PS4 System Update 2.51 Rolls Out

Patch notes outline various stability improvements.

Sony has begun rolling out a new system software update to PlayStation 4, bringing with it various tweaks and improvements to the previous firmware build.

The console update weighs about 245MB, and should now be available to PS4 owners across North America and Europe. Brief patch notes, copied below, suggest that the new update will implement minor fixes.

PS4 Update 2.51 Patch Notes

  • System software stability during use of some features has been improved.
  • Operation quality during use of some applications has been improved.

One bug that some users discovered back in March, where a notification informing players about Rest mode would continually pop up when the console turned on, has not been fixed.

That's why I don't buy systems at launch: too many patches ahead!

@franzito: You'll have to download them all at once when you buy it eventually dum dum... and patches aren't all 'fixes', some are new apps and add-ons.

@franzito@mr_azim: he's saying you're going to have to patch the system whenever you buy it. the changes will never be pre installed. so instead of a little at a time, you'll have to install hours of patches all at once if you get the system later on.

@Urizen5: In my xp with previous consoles, they actually do put the latest system software on new SKU's.

@franzito@Gomtor@Urizen5: It just seems like kind of a strange reason not to buy a console at launch. If anything you should be more worried about the prices and lack of titles.

Every time I read the patch notes and it says anything about stability, I just look like a question mark. I have never had any problems at all with the PS4. Has anyone had problems?

@toffifee: as a web developer (different line of work i know) i sometimes roll out changes to framework before a major update. This can be new components or modifications to existing components, so i can see why they would be marked as "stability improvements". May not be the case, but i'd imagine largely that it is.

@toffifee: as a web developer (different field of work i know) sometimes we make changes to underpin changes to existing or new framework ready for future upgrades. These are probably marked as stability updates as they tend to improve the existing system in place. Hope this helps.

Mine rocks a little. Maybe they think these stability updates might fix it.

Yeah, I have. Lost save files multiple times, snd I had a weird EC-12004 code when trying to play Shadow Warrior at launch. After an update 3 or 4 weeks later I could play it. Lots of crashes leading up to firmware 2.00 as well

I had an issue after the previous firmware update to where I had to power my PS4 all the way off and power it back on to be able to open the PSN Store. If I booted it from rest mode the store would not open. I wonder if this update fixed that annoying little issue.

As many stability updates they've pushed out, mine is still off balance. Maybe its because I'm using a single stack of dominos to hold it up.

Try adding another stack.

One on top of the other stack as a single large stack.

Everyone know two stacks of dominos will add stability.
