PS4 Ships 60 Million Units

New heights for the PlayStation 4.

As part of Sony's earnings report for the fiscal fourth quarter and full year ended March 31, the company announced it shipped 2.9 million PlayStation 4 units in the past three months. That's up from 2.3 million during the same period last year.

For the full fiscal year (April 1, 2016 through March 31, 2017), Sony shipped 20 million PS4 units, up from 17.7 million units during the prior fiscal year. You can see more numbers and how they compare in the graph below.

With the 2.9 million units shipped in the last quarter, Sony has now shipped 60 million PS4 consoles around the world, up from the 57.1 million figure that was announced in March. Sixty million is precisely the number that Sony forecasted it would ship by the end of the fiscal year.

Another key takeaway from the Sony earnings report today is that the company is forecasting PS4 shipments to amount to 18 million units for the current fiscal year. This would be down from the fiscal year that just ended. Sony didn't say why it believes shipments will dip.

The PS4 still has work to do to catch the PlayStation 3, which has sold more than 80 million systems.

In terms of actual financials, Sony's video game division, Game & Network Services, saw revenue jump 6.3 percent year-over-year to $14.73 billion. Sony said the uptick in sales was primarily due to a spike in PS4 game sales, along with hardware sales also rising year-over-year. The increases were partially offset by the impact of the PS4 price cut and foreign exchange rates.

Operating income for the Game & Network Services division rose to $1.21 billion, an increase that Sony attributed to "cost reductions" for the PS4, as well as the previously mentioned jump in PS4 game sales. The income jump was negatively impacted by the PS4 price cut and PS3 sales dropping off.

Across all business units, Sony's revenue dropped 6.2 percent to $67.88 billion, while operating income fell to $2.57 billion.

@petey_olivarez: Does Sony leading in sales make you a happier customer? I guess you can get some of that iphone joy. Of course while iphone lovers were bragging about their iphone, android users were enjoying a feature rich, vastly more open phone. I guess uh, to each their own.

If they would make Socom 2 in HD they would double the unit sales.

@preacher001: True, true.. give a few more years and I'm sure more headlines will come out "console is dead, for realz" again with the same articles from the 80's with the dates and names of games updated.

I have to say that Sony really has knocked it out of the park this generation. Rock solid hardware supported by a huge library of quality games. 60 million is a colossal number by anyone's standards and I can't really see that slowing down anytime soon. I think PS4 will easily hit the 100 million mark.

Avatar image for Vizard666

@ecurl143: 100m might be a stretch unless they really continue at the pace as they have been these past few month. I suspect the sales might eventually slow down a little bit with the scorpio coming out soon too. I think they should reach 80m soon enough though. The rest of Sony's divisions are not doing too well so I hope this can keep them steady.

@Vizard666: the majority of gamers are casuals and will purchase the cheaper product. Even Spencer said the S will sell better than Scorpio so I don't see it effecting ps4 sales. Even the pro sells less than ps4.

Avatar image for SavageEvil

@Vizard666: You don't read too well do you? Considering they are selling at a rate of close to 20 million per fiscal year, there is a high chance they could clear 100 million in PS4 overall lifetime sales. PS4 isn't even 4 years old and is already passed 60 million in sales, and it's sales has increased YoY why would you out of the blue assume it cannot continue to sell at a high rate? I mean what evidence beside your gut can you put forth to support your position?

Avatar image for sealionact

@SavageEvil: Maybe the statement from Sony saying they expect sales to drop off? It doesn't take anything away from the sales - they've beaten all expectations - but I could see Sony trying to steal some of Scorpio's E3 thunder by announcing a future PS5, which could be why they expect sales to drop off...

Avatar image for joshrmeyer
JoshRMeyer

@sealionact: I was thinking the exact same thing. Why else would they drop off? A lot of good exclusives coming next year and some still this year.

Avatar image for jenovaschilld
jenovaschilld

@joshrmeyer: I just cannot imagine a sales drop off either, they simply have too much momentum and great deals with publishers and developers. I guess they could tack on a 100$ mandatory motion controlled add on, force always online, kill off used games, and region locking .... but come on who would be crazy enough to try that.

