PS4 Outsells Xbox One for Eighth Consecutive Month According to August NPD

Sony's PlayStation 4 continues to exert its dominance over hardware sales in the US by coming out on top once again in August.

Following the official August NPD data released earlier today, Sony followed up with their own stats. And it doesn't come as a huge surprise that the PlayStation 4 has maintained its spot as the number one console.

Guy Longworth, PlayStation Marketings senior vice president, wrote in a statement: "PlayStation 4 was number one in hardware sales for the eighth consecutive month and remains the cumulative leader for next generation game consoles." He also added, "For the third consecutive month, PlayStation was number one in combined home console hardware sales (PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3)."

It follows that Sony also performed strong on the software side. Longworth pointed out that both Madden NFL 15 and and Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Ultimate Evil Edition "had their strongest sales on PS4." And regarding first-party, The Last of Us Remastered was the "top selling first-party title in August."

The above software sales data from the NPD only take into account new, physical retail releases.

This month has been a slower one for new releases, but September is already looking strong with The Sims 4 and Destiny in stores now, and several other strong releases yet to come.

Better have all Pc. Wiiu. Psvita. Ps3. Ps4. Xbox one. and play the game you want in the system of your choice.

PS4 might have better visuals but it's software updates are seriously lacking and the Wi-Fi is absolute garbage, the only solution is to buy powerline adapters. Now Sony is quietly releasing an updated version with a better Wi-Fi adapter, so figure, Sony is SHADY to the max, I smell another class action suit

After all this advertisement, and the promotion, on shows, tv and shit, and still xbox 1 is behind.

Sad for them and somehow hopeful for the future of videogames. It's a clear message.

"When you hate videogames and want them to die your console will not sell very well. It will sell still, but not very well."

...

It's puzzling though. Didn't xbox one give the ability to watch tv as well? :D

With the lack of game selection and the higher sells of the PS4, shouldn't that worry XB fans? Right now MS is trying everything in it's power to move consoles. With the overload of bundle deals and the new price break, except in the US, where they assumed they would dominate, but are still trailing behind. PS4 sells still continue to outsell the competition. Now the fact that the PS4 game library will explode in 2015 and all the timed XB exclusives running out, what else does MS have to offer to get back into the race? The announcement from the new MS department head to make a revised system that will compete with the performance of the PS4, will they offer a trade up deal to anyone who already purchased the original version? What's it going to take to get this into more homes around the world? These are not rhetorical questions, I would really like to know what you all think about this, XB and PS fans.

<< LINK REMOVED >> XBONE will get a big boost from COD and HALO. But that's pretty much the only people that will Love this system. Sunset Overdrive looks promising but not a system seller.

They will have to include Kinect with the XBox for $399 WITH a free game in order to make any moves at all in my opinion.

Xbox one lost people when they realized it only outputs at 900P. Who uses 900P?? The standard was 1080P minimum. Upconverting to 1080p don't cut it either. Movies and games look alot better on the PS4. I was always for xbox until I noticed the poor picture quality of the Xbox1 to the better picture quality of the PS4. It won me over. I also found the ps4 gamepad to be better. But, I think, in the end it all goes to how many and how fast the games and DLC role out. I still keep my x360 connected because of all the games for it. I am not exactly for the idea of renting older games from the cloud on the new consoles i'll just wait for the redux version, and yes, repurchase them.

Wasnt ps3 winning last gen as well and xbox came back. And generatex more rev thanks to live. Hackers are already messing with ps4. Considering everything with open gaming and how sony has an open indie market. I would not want my credit card anywhere near a sony system due to their track record of hacks. Sony is failiing as a company. And with their losses going out of control it would only be a matter of time before those losses start cutti g into ps4 ability to produce games as its already appearing to do. Now. The best games ssony has are its indies and even those are coming over to xbox as well. I would not be suprised if microsoft start short ending sony on minecraft soon because that game has bigger potential than people realize and its alrady established. Sony is winng the batle but microsoft will win the war

@Csdabest89 Actually the 360 was winning in sales between it and the ps3 for the first few years of last gen. This was partially do to the 360 launching a year earlier and the extremely high price of the PS3 at launch. Eventually the PS3 clawed it's way back and overtook the 360 in worldwide sales. If Sony could make a come back last gen then Microsoft could conceivably do the same this gen.

Hackers are constantly messing with pretty much all major companies, Sony and Microsoft included. It's not something new nor is it likely to change anytime soon.

Sony obviously has huge losses as a company but it is not affecting it's ability to produce games. (the fact that they are working on project Morpheus, for good or ill, shows how much money they are willing to pump into their gaming division) All consoles go through a slow patch the first year of their life. The XB1 and PS4 are no different although they've been helped by the number of quality indie titles released as well as the several rereleased titles.

As for which exclusives are better, that will differ from one gamer to the next. They both have an excellent selection of games both out and on the way so I'm confident fans of each will have plenty to enjoy.

(See, it is possible to outline information on consoles w/o trying to skew things to make one side look better than the other)

I prefer Sony when it comes to consoles, but I don't see any reason why game sites need to rub everyone's faces in the sales figures constantly.

Not much M$ can do now, except cut price even more and give away even more. Both of which make M$ desperate for sales. Which in turn, will turn people off the machine. IF only they had the balls to stick to there guns. Just goes to show the ideas they've removed were just there to make them more money. They were never there to improve gaming, which is what they keep saying. Now the whole wolrd can see they dont want nothing to do with it!!!

