"Since the launch of PS4 our aim has always been to provide players with the best gaming experiences at the best value, and we’ve been thrilled with the amount of players who have joined our world," the company said.

Discussing the new price point, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Jim Ryan said the console now presents its "best ever value just in time for the holiday season."

"With this year's biggest blockbusters and next year's best exclusives such as Uncharted 4: A Thief's End set to thrill players, there has never been a better time to join the PS4 community."

At TGS 2015, Sony announced a price cut for the PS4 in Japan. Following the event, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said he expected a PS4 price cut in North America, possibly in time for the holidays, and was proven to be correct.

The PS4 with a 500GB hard disk drive now also has a recommended retail price of A$479.95 (including GST) in Australia. This down from its previous price of A$549.95.

Wow, one day after a BF ad price leak about quite possibly the best deal to date for an XOne, Sony responds with this.

Maybe console gamers have benefitted as a whole with one system out-selling the other the way it has up to this point. Microsoft keeps slashing its prices to try and make up distance and Sony responds by slashing their prices to try and maintain their advantage.

In Canada at EB Games around last December, I was able to snatch a 500 GB PS4, The Last of Us remastered, GTA V and Far Cry 4 for $399. Couldn't believe that price and it was only at EB Games. There's always some amazing deals around December, whether it be at GameStop, Wal-Mart or Best Buy.

@gearsofsera: Get a dedicated media player, Kodi on the raspberry pi is like $30 and does exactly what you want. I wouldn't call playing mp3s half the value of the system's worth, that's going a bit far.

Japan, US, Australia, and now Europe. Sony sure is preparing for the holidays and some heavy hitters from the competition. It's a good time to be a system owner and you can't go wrong with any of them.

Let Xmas battle commence...still see Sony dominating though, especially in Europe.

Saw a PS4 GTAV bundle for £250 on TV the other night as well.

@kyelo: MS always does great in Europe and the US. They need to get their numbers up in Japan, Australia, China and the like.

Better drop the price in the US soon too. The PS4 is down 7 out of 9 months, and was down 36% last month.

@Baconelite: ...yeah they'll probably have to go out of business and just give up completely. I mean have they even sold a single unit since launch? They are most certainly doomed.

Can already get a PS4 for £249 at retail, guess it helps that the UK has arguably been the biggest battle ground between Sony and MS.

ms just lost that edge they had. even with halo 5 i believe more people will buy a ps4 just to play fallout 4 then bothering to buy a new console for the exclusivity. its really shaping up that this generation will always be based on the 3rd party games, because the ps4 always gets the better graphics or fps its always going to be on-top out of the 2.

@Gomtor: The PSBore will do awesome at the new price. It was before the price drop, and it will after. It prints money.

This price cut is bad news for Microsoft. It'll take the edge off what would otherwise have been a killer Christmas. I'm not even sure they'll outsell Sony in November and December. If they don't, I'd say they're pretty much on a slippery downward slope from here on out as far as Xbox is concerned, much as I love my Xbox One and all.

@domiddian: Lol, no, the Xbox will be just fine. Just because it isn't selling as well as PS4 certainly doesn't mean it's automatically selling terrible and going down a "slippery slope". It is outpacing it's predecessor the Xbox360 which has now sold around 85 million units worldwide. There is enough room in this console market for more than one console to exist and succeed.

@iammcgruber: It's no longer out pacing 360 last I saw. 360 was at about 17 million 2 years in. Depending on your source thats about 2-3 million ahead of where X1 is now.

@turianshepard: according the the graph and charts, it is outpacing the 360 at a steady pace still. That is great news for gamers. It is also selling more than the PS3 and WiiU, and has been up year over year 7 of the past 9 months.

@kvally: What charts? All I know is at the 2 year mark 360 was at 17 and to my knowledge X1 is still a few million from that #.

@turianshepard: Hmm, you could be right. I've always heard that the Xbox One is outpacing the 360's sales in the same time frame:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/08/13/ps4-and-xbox-one-are-selling-must-faster-than-ps3-and-xbox-360-did

No numbers are really thrown out, like i said, i just keep hearing it (along with the impressive PS4 numbers) are both outselling there last gen counterparts. But you could be right like I said, these aritcles tend to not have official numbers in them.

@davillain-: I hope you're right. I only say this because of that "Microsoft selling off Xbox" mantra reared it's ugly head again recently with Bill Gates saying he would support the CEO if he made such a decision.

I'll wait for the slim myself. Sony always makes some pretty nice slim models.
