PS4 Tops Xbox One In February 2017 US Sales

Sony's console came out on top for the second month of the year.

Comments

Extending its win streak another month, Sony's PlayStation 4 was the top-selling home console in the United States for February, according to NPD data released today.

Sony did not have a statement to share, but a representative confirmed that the PS4 was the No. 1 overall home console in the US in terms of sales for February.

In its own statement, Microsoft said global Xbox One game hours in February jumped 11 percent year-over-year, while global unique multiplayer users reached 35 percent-plus growth compared to last year. Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols called out Halo Wars 2, For Honor, and Grand Theft Auto IV (in backwards compatibility) as helping drive engagement on Xbox One during the month.

A week from today, the NPD Group will announce the top-selling games for February 2017. We'll report back with more details as they become available.

One, what happened to the 3DS that was the top seller time and time again that Nintendo fanboys acted was like the PS4? Switch is going to win March, no question about that, not with the insanely strong launch it just had.

Scorpio is doomed. $700 upgrade but nothing good to play on it. Big flop awaits.

Congrats Sony, looks like it will be another great year to own a PS4!!

I believe that SONY will slightly undercut the Scorpio as we get closer to it's release date. There will probably be a so called "Leak" announcing a PS5 in the works, with such and such spec wont put it past them....we shall see.

@givenchy7: as a ps fan , that doesn't seem like Sony and more like MS. Ps5 will be released on their own time frame and it will probably be annoyed in yr 2 of Scorpio. The margin is so big that I don't think Sony is that worried about Scorpio. im pretty sure they are pretty confident about the PS4 and their focus is now on content .

@frostkilledmetwice: I understand your point 100%. So I'll say this...remember a system can still be 2 years away and still be so called leaked. But overall I agree with your comment.

And also some people may not realize. SONY has some killer exclusives...and I don't think that third party developers will leave the successful PS4 platform just because games might have better frame rates or textures on Scorpio.

the PS4 pro has the best visual over the regular PS4 and XBOX S and it sales for $399...after Microsoft releases the Scorpio, Sony might Drop the price of the PS4 pro...and when compared to the Scorpio if the PS4 pro manages to look gorgeous still...it will be the cheaper alternative to the Scorpio. i.e Microsoft is not out of the woods yet.

No surprise. The multiplats look better on it and the exclusives are a lot more and better than Xbox One. I will be curious to see how Switch plays into this next month.

Xbox needs some new IP's besides Gears of War and Halo- not bad games, but old as shit and worn out. Forza is the only notable genre where they hold the edge.

@JEF8484: I'd put Xbox ahead with first person shooters as well.

Avatar image for frostkilledmetwice

@sealionact: the problem with fps is there's enough good multiplatform fps games out there that it's okay to miss halo and gears. Same can't be said for racing game though.

@JEF8484: They don't "hold the edge" with Forza. Not a bad game, but nope.

@ButDuuude: Which racing game would you rate as better than Forza?

Avatar image for deactivated-58ff9664c182d

@JEF8484: I was a YUGE fan of Halo CE, the only time I remember staying up till dawn playing. Enjoyed Gears as well, but looking at the sequels it simply does not captivate my interest. With intriging releases like Horizon, Uncharted and Nioh, Microsoft has lost me.

@rahroc: Just beat Nioh and felt like celebrating after, lol. Playing Horizon now, its an amazing game.

Billyboy Gates needs to quit worrying about eugenics and start concentrating on the xb0ne. I have no reason to upgrade from my 360.

Next month goes something like this: 1st - Switch, 2nd - PS4, Last - **XBOX ONE**

@moonco: the switch will win 2 months then go back to dead last. I'd be surprised if it sold more than the wii u.

I thought you said it would have more exclusives at launch than the xb1 has in total.

Funny because just the other day I read that we aren't getting streaming apps because they were focusing on the games but there's only a handful and only one that interest me. If it wasn't for zelda it would be if not already the worst launch line up in history. I love nintendo, but let's face it they are closer to death than the xbox.

Avatar image for ButDuuude

@neoistheone: The Switch will probably win first month, but not a second month straight because Nintendo didn't make enough of them.

Avatar image for xhawk27

@moonco: Good for you. Last year Xbox One won five months. Can the Switch do that?

Avatar image for vamplife

@xhawk27: It is portable. That is the key thing little kids will love. Nintendo handhelds have reigned supreme over competition since the first gameboy. The switch will do very very well because of that alone. I played Zelda on switch it was fun. Now they don't have enough new original games for me yet because I want to see more. The price though is good and people will jump on that. It's opening numbers have been better than the wii u and selling out.

