PS4 Rise of the Tomb Raider Preorders Come With Free Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition

Making the deal even sweeter.

It was a bit of a bitter pill for PS4 players to swallow that last year's Rise of the Tomb Raider was a timed exclusive for Xbox One (it came a few months later to PC). But the game is finally coming to PS4 in October, and it's shaping up to actually be a pretty good deal that's just gotten even better: If you preorder Rise of the Tomb Raider on PS4, you'll get a copy of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for free.

The preorder bonus was revealed on the PlayStation Store listing for Rise of the Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is the PS4 remaster of the Tomb Raider series' 2013 reboot that was critically acclaimed at launch. It's worth noting that this bonus is only for digital preorders; buying the game through the PSN Store will grant you a PS4 download for Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition.

Now Playing: Rise of the Tomb Raider Review

Rise of the Tomb Raider is launching on PS4 alongside a suite of additions and changes to the game. On all platforms, the game is getting a new singleplayer, narrative-focused mode called "Blood Ties," a zombie horde mode called "Lara's Nightmare," and a co-op mode called "Endurance."

The PS4 version, called "20th Anniversary Celebration," will include all of these new additions, PS VR support for Blood Ties, all previously released DLC, and new costumes and skins. On Xbox One and PC, the new modes will be free for owners of the season pass. You can read more about the additions here.

The game launches on PS4 on October 11. When it originally released on Xbox One, GameSpot gave it a 9/10. You can read our full review here.

Just buy the game guys the only ones missing out are the ones that want to send a pointless message. I bought it for xbox then pc and it was totally worth it. I will definitely buy it for ps4 to test out the vr on it. I don't see what the big deal is at least it's coming to ps4. Sometimes you have to wait for greatness. The 60 dollar price tag is a bit sketchy but I think it's worth it with all the extras.

i'd rather pay 40€ without the definitive edition. no real point in getting a game i played just 2 years ago.

if they actually really ask 60€ then what was the point of the timed exclusiveness? i thought microsoft paid for being able to get the most money out of that game, now if sony gets the right a year later and sells it for the same price, that just can't be, can it? even with all those (hopefully not too half-arsed) extras.

What if you already own Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition? Nice try Square Enix. I am not buying Rise Of The Tomb Raider. The game price tag is CDN$79 dollars for a year old game. The deal with Microsoft was a bad stupid decision, and Square Enix was well aware of the negative reaction gamers and PlayStation 4 owners having to wait a year, and now Square Einx should suffer the consequences they brought on to themselves. Square Enix were asking for it when they made the timed exclusivity deal with Microsoft.

Amazing game.

Playing on PC. Got it some months after the game was released on xbone. But I understand PS players rage. Wait a WHOLE DAMN YEAR to play a game is just, wrong!! In sooo many levels.

So can you preorder, get the free game and then cancel it and get your money back? Not that I care about the first game anway, just wondering if that's possible here.

Well, considering last-gen TR: Legend didn't show up on PS3 for years and 360 owners received exclusive DLC for Underworld while PS3 owners didn't get a damn thing despite buying the game in larger numbers. Despite, once again, supporting the franchise in larger numbers with the reboot in 2013 and a year later the Definitive Edition the scumbags at SE and Crystal Dynamics say 'f**k you, you have to wait' after not being upfront from the start. So I can understand - given the way PS owners get behind the Tomb Raider franchise even with the constant sh*tting on from the publisher and developer - wanting something a little more than lame VR support just as a way of letting the fans know they care. If Xbox owners got pissed, tough, they had the full game game and bragging o for a year and get preferential treatment despite not being the series' biggest backers.

Its a rare person willing to pay full price for this, so won't be long before a price drop kicks in. Most of their sales came via playstation regarding the first game, so way to shaft people who supported their product. Also most who would have wanted the first game would have played it by now and its practically been reduced to the point of almost free, so its not a sweetner as this article claims.

I lost interesting in this game after what happened last year. This year new games are the one deserving the 60$ price tag , not a year old game (even with all the DLCs), when the price drop to 10-15$ then we'll talk

Buying Digital on console makes no sense to me at all since backward compatibility is so spotty. If someone decides to sell their console, then they're stuck with a number of digital games tied to their tag.

This whole "Timed Exclusivity" deal was perhaps one of the most "needlessly" squandered releases I can remember.

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition isn't a backwards compatible game. It's a genuine ps4 game.

@killered3:

I was speaking to digital media on consoles in general, not any one specific title. If you sell the console, you can not sell the games...was my point.

I don't get it, I thought that this was a full year exclusivity and if it comes out October 11 for PS4 then it was never a full year like they been saying all alone.

Many people seem to really love TR 2013... but I don't really see why.

