PS4 State Of Play: All The Big News, Announcements, And Games

Here's the biggest news from Sony's presentation.

Sony's first-ever State of Play--the company's stab at a pre-recorded, Nintendo Direct-style video presentation--aired earlier this week. Despite being relatively brief, clocking in at around 20 minutes, it provided us with a look at a number of games and updates on the way to PS4 in 2019. The broadcast kicked off in big fashion with the reveal of a new Iron Man VR game, but that wasn't the only announcement; we also learned about a No Man's Sky VR update and got to see new trailers for Days Gone and Mortal Kombat 11 (featuring some new characters), among other titles.

If you missed out on the presentation, we've rounded up all of the biggest news and announcements from it below. You can also watch a replay of the stream here. While much of the news concerns games that are further down the road, if you're eager for something new to occupy you in the meantime, April's PS Plus games have been revealed and will be available beginning April 2.

Sony started off its State of Play presentation by unveiling Marvel's Iron Man VR. Developed by Camouflaj in conjunction with Worldwide Studios and Marvel Games, the game puts players behind the visor of the Iron Avenger. No further details were shared beyond that, but Iron Man VR is slated to release for PS4 this year.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled

The remastered kart racing game Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled launches on June 21, and we learned the PS4 version will include some exclusive content in the form of blocky, PS1-style character skins for Crash, Coco, and Cortex, along with a retro track and karts.

Developer Hello Games is adding PSVR support to its sandbox space exploration game, No Man's Sky, this summer as a free update. Rather than being a separate mode, however, players will be able to play through the entire game in VR. Additionally, the PS4 version of No Man's Sky: Beyond will receive a physical release, and it'll come with the base game, VR support, and every update through Beyond.

ReadySet Heroes

The isometric dungeon crawler ReadySet Heroes is coming to PS4 later this year. The game features four-player multiplayer and pits you against another team in a race through a monster-filled dungeon. Reach the end of the dungeon and you'll face off in a winner-takes-all showdown.

@doctor_mg: No, they always show one game for half hour that no one cares about... like Smash Bros for the 5th time or Pokemon :/ No one wants to watch another boring Pokemon game that goes nothing new.

@Terrorantula:

Super Smash Bros is the fastest selling exclusive game this generation, and Pokemon consistently sells around 15 million, so saying no one cares about these franchises is completely false.

Not to mention that, just in the last few Nintendo Directs, they've announced games like Luigi's Mansion 3, Daemon Ex Machina, Mario Maker 2, Animal Crossing, Platinum Games' Astral Chain, Links Awakening Remake, and many others.

The best thing that Nintendo does with their directs is provides an idea of what they will be about. If you don't like Super Smash Bros then don't watch the Super Smash Bros direct. Sony could take a lesson, this VR emphasized State of Play was abysmal for someone like me expecting a new game announcement that I might actually play.

Does anyone else remember PSN Pulse? It was a weekly(?) show in the PS3s What’s New area. This is basically that without the host. I miss that. Sony should consider putting in the PS4s What’s New area.

VR is a cool feature and maybe will play a big part of gaming future but for now only small percentage of PS4 owners use it Sony must not put a whole show focus on it regardless of how long/short/important the show is - they have to stop pushing it on people until VR community is much bigger than it is today.

@berrlett: You got it backwards. It's exactly *because* PSVR is proportionally smaller that Sony pushed it hard during the show. It's a clear answer to Stadia, if you think about it. What is the only thing that is unfeasible on streaming for the foreseeable future? VR. It's gonna take a while for the framerate and latency to be good enough to do VR on streaming. So Sony is doubling the bet on VR.

Even though there's PS Now, Google and Microsoft are in a much better position to push game streaming. So Sony is pulling a Nintendo and doing its own thing. For now. Maybe that partnership with Amazon will materialize, but betting on VR is a smart present day strategy. I bet (and hope) this will carry on with the PS5.

