PS4's 2.0 Update Lets You Listen to Your Music While Playing Games

The system's home screen will also be improved, plus details on other features coming to PS4, Vita, and PS TV.

Update: One of the features Sony said is coming as part of the 2.00 update--the ability to back up data to a USB drive--actually won't be included in this particular firmware.

Original Story: We've been hearing about the PlayStation 4's 2.00 firmware update for more than two months now. It's still not quite ready, but Sony has detailed more (but not all) of the changes it will bring with it, including the ability to listen to your own music while playing games.

By loading music onto a USB drive, you'll be able to make use of the new USB Music Player feature being introduced in the 2.00 update. This is briefly described in a new PlayStation Blog post and is said to allow you to listen to music while playing games. However, it's unclear if in-game music will be automatically disabled when doing so.

Supported file types include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP. Unfortunately, these files will have to remain on the USB drive in order to be listened to--you won't be able to copy them to your PS4's hard drive and play them from there. That seems like a real oversight (especially considering it's something the Xbox 360 supported many years ago), but it's hopefully something that will be rectified in the future. If it is, Sony isn't providing any indication that it plans to do so yet.

The content area--that is, the home screen where you see your most recently used games and apps--is also being improved, albeit not to the degree many are likely hoping for. This area will now limit what it displays to your 15 most-used games or apps, with the rest being stored in the Library section. The Library has been updated to let you filter and sort through what you have stored on the system, providing options like sorting by recently used, install date, name, and type.

No Caption Provided

One of the major 2.00 features we've already heard about is theme support, something which recently launched on PlayStation Vita. In addition to themes, you'll be able to select from a number of colors (red, blue, green, pink, purple, gray, and gold) to serve as the home screen's background in place of the existing light blue option. You can see what these look like in the gallery below.

Other small additions in 2.00 include a "players you may know" area in the What's New section, improved voice commands, enhanced live streaming (both for those streaming and those looking for streams to watch), and a way to back up PS4 data (settings, saves, screenshots, downloads, video clips, and other things) to a USB drive [see update note above]. There's also a small feature I'll be especially grateful for: A new "Add to Library" button on the PlayStation Store, which will make it easy to claim a free PlayStation Plus game without having to download it immediately.

The 2.00 update also brings with it the other features we heard about in August--YouTube sharing for videos and the much-anticipated Share Play.

New updates for both the PlayStation Vita/PlayStation TV and the mobile PlayStation App are coming up, too. The new Vita update, version 3.35, will be released at the same time as the PS4's 2.00 update (whenever that is--Sony still isn't saying). It'll add four-player Remote Play support to the PS TV, while introducing the Live From PlayStation app (used for watching PS4 game streams) to both Vita and PS TV. The PlayStation App's 2.00 update, meanwhile, will also come at the same time and redesigns the home screen, while providing a new layout on tablets.

While I can play the music on the USB without an issue, when I go into a game (like Destiny) the sounds from the game come out louder than the music - there is no option either in-game or on the console to lower or turn off the games music.

This is a really nice update. Very useful stuff. Very high quality sound from the USB Music Player when output through a Hi Fi system.

If anyone is having trouble with the USB music player, make sure you create a folder called 'MUSIC' in the root directory of your USB stick, ie the folder should be visible when you first open the stick on your computer. The PS3 required the same. You can create as many sub folders as you like inside the MUSIC folder in order to create any library structure you want. All mp3 files must have .mp3 at the end or they won't be recognised and sit somewhere inside the MUSIC folder. The USB stick must be formatted in FAT32. When you plug it in the USB Music Player app launches.

I always found it odd that the PS3 never let you listen to music while playing games while the 360 did.

I'm glad the feature is making it on the PS4 now.

This might help on when the update is coming out pep's. Far Cry 4 will support PS4 Share play. Meaning you can play the game with a friend even if you do not own the game. So maybe the update will be out next month when they release Fry Cry 4.

My ps3 let me store music, videos and photos easily onto internal memory. And also it had PlayTV to record television shows onto its internal memory as well. My ps3 was the ultimate entertainment hub.

My PS4 is disappointing.

Literally the only thing I care about in a future update is the ability to watch video files from a USB. I sold my PS3 a couple of years ago and bought a cheap DVD player with a USB in the meantime presuming the PS4 would have the same capability. Sold the DVD player soon as my PS4 arrived.

Man I was pissed.

Fucking companies nowadays will do anything to squeeze some extra pennies. Video Unlimited my ass.

It's promising though now at least you can play mp3s through a USB... there's hope yet for my mp4s...

Oh how grand and utterly pointless. Let's all go out and buy one and pretend it lets us do things and has games, when it meets neither qualification.

