Now Playing: Why PS4, Xbox One, And Switch Cross-Play May Not Happen

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

The PS4 has reached a new sales milestone. Sony announced in its latest earnings report that the console shifted 3.2 million consoles during the quarter ended July 31, which pushes the system's life-to-date shipment tally to more than 82 million units. This is up from 79 million units shipped that Sony announced for the previous reporting period.

The 3.2 million PS4s that Sony shipped during the quarter represents a slight downturn from the same period last year when Sony shipped 3.3 million PS4 systems. Looking ahead, Sony is predicting it will ship 17 million units during the current fiscal year, which is up from its previous forecast of 16 million units. Whatever the case, PS4 sales are expected to fall year-over-year, as Sony shipped 19 million PS4s during the previous fiscal year. Recently, Sony said the PS4 was entering the end of its lifecycle.

Sony's video game division, Game & Network Services, saw sales rise 36 percent to 472.1 billion yen. Sony said it attributes the uptick in sales to strong PS4 game sales. Sony's God of War, as well as "other third-party titles," performed well, "significantly exceeding expectations."

God of War launched back in April and became the PS4's fastest-selling exclusive game ever. Sony added that it received "strong feedback" for the games it announced at E3, though it did not mention any by name.

Business is good for PlayStation right now, but the company is taking something of a PR hit as it continues to prevent the PS4 from allowing cross-play with other consoles. For lots more on this subject, you can check out GameSpot's new video feature above.

Sony big success is not just console install base, it is tie-in ratio. Software to console ratio- according to gamesindustry magazine and website - consumers are buying alot more games for their console then ever before. With the ease of digital sales, greater number of retails outlets in the EU to put games in front of buyers eyes, and consumers buying multi-platform games on Sony first.

The big deal about the tie-in ratio of software to hardware is not just sales and profits, but it is a good indicator for future investments in the industry. Take the Nintendo Wii that sold 90++million consoiles, but averaged 7.1 games per hardware (most people just played wii sports) and this includes those poecha games sp? the cheap $15 ish Japanese games that sold so well. Even the ps2 (best selling) with 6.2 and the ps4 at 7.5 now estimated at over 8.0 by this year. Xbox, not even close, same with nintendo because of first party.

What a good tie in or attach rate means, is what is happening now! Sony is like Netflix in that they are green lighting projects/games like never before. This kinda reminds me of 1996', 1998' consoles or the 90' console wars. Not every game is gonna be a gem, but we are more likely to see games take more chances like, parappa the rapper and fresh new IPs. It also means Sony may be building one of the largest cash war chests for the 9th gen that also will include possible games 3-4 yrs down the road.

I wonder what Microsoft and Nintendo have planned.

Yeah, the PS4 is home to amazing games, but its still sad many great games that started and died on the PS3 could be on the PS4, and the PS4 still has less amazing AAA games than the PS3 did in the same timeline of release through 5 years later.

@jamesbr27: I am gonna have to disagree, the shear number of AAA games that have come out on this console is almost triple that of the ps3 in the same amount of time. Yes, half of them were or are mediocre, but a ton are amazing. The cell processor and the Asian developer crash, greatly limited the number of games that even came out on the ps3, especially AAA games. Do a wiki look up and you can see just how few AAA block buster games came out for the system its first 5 years. Naughty Dog spoke notorious of the development times, FF Square didn't release a ff game until 12/2009, Gran Tourismo finally got one out 2010. Just saying few new IPs and fewer sequels by 5th year mark. Many were good, but on average no better then today.

While the AAA games that have come out for 8th gen ps4 may not be to everyone's taste, they have pumped out a ton of them. I, especially am a fan of the RPG Renascence we are in - the shear number is staggering and welcomed. While the xbox is like a desert most times.

Make good games people want to play, and they buy your console.

Good news all around. The chipshot at the end about cross-play wasn't necessary. I'm not sure that's been as impactful as the internet outragers make it to be.

@RicanV: People are saying it's having an impact? I don't think people care that much about cross-play this early on to base their choice of console purchase on. That would be a weird reason not to buy a PS4 at this point. Maybe in 5-10 years if cross-play becomes really prevalent. Even then, Sony could just decide one day to add it and have it working fairly quickly if they saw it hurting sales.

