The Long Dark has been in Early Access on PC and Xbox One for a while, but today developer Hinterland announced that PS4 players will soon get to try it out as well.

The beautiful and difficult survival game will launch for PS4 on August 1 alongside a new narrative mode, called Wintermute. In a PlayStation Blog post, creative director Raphael van Lierop explained that the story will be a five-part episodic series, with the first two episodes scheduled for release on August 1.

Now Playing: The Long Dark -- Wintermute Launch Announcement Trailer

Lierop stated that the developer took inspiration from Cormac McCarthy's The Road, a post-apocalyptic novel about the relationship between a father and son. In Wintermute, two characters--Will Mackenzie and Astrid Greenwood--crash-land in Canada after a "geomagnetic disaster."

In the first two episodes, the player controls Mackenzie, but Lierop says that later episodes will let players control Greenwood, as well. Each episode will be about five hours long.

Currently, Hinterland intends to release the other three episodes sometime later in 2017 and 2018, although Lierop notes those plans could change.

Wintermute will launch on Xbox One and PC, as well as PS4. Hinterland also announced today that The Long Dark will be officially out of Early Access on August 1.