Meanwhile Xbox is slaying it in the tryhard and dotherightthing categories and can't sell.

If that's your idea of all the games that are available on the ps4 in the last 11 months, you really need to get your head out of your a$$. I'd ask what's on the X1 that's so exciting, but I know exactly the game list you'll give me. I, unlike yourself am not going to nit pick those games, just because I have no interest in them. Fact is if you love your console so much you'd be playing it, not tr0lling Sony articles in some desperate attempt to justify your purchase.

You realize at least half the game you listed are also on the X1, right? On top of it the newest borderlands isn't on next gen consoles. I was talking more about killzone sf (bad writing, good gameplay), infamous ss (so good I played it again immediately after beating it), then there's am the free mmo's I could spend years playing without paying a dime (that includes not requiring ps+), and the best of pc' indies in part few years making their way to the ps4. If you can't find something worth playing on it, the issue is your f@nboy bias, not the ps4. That said if you dislike it so much, why even bother commenting here in the first place. My guess is your suffering from a serious case of your head firmly up your f@nboy a$$.

That's a decent solution, keeping 15 recent games on the main screen then move the rest to the Library. I have 38 games and scrolling through the line is getting a bit much.

I am beginning to think that all these monthly updates are just gimmicks designed to renew monthly interest in the console! I really don't understand why both Sony and Microsoft are being such an inconvenience in this regard. Common sense suggest that all features that both Sony and Microsoft can think of at the time of the update should be added all at once instead of little by little?

I would assume that the goal would be to create a interface so rock solid and forward thinking as far as features are concerned that any future update would not have to be required for the next 6 months or so. A interface that requires monthly updates just to add common sense features that should have been there to begin with is incompetence in my opinion unless its done on purpose.

@youngzen69 Actual reality and business practice dictates thats physically impossible to do even for a god of the industry like MS. Xbox division is not that big.

Coding all of this and QAing it to death until it works perfectly is an extremely time consuming and staff-consuming process.

Microsoft rolls out intended features as many as they can at a time without churning out trash that needs a patch just to fix the patch.

Yet it took them many years to develop a 360 that doesn't kill itself with overheating. Hmm, I guess both companies have their strengths and weaknesses.

@canuckbiker Your statement is non-sequitur and doesn't even make sense. I said it takes time. You said it takes time.

And no, actually, the RROD was solved very quickly in terms of the 360s lifespan.

No, the rrod was a big issue for the first two manufacturing cycles spanning about the first four years after the 360's launch. They just managed to bring it down a bit from its initial 33% failure rate. It wasn't properly resolved for a long time.

I was responding to your last sentence. I assumed the patch to fix a patch was knock on Sony (one they deserve). It's no secret Sony struggles with software development, it's also no secret Microsoft struggles with hardware. That was the point of my reply. Why I even bother communicating with a blind, hypocritical fanboy is beyond me though.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I agree with your point that many of these features should have been there at launch. I find it egregious that features that were on Xbox 360 or PS3 were not on Xbox One of PS4 at launch. There is no excuse for the newer console to lack features of the previous generation. With that said though, I am actually happy the are not trying to cram everything in to one massive update. That's when corners are cut and bugs are introduced. Is it annoying to wait several months for that one feature you personally feel is the obvious thing the console is missing? Sure. But I'd rather the feature be implemented correctly and not cause stability issues just because it was packed with 100 other features. Just my $.02.

When they say "USB Music Player," I assume they mean that you can only play the music through USB rather than having the ability to download it to the PS4's hard drive through said method. If that's true, that is one of the dumbest ideas Sony could have possibly come up with.

Another dumb idea (that PERFECTLY compliments the previously mentioned one) is putting only TWO USB ports on the PS4. Where exactly are we supposed to play this music? Between the dongle of the Gold Wireless Headset and the constant charging rotation of said headset and the PS4 controller, there will almost never be a spot open to satisfy your Barry Manilow hankering.

So, unless we buy a powered external USB hub (or this firmware update magically unlocks more ports on the PS4 unit), I think many of us are SOL.

@rawkstar007 Or you could learntoaccessories like anyone who uses technology. Get a USB port extender. They are practically free.

Hell, get a whole additional USB switch and plug in 1024 usb devices.

But yea, the thing should have more ports. All things with USB should come with like 16 usb ports by default, unless they're just small.

The new-gen consoles haven't even been out for a year, by the way, so it's doubtful that everything will be in either console that everyone wants there to be. If there's one thing you shouldn't worry about, it's these updates, because MS and Sony will build theirs upon each other. Games are the most important thing, so focus on what works best with your favorite video game genres.