Avatar image for Vizard666
Vizard666

@SavageEvil: You make good points and you are right, I was basing my assumption due to skepticism on future uncertainty . I suppose they could reach the 100m mark but I just was not sure if they could maintain the YoY increase 3-4 years down the line considering Microsoft has not really pushed Sony to the limit. 100m does not sound like a huge stretch but it remains to be seen if they could beat ps2 numbers. Thinking about it, I think i got a bit more perspective on the projections. Still I feel Microsoft could do a lot better and retain some of the market share due to their current position if they make the right steps and it could take a bit away from Sony's momentum.

Awesome news for the Playstation division. They did a great job with getting developers on board and releasing a lot of great titles.

That said, Sony should just face the music and shrink/close their digital camera and smartphone divisions already. For digital cameras, most people use their smartphones and professionals will probably buy other brands. For smartphones, there is too much competition from everywhere: people either want Apple or Samsung, or they want a cheaper Android phone (I'm mainly looking at Chinese brands here). It's kind of like when they closed their VAIO laptop division. Sony is a good and reliable brand, but its nor the (perceived) best neither the cheapest.

It looks like their TV line is still doing well, though (even though I assume it gets a lot of competition from Samsung).

This means xbone should be around 27m then. Last report shows 25m, I doubt it could move 5 million in a quarter. 25m in 4 years meant xbone moves around like 2-3m per quarter. Pretty okay considering ps4 is pretty much dominating almost every land possible.

@sakaixx: I think they are closer to 34 million, but since they no longer release this data they just continue to tell stock holders that 100 trillion quadrillion googatillion players have been on xbox live and that they sacrifice a goat each tuesday per hours logged on live.

Xbox One 19 million sold LOL

Avatar image for deactivated-59aca989c9399

@Terminator95:
16 million of that is in the US while PS4 is only 17 million in the US. Sony and Nintendo have a strangle hold on Asia and Europe and it's virtually impossible for Microsoft to break into that so they've just stuck with what works for them and that's building in the states.

Avatar image for jenovaschilld

@69ingChimpmunks: Actually xbox does very well in Europe compared to nintendo but not as well as Sony PS. Xbox did exceptionally well in EU, AU, S. America during the 7th gen, but the controversial launch policies of the xbox one scared off alot of potential buyers and greatly hurt xbox momentum. True xbox never could get a foothold in Asia, even though the tie in ratio there was the highest anywhere. And microsoft is not wanting to stick with what works for them, they are just having to settle for what they can get at this point 8th gen. Shame too, the love and momentum they carried over from 7th gen was wiped out by Mattrick and Balmer with the launch policy fiasco ..

Another thing, PS sony and a young guy, forgot his name, worked tirelessly throughout Europe to build deals with Play (europes gamestop) and Europes Walmart like shops to put the face of PS on shelves everywhere. It is hard to sale xbox if your product is not in front of the consumers face on a shelf in every major store throughout Europe. He went on to CEO some other industries but his work during the 7th gen really paved the way for how fast PS sold or available during the 8th gen launch, as the xbox one still struggled with logistics.

Avatar image for sakaixx

@69ingChimpmunks: nintendo doesnt have a stranglehold in europe.

Avatar image for deactivated-59aca989c9399

@sakaixx:
They've sold a lot better than Sony or Microsoft. Maybe not a stranglehold but still outselling them by a good chunk.

Avatar image for sakaixx

@69ingChimpmunks: its switch launch month that it topped europe and a first in years for ninty and you calling that? Lol, even wii only managed to hold top against ps3 in a few short years in europe.

Overall revenue dropped by 7%....ouch. They need to drop some things or come up with some real profit maker. It's still billions but....hey.

Avatar image for guitarist1980

@bentleyj10: Yeah Sony is in trouble according to Cold Fusion the company got too big and too diverse and competition from other manufacturers caught up to Sony and surpassed them on many electronics. Right now there banking division and the Playstation is whats making money for Sony. This is the only reason why I can possibly see Sony being desperate enough to release a PS5 in 2018.. Sony literally can't lose to MS with consoles. Or they could be in deep shiat.

Avatar image for hamedmuhammady

@bentleyj10: They used to have much higher revenues but they were also bleeding money like crazy. It is their new strategy to focus on money-making divisions and sod the rest. So the revenue may drop, but they will have a decent profit of a couple of billions regardless. The new strategy has worked well for them so far, actually.

Avatar image for Orga777

@bentleyj10: That is because most of Sony is... well... not that great. It is pretty horrible, really. The Playstation brand is one of the few things making money year over year at this point.