@gfantini:

Have done my share of reading, watching stuff on social media on the topic of streaming games and I see the huge backlash of gamers and critics alike every time there is a mention of dedicating platforms/consoles to it. Yes Google and MS are better positioned to stream and if I were Sony I'd be rubbing my hands and plan my strategy to remain faithful to the formula that won me this generation in the console market by several folds over competition not panic because this competition is playing with fire and think of a counter strike to what they are doing and focus a whole show on VR. Remember there is no E3 this year for Sony so these shows must be planned carefully, for my money as a Sony consumer I'd rather stick to what convinced me to make it my primary gaming platform - Games, all other add-ons will have their share of focus and growth but they will remain and add-on. Look what happened to MS when they dropped this notion and kept hyping up add-ons.

@berrlett: You're looking back. But the future is forward. That is the most common mistake a major company makes towards ruin. DEC with their minicomputers, Blockbuster with their refusal to buy Netflix, Kodak and the dismissal of digital cameras… so on so forth.

The initial resistance against Stadia is more than expected. Human beings are inertial by nature. Skepticism towards disruptive tech is the norm, not the exception. Moreover, that backlash comes from people who are not the primary target for the service. Stadia is aiming the "2 billion gamers". You know, either casual gamers or people who are not even into gaming right now. It's not for you nor for me. At least for the time being. But it will attract an increasing number of people who usually buy consoles and high-end PCs as time goes by and the internet gets better. It's that transition those corporations I cited above were too late to realize.

the world was/is always ready for new innovations, 2 thirds of that world is NOT ready for 100% premium internet reliance. This is why for now a great idea such as the one advertised aggressively by Tesla relying on electric auto pilot is not bearing fruit for now and share prices keep dropping down, you can list 100s more when market is not ready for a certain product it is not ready for a reason- Maybe Stadia like MS will prioritize north America since they know outside of that zone hardly any other will be interested and/or ready.

@berrlett: Exactly: one third of the world equals over 2 billion people. That is a big enough market for any product or service.

Of course Stadia is the kind of service you roll out gradually. Google's keynote specifically says it will launch in select countries. But you see, I live in a medium city in Brazil and I enjoy a 100 mbps fiber internet connection. No caps. Netflix is virtually instantaneous in my home. In 4K.

Moreover, 5G will gradually break these connection barriers starting in 2019.

Now, if anyone knows how adequate internet infrastructure is for such a service around the world… That one is Google. They know how good your connection is better than you do. Much better in fact. You see… we're not arguing over OnLive. This time it's f'in Google. One of the most powerful and rich companies on earth.

Google is actually pushing fiber networks all over in an effort to build the required infrastructure. It will take years, yes. But there's no turning back.

We are different on the topic of merchandising and how appealing could a company make a product tailor suited to maximum audience/market possible. You know whats bigger than a third ? --- the remaining 2 thirds this is where your risk as google and/or MS will be because someone else will just swoop in and eat that gap (gaming/console market sales these other companies already dominating).

I am based in Europe, maybe the situation now is different but a mate of mine toured Brazil back in 2014 for the soccer world cup behind his country from Sao Paulo to Rio to Porto Alegre to Belo Horizonte etc and I quote him "Internet/normal internet connection is like a unicorn in a lot of these places in Brazil :)" I hope its better now for you guys or maybe it was because of the sheer volume of people at the time trying to connect.

We are also different on the topic of how a giant company can build castles in the clouds where for now we're still on earth, it will come for sure however, you just to have understand your audience better now or someone else will understand them.

After seeing it at my place a few of my friends got it, that kind of thing has to be happening more and more. I'm glad Sony's giving it the support it deserves.

Still big majority of the nearly 100M PS4 gamers are not on VR of course its growing and all but to have a show that you feel was created to promote VR and ignore the majority of non VR players I feel at this stage is a poor decision. Should work out proportionally correct, i.e if you have 10 games to announce there should be 7 to main PS4 players (primarily non VR maybe a couple with VR support) and 3 exclusive to VR - not the other way around.

@berrlett: If you look at the library of games for VR vs what's available in non-VR then I don't know how you can make the claim that they're ignoring the majority of non-VR gamers.

There are some games that would be very difficult or pointless to do in non-VR, and it makes sense that some games are VR-only. Many let you play with and without VR. I think they found the right way to strike a good balance and to put games where they work best.

