adult, or Child. Parents or Guardians can restrict Child accounts in their "use of online features and communication with other players, set restrictions for games, restrict the use of the internet browser, and set spending limits for PlayStation Store." Note that Sony says the first time any North American user tries to set up an Adult account, they will be charged $0.50 "to verify that you are an adult."

You can read all the details of the 5.0 update here. Beta testers who were selected to take part will be able to upgrade today, though bear in mind that your console may experience "unexpected issues" as a result of the beta. Sony does say, however, that you can downgrade to the current version of 4.73. The company has not revealed when the update will go live for all users, though beta invites do include two extra codes for testers to try it out with friends.

Sounds interesting.

I have to admit however that I don’t use half of the ‘friends’ stuff as much as I might. Perhaps this will be the turning point for me?

3 years ago, they said "PS2 compatibility is coming soon".
Can it do that yet?

No?

Then I still don't want one.

My guess is that they'll refund the 50 cents. I've had other companies use verifications like this and they've always instantly refunded the money back into my account. It isn't worth 50 cents to anger their customers. The small (for SONY) amount of revenue it would bring isn't worth it.

The only thing I need is for all that psplus bs to go away. I don't care about those games that are not free, I don't care about beta's and stuff. The only thing I care about is getting free multiplayer without the bs or at a much lower price. €20 a year is more than enough for multiplayer only.

@patricksz: I see what you mean. I too think the price is too high if one is expected to have to pay half as much again to get the entire game. Games that used to come complete on one disc.

Personally I would prefer all campaign, or at least longer campaign games. I don’t play MP much at all. Co-op I will try now and then. But not for long. So far PS+ is only worth it for the free games. But you lose those if you don’t complete them within a year and you can’t afford to resubscribe, or so I understand.

@patricksz: Sam, I don't believe in hiding 50% of the game behind a paywall and although I could easily buy a UK sub I won't because it is plain wrong.

@patricksz: PS+ is worth it, games on sale can be up to 80% off so what are you complaining about you cheap bum. You already know video games is a expensive hobby, I bought Amnesia collection, god of war 3, rayman, shadow of mordor, alien isolation for less than 35 bucks, people who don't have ps plus would spend much more...

@therealmattheew: Yes. I paid £39.99 for PSN. Two weeks later they emailed me and I got two games worth almost as much free. The following month I got another two games free. I’ve already got four games for free worth about 150% of my subscription. Only another 11 months to go.

Just got to find the time to play them now. ;-)

@therealmattheew: not worth it. I only want multiplayer. Lol at the retail store I can also get games cheap or second hand, I don't need PS plus for some discount.

Hmm let's see what this update does for a guy who doesn't own a PSVR, has no friends, not a father and doesn't broadcast but just plays games.

Download Progress in Quick Menu .

YASSS!

@loudroom: Same although Ive saved a few pics and vids...then again the novelty wore off lol

Instead of Sony wasting all its money on a few add ons that only a tiny percentage of users will use, why not divert those resources towards PSplus and makei t free again?

@loudroom: Same here -- although there have been a few times I've saved gameplay videos of particularly intense Bloodborne boss battles and Chalice Dungeons.

Other than that, console "features" are about as important to me as having flashy tire valve caps on my car.

Virtual surround sound for PSVR sounds good. Maybe this will lead to some more spooky atmospheres in VR horror games.

Wish they'd bring back the option to shut the controller off just by holding down the PS button like PS3, 360 and Xbox One rather than the current 3 or 4 step process now.

@PSYCHOV3N0M: the fee is probably to verify whether you're old enough to have a credit card which is why its such a nominal amount. Since kids generally don't have access to credit cards, this is simply a deterrent.

@Yomigaeru: No. Pre-paid cards don't have a billing address, so they cannot be verified when attempting to add one as a payment method.

Sounds like a lil xbox update. How cute. Except the .50 set up fee for new accounts, wtf lol. On xbox you get a free name and one free name change per account. Damn, at least it plays games tho I suppose.

The added features are all well and good, but this line kind of confused me.

"Note that Sony says the first time any North American user tries to set up an Adult account, they will be charged $0.50 "to verify that you are an adult.""

Uh...does that include current users that already have a main account? So did Sony just introduce a way to bank a few extra million in the process of adding this feature?

Does this mean we can finally share games within family, or not? Because we have 2 PS4s and one PS4Pro in the household, and that whole primary ps4 BS is a slap in the face.

@yngsten: you have to make the account that buys the games to your prime.. and the others have to be under your account. Like if they were your kids.

Then you can share all of your digital games.. go to the psn websites it explains it much better then i can.

I hope it helps.