@xhawk27: Because Sony announced PS4 Pro and people waited... but you know that. Perhaps Xbox One isn't selling because Microsoft announced Scorpio?

Avatar image for neoistheone
Neoistheone

@khanwashere: no one was waiting.lol

250,000 people that bought a launch pro already had a ps4 hell I have multiple ps4 consoles.

The pro till this day has not sold 1 million consoles worldwide. Sony usually tells us when something like that happens but it's been months since it launch and now it maybe just embarrassing to announce that. They thought they were going to sell 1 million pro models on day one.

Avatar image for frostkilledmetwice
frostkilledmetwice

@neoistheone: Sony is combining sales of PS4, ps4 slim, and PS4 pro because they are in the same family. They have always done this. Do you know how much PS3 slim sold. This is how it's always done, unlike Microsoft who combines Xbox one with Xbox 360 sales. Two different generations and you tell me who's embarrassed.

Avatar image for frostkilledmetwice
frostkilledmetwice

@frostkilledmetwice: so how many PS3 skins were sold. Announced by Sony, not outside speculations. Since you think they had always done it until now seems it should be easy to find.

Avatar image for neoistheone

@frostkilledmetwice: we do know how many slims vrs pros just not from Sony but the numbers are out there. If they had something to brag about they would. When was the last time Microsoft combined sales for the 360 and xb1?

Avatar image for frostkilledmetwice
frostkilledmetwice

@neoistheone: the combined the sales because they were embarassed about Xbox one individual sales number. Every time they announced their sales number for Xbox one it was a combination of one and the 360. Later they just decided to not announce sales number at all since even as a group it was losing bad to PS4. Just google when Microsoft released sales number and the ones that they did announce its noted its includes 360.

Sony outsold MS again, kind of a "no duh!" thing at this point.

Sony has been murdering MS in sales since launch. The XB1S stole a couple months, but it was inevitable the PS4 would hop back on top.

Avatar image for xhawk27
xhawk27

@titang1: Yeah and I guess the Xbox Scorpio is going to steal a couple of months too? lol

Avatar image for vamplife
Vamplife

@xhawk27: People are not going to say let me get the scorpio because 1 it will be expensive and 2 they will just stick with the cheaper xbox one slim. Also no games this year. It is not going to do well. Nintendo switch will steal half of scorpios shine for the holidays because of price, fun factor of kids and adults being able to take it as a portable anywhere. Only people who are hardcore gamers with money will shell out money for that knowing it is a waste of money because what are they going to play that they can play on the slim.

Avatar image for edwardnygma
EdwardNygma

@xhawk27: I doubt it. High price tag and no games. Not exactly a great incentive.

Avatar image for neoistheone
Neoistheone

@edwardnygma: I don't see the Scorpio selling very well. If it sells a million by the end of the year it will be considered a success in my books.

I'm pretty excited for it though. It's good to see Xbox not half assing hardware anymore.

Avatar image for edwardnygma
EdwardNygma

@neoistheone: Yeah I don't either.

Avatar image for titang1
TitanG1

@xhawk27: Probably, but I doubt it. Given the price tag of the console likely being over $500, I doubt it'll fly off shelves when there are MUCH cheaper option available, and who knows, by the time Scorpio releases Sony might price cut the PS4 again, then it most definitely won't overcome PS4 in sales.

sony has been on a rampage since december with all the exclusives... and GOOD ones at that. last guardian, gravity rush 2, nioh, nier 2 (console exclusive at any rate), horizon.... persona 5 is on the way as is gran turismo sport. maybe we will see detroit and days gone released later on in the year as well.

what's hitting xbox these days? scorpio can't come soon enough but if there are no games lined up for it, what does it matter?

Avatar image for Supabul

I like both systems but MS and Sony need to start bringing more first party games out, so far we got Horizon and Halo Wars 2, what upcoming first party games are coming out soon

Avatar image for mddg_mmcc

@Supabul: What are you talking about? Sony has a ton of first-party games/series.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Interactive_Entertainment#Software_development_studios

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sony_Interactive_Entertainment_video_games#PlayStation_4

Compare that to Microsoft's first-party offerings:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Studios#Software_development_studios

Crackdown, Forza Horizon, Quantum Break, State of Decay, etc. are all second-party. First-party is pretty much just Halo, Gears, and Forza (Motorsport, not Horizon). That's it.