@bdrtfm: absolutely. I agree with you that the purchasing decision was made well before this but you'd be surprised at how many times I saw "well this is why I won't be picking up a PS4" or the classic "I was just about to pick up a PS4 until I saw this"

@RicanV: Wow. I can see people saying that but, I'd bet many of them weren't in the market for one in the first place. I just can't see this being a factor when buying a console. Then again, I always buy each console each gen so, maybe it's different for those who only buy one single console each gen. But still......

A PS4 sales article and only 60 comments? Where the hell is everybody? An article like this used to get hundreds if not over a thousand comments. What the hell? Oh, congrats, Sony.

@bdrtfm: I've been thinking that for a while now. I remember your name from days long past, but you're one of the few aside from the mods I see anymore.

I wonder if the site has less traffic now or maybe the community got toxic to the point nobody comments alot anymore?

Avatar image for bdrtfm

@rmiller365: Not sure. I know I rarely comment anymore because, I just get flamed for having an opinion. I also only recognize a few people on here now. I'm guessing they are reading the articles and not bothering to comment.

This is what happens when you actually make good games Microsoft. Protip: Quit researching how to deliver 2 consoles next gen with a streaming service and an actual console and invest in your first party games because guess what? Who would have thought? That's what sells???

Amazing.

Bloodborne, HZD and GoW...three of the best games I’ve ever played. Definitely don’t regret getting the PS4.

Certainly a great time to own a PS4 that's for sure. I don't personally care about the cross-play stuff as I don't play online, but I can see how it would be nice to be able to play the same game despite having different consoles. Anyway, I'm really happy with my PS4, like beyond anything since consoles were a new thing. It's just a good fun time to be a console- or more specifically- PS4 gamer.

Definitely earned this success! Regularly launching great exclusives is the main reason IMO.

Who cares about cross play? I mean seriously, everyone I know (including myself) purchased their PS4 cuz of the games and the exclusive content Sony consistently puts out, not so I could play a game with someone whose on their Xbox. I just don't understand the criticism Sony is getting for not allowing it. Why should they allow it? They certainly don't need to succeed. Obviously.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@Jimbowesker: Cross play is also something that is only applicable to multiplayer games, something that has been made clear that Sony's audience does not require.

Avatar image for agramonte

@Jimbowesker: Exactly... we have tons of PS+ members filling the servers for AAA games. And SONY lets you play F2P games like WarFrame, Paladin, Fortnite for free online with 80 million players if you cant afford PS+

The Quarterly numbers do not lie...

PS4: 3.2 Million
Switch: 1.8 Million

But, but I can play Minecraft with Xbox CrossPlay on my Switch. ??

Avatar image for Sevenizz

@Jimbowesker: As an Xbox owner, I completely agree. I feel no need to game with playstation owners. In fact, I’d rather not tbh.

God of War was at 5+ million a month after release. I thought they were going to share what it's at now. I guess they'll make a statement when it hits 10 million. I wonder how successful Spiderman is going to be, and TLoU2 after that.

Avatar image for Jinzo_111887

I'm still convinced it would have sold better if they didn't charge for online multiplayer.

Avatar image for analgrin

@Jinzo_111887: 25% of ps4 owners have a ps plus account. That's 20 million people paying approx £40-£50 a year. 20 million multiplied £40. That's £800 million a year! Ok I guess not all those pay for a full year but still. That's a lot of money for Sony to put towards games or developing the next system.

@Jinzo_111887: The charge only applies to Pay to buy games. F2P games can be played without.

The PS+ games do mostly cover the cost. I can definitely say there is at least $60 worth of games I've gotten from that service. Not the best overall value but breaking even is the next best thing.

Avatar image for Destructionzz

@Barighm: Assuming you want those free games.

Avatar image for ThePlantain

@Destructionzz: I got Bloodborne for free. After thoroughly enjoying that game, that’s $60 I gladly would’ve payed.

Avatar image for shtiken

@Jinzo_111887: How much better? Enough to offset the ~$2 billion a year the high profit margin PS+ nets them? Some of the most popular games right now are free to play, and those don't require PS+ anyway.