Sure, it had top-notch acting, but the whole story to me was pretty lame. And although the gameplay was fun for a short while, it was just a rinse and repeat of walking in one direction, climbing on the ledges indicated with white markings, and (even on hardest difficulty) shooting from cover at basically only one enemy type. Luckily the game wasn't that long. Am I wrong? What did I miss?

I will probably play Rise sometime, because most people seem to like it better than TR 2013...

You know, it's great whenever free games are given out, but honestly, if you haven't picked up Tomb Raider DE yet for PS4 by now, would you ever play it? It's been on sale on the PSN store several times for $7.

Guys do remember that getting TR 2013 for pre-ordering ROTTR isnt a PS4 exclusive thing. the Steam version also had that as well. And thanks to steam, because i had already owned TR before that, i could give the copy to my friend.

Wow, they must be worried about ps4 sales. The problem for me is I'm just not interested anymore. I have seen a lot of Rise already, and played through the reboot several times. It's super wierd because I have been playing TR since the original on the playstation in the mid 90's. It was the first game I ever beat. This timed exclusivity deal left a bad taste so I think I'm going to FINALLY practice what I preach an vote with my wallet. That's not to say that I hope the players that do buy it on ps4 enjoy it!

@joshr1370: I think Im with you on this one, last year I refused to buy it on xbox1 because I thought they sold out to Microsoft out of greed, the only way to teach them a lesson now is not to buy it on PS4 no matter how much I want to, which annoys the s h it out of me to be honest cos I really want to play it, I guess I can wait another 6 months though until I can get it for a tenner ? Gamers need to make a point here that we won't just be p i ssed on by developers, I know it won't happen but at least I get to know I did my bit

@Leefx: Well said. I'm sure all of us gamers can agree that timed exclusive on ANY platform is stupid. Either make an exclusive or dont. Although I'm sure in ROTR's case they didn't want to compete with uncharted, but it seems as though they failed to realize that a lot of fans of uncharted are also fans of TR and like me would have been happy to buy both.

Playing The first one right now. It is amazing, but have a major problem all the bad guys have the same voice actor and the same voice keeps repeating over and over again. The online game is full of cheats too, with 60 ranked players just wipe out a whole team and win every time.(PS4.)

@olddadgamer: It's $60 dollars for the PS4 version but however, that's the Game of the Year version due to it comes with all DLC, VR support, old Lara Craft skin from the good old days of the PlayStation version, and now, free with Tomb Raider game and all of that for $60. This is what I call a legit apologize from SE if you'd ask me.

@davillain-: I'll say. I'll drop sixty on it.

I was worried it would be more with all the extras.

And really, I gotta admit, I don't mind the wait. I was bummed, sure, but there hasn't been a day since last November I've found myself with nothing to play. I'm a patient man.

@olddadgamer: I feel ya on that one. I almost was considering buying Rise of the Tomb Raider for Xbox One but when I heard the PC version was not far from behind release, I'm glad I waited for the PC version cause I didn't want to support MS exclusive timely deal and it's something I HATE seeing, so no to Xbox One version.

You are gonna love Rise of the Tomb Raider and I find it to be more enjoyable then I did for Uncharted 4. (no pond intended PS4 owners)

@davillain-: imo Uncharted 4 is probably the better game overall. But Rise of the Tomb Raider has better gameplay, exploration and puzzles. I like the crafting and bow and arrow combat. I love upgrading weapons with the things I salvage. It gives me incentive to explore unlike Uncharted 4 where the 100+ treasures feel meaningless to me.

@davillain-: Yeah. I've been looking forward to it. It's funny, cuz I kind of stumbled into the reboot. I got a PS4 at release, and when that hit, which was, like, what, the February after, I really WAS hurting for something to play. I thought "Oh right.....that.....that got good reviews....right?" And loved the hell out of it. Now the sequel is on my must play list.

Nicely played, Square. Nicely played.

Though I must admit I am kinda loving Uncharted 4.....

@olddadgamer: Yep, he got me with that comment, too. I am enjoying U4 more than I expected, and I expected a lot. A perfect game for my taste. I love constant, kindhearted bickering between Nate and Sam (and Sully and other characters in previous Uncharted games). Yep I know it is unrealistic cracking jokes while jumping over life-threatening chasms and abysses, hanging to your life with fingertips on crumbling edges, but eventually it is a game - and I enjoy this approach more than darker, bent-on-survival TR reboot.

Matter of taste, I guess. RoTR looks great, anyway... lets see how well will it translate to PS4. Will definitely get it unless it turns out some unexpected performance issues.

Despite I own Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC, this looks really tempting to rebuy it but I'm sure Rise will make it's way to PS+ freebie down the road giving the fact that Tomb Raider 2013 did made it's way to PS+ for the PS3 version.