@berrlett: That seems like an odd comment to me. It doesn't make sense to expect a "state of" show to follow any kind of formula, it's about showcasing what's new and that can change at any time. This is what there is to show now. I'm sure there will be some shows with no VR titles at all. I don't think next time we can expect the exact same ratio of games either, or the same genres of games, or the same budget class of games, or the same studios showing games, or the same anything. Look at Nintendo Direct, one time they'll be all about Labo, or all about Pokemon, or 3DS and mobile stuff, or online stuff, it's always different.

@berrlett: Well, my fear is that they're going to make VR a huge part of the PS5, or they're going to want it to be a huge part of the PS5, and they're trying to get us all used to it now. I very much hope this isn't the case for any number of reasons, and they'd be fools to do it. Gamers don't like hardware being forced upon them. Just ask Kinnect.

@olddadgamer: Fear? It sounds like a plus to me. Having it as a standard thing from the start is a good idea. I hardly think it will be mandatory but I can see a lot of games like RE7 or NMS or Tetris having a VR mode and be playable in non-VR as well.

But forcing a game to be playable in VR or forcing a VR game to work on TV would make for a subpar experience either way and I'm sure nobody will be forced one way or the other. It doesn't make sense for a lot of games to work on both, but where it does then I'd like it to be an option from the start. And that's what VR will be, an option. Making it essential, I don't see that happening at all. It will be an accessory.

@girlusocrazy: Well, my fear is what you say in the second paragraph there. Forcing a VR game to work on a TV, or vice versa, messes it up. If the PS5 has so much VR going on for it, then I fear that the primary way they'll make (most) games are VR experiences first and foremost that you can play on a TV. We'll wind up with having to play VR in order to get the best experience on (most) games. If we're already at a point where half the games that Sony touts in one of these streams are VR, then that percentage is only going to go up.

I'm perfectly ok with VR being a thing. But I don't want to have to settle for the second best version of (most) games if I play on TV.

@olddadgamer: You might as well have the same fear of all games being 3D just because that's possible. I think of VR as a separate genre, and I don't see other genres going away, or becoming less desirable, because we define new ones. I love VR but I still play and enjoy and look forward to non-VR games. I think developers will still have the desire to make the kinds of games we've had so far in addition to other new types.

Half the games in this stream have VR in it, but did the last one? And what about the next? There was a racing game and a superhero game in this one, are they going to show a racing game and superhero game next time too? They showed us a fighting game, I don't see those going to VR any time soon, and if you played Tekken 7's VR mode you'll probably agree!

On the flip side, they told us they weren't showing up at E3 because we know most of their big games, and the games they consider big aren't VR exclusive and I don't know if they will even have VR modes. They're not making developers shoehorn VR into Last of Us 2 or turning it into first person rather than third person. I don't feel like they're abandoning VR because of that. Like mobile gaming, or 3D accelerated games, VR is just another option and won't be the end of other types of games.

And no matter how good VR gets, a TV will probably always look better because it's easier to produce good looking large displays than the same in a small format, and because the frame rate doesn't need to be as high so they can render with more fidelity. It will always be attractive to play on a TV and people will always want that experience.

@girlusocrazy: Ah, but I don't have to worry as much about all games being 3D cuz Sony isn't spending all this money marketing 3D games. If there were seven or so 3D games in this livestream, I would worry (I tend to be a worrier. In my nature).

I totally agree that people will always want that experience. I think something that MS and Sony and (to a lesser extent, nintendo) don't get is that we gamers really aren't into the cutting edge. We tend to want the same thing, just bigger, faster, prettier. We want physical copies (what the hell else uses physical copies?), we want TV experience, etc. Even minor things like the D pad on the dualshock 4 was cheerfully ignored by everyone.

Companies look at us and think "They know computers! They know tech! They MUST want the newest, trickiest, craziest tech!" But we don't. The companies that forget that get burned.

I agree they should read the market as it is whenever they run researches etc and respect their customers with a moderate promotional for any add-ons- don't make this add-on the main theme and push it on people.

@berrlett: That they should. But makers of game consoles sometimes don't. Especially if they think they own the market and always will. Xbox made that mistake with Kinnect, WiiU made that mistake with that...whatever that thing was. I hope Sony doesn't do it this time around.

@berrlett: sometimes financial return doesn't match the output. I hope they continue to do this. Virtual Reality has some future in the store, for example, they can make eyeglasses which will set u into another world with more details. 3D couldn't do that.
