Sony sold 6.2 million PlayStation 4 systems during the holiday season, the company announced today. As of January 1, 2017, Sony has sold 53.4 million PS4 systems worldwide since launch in 2013.

During the holiday period, Sony sold 50.4 million PS4 games at retail and digitally. Additionally, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End sold more than 8.7 million copies as of December 21. This figure likely includes copies of the game sold in the Uncharted 4 PS4 Slim bundle.

"We are truly grateful for the tremendous support from our fans and partners, which has helped to make this holiday season one of the best in our history," Sony Interactive Entertainment president Andrew House said in a statement.

"We will aim to continue the momentum this year by broadening the PS4 title portfolio, further enriching the revolutionary gaming experiences on PlayStation VR and high quality gaming experience on PlayStation 4 Pro, while also expanding network services. We will remain steadfast in making the PS4 the best place to play."

At the start of December, Sony announced that the PS4, comprising the base model, the PS4 Slim, and the PS4 Pro, had combined to sell more than 50 million units.

The PS4 was offered for $250 in December as part of a temporary price cut that likely helped boost sales.

The PS4 still has work to do to catch the PlayStation 3, which has sold more than 80 million systems.