<< LINK REMOVED >> Nothing wrong with the amount of units XB1 have sold. Sony specifically said they didn't know why their (PS4) console was selling as well as it was, they didn't expect it to happen. Both consoles are doing well, one is just doing a lot better than the other.

I haven't bought a current gen console and wont until both have larger libraries to choose from, (I haven't seen a single game that has made me decide on what to go with yet) work out bumps with the interfaces, offer at least 1TB of storage space, and come out with the slim version. After all my friends with 360's went through a RROD with each of their consoles I will never buy first gen tech again.

Just curious about how many people with strong opinions towards either PS4 or XB1 have actually played both so they can honestly say which one is better?

I've owned various Nintendo, PS and XB over the years but only ever the Wii and XB from the same generation as I couldn't afford to own multiple at the same time. I got the Wii to play Sports and Mario Kart with my wife and kids and the XB 360 for me.

I loved my PS2 and very nearly joined the PS4 crew (and hope to one day) but picked the XB1 for 3 reasons, got 4 free games, can share my live membership with my 360 and my internet provider doesn't include XB downloads in my quota. With restrictive quotas and lots of digital content these days, this last one was a big consideration for me.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I have both systems, basically so I can play all the exclusives without taking part in this ridiculous 'my console is better than yours war'. In all honesty there is much less between them that the fan-boys will have you know. Both are great systems and both will deliver great gaming. I can only assume that people claiming the Xbox One picture quality is poor have never seen it in action and is only trying to make themselves feel great about getting the PS4. I think if you really like great games then both systems have enough great exclusives to justify buying both. Another way to look at it is an Xbox One + PS4 cost less than a good gaming PC and just think about the huge games library you are going to have access to over the next 4-5 years.

@kljvoph Thanks for the feedback. I think it was Grand Turismo that drew me to the Playstation many years ago so can understand where you're coming from.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It all depends on what games you want to play. I got tired of JRPGs during the NES/SNES/PS1 time period (just played way too many) so PS2 was a terrible system for me I hated the new Twisted Metal and got bored with Tekken, and I prefer Forza to GT. But God or War, Shadow of Colossus, Monster Rancher and Fire Pro R made it worth it to me to have PS2. I had a lot more fun on Original Xbox during that time and Xbox Live was a game changer during that time for me. Forza and Halo 2 were just the top of the amazing times in Live but their were so many more.

Sony made me so mad with their arrogance when they launched the PS3 and it was a couple of years later before I gave it a chance, but the RROD on the 360 was a nightmare also. Really didn't enjoy the PS3 until the last couple of years.

There is some amazing stuff coming for PS4, but I can't imagine not playing Forza Horizon 2 in a couple of weeks on the XB1 and honestly me and friends are really looking forward to the Halo Collection. But Rime on PS4 looks great too, amazing actually.

Just look at the coming soon sections of game sites and write down the games you know you will play and see which system has the games you want.

I can't imagine not having both systems. Don't know if you have a job or not, but work a couple extra days or an extra shift for a few weeks if that's possible and get both.

Wii U is a great choice if you can live without third party games. Seriously there are some great games on the Wii U, lots of fun to be had.

Good luck, it's a tough choice with limited funds.

The console may be a tad slower but games look just as good and the console runs cooler then the ps4 also the Xbox one software is amazing. Although, for gamers unable or unwilling to get them all, they should simply get the one with the exclusives that get them the most excited. You really can't go wrong with any of them tbh.

<< LINK REMOVED >> you can also do this "share your account" between your xbox one and 360, that isnt exclusive to ps4, you can have to 9 accounts on your xbox one/360 using the same xbox live gold subscription. Let me guess: the salesman sold you a 720p HDTV and you thought: hey, I've got myself a good deal! The guy threw a few free movies in the package and I've got myself a nice remote. And he said: a TV like that, you can connect that to the cable my friend!

Bad news: the other one you could get for the same price, but playing at 1080p, could also be connected to the cable. And, with the Playstation Plus and you can "share your membership" between the PS4, the PS3 and the Vita, and with much better games.

Avatar image for zeroninegs

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Your posting on an article about the PS4 being the top selling console and yet somehow shocked and appalled that there are Sony fanboys commenting? Besides, your comments so far have been just as bad as theirs. You create a post complaining about their use of fake facts by creating a fake fact yourself...really? There are some great games on the XB1 and PS4. Just because you might not like them or already played a version of them doesn't mean they are imaginary or shouldn't exist.

The first year or two of a new consoles life is always plagued with fewer games but the indies, ports, and rereleases have helped to fill in the gaps between new triple-A titles. Of course there are several that we've already played on the P.C. but there are a great many console gamers who've never experienced them.

I prefer the PS4 because I like the exclusives coming like Bloodborne. I still have a 360 and it's a good system as well as the PS3. Microsoft lost me at E3 with all the restrictions they put on X1 plus forcing me to buy Kinect bad $500 price tag. But I'll get one next year like I waited till Sony dropped the price of PS3

Sure, there are some good things to come, but I don't buy into the future, as many times it changes drastically. For me, I got the X1 and have had nothing but a good time with it. I start to take myself to the store to pick up a PS4 when I see all the articles, but then wonder why I would do that when there is literally nothing to play on it now. Sure, there are some good games on it, but I have played them already. No need to spend close to $500 just to play TLoU in HD, and that is really about it for now.

With my insight on cloud computing, it is going to be amazing when X1 starts to utilize it, and all the doomsayers will have a moment to put one foot in their mouth and the other to kick themselves in the butt, lol.

Really, it is all personal opinion. Buy what is good for you and what suits your desires. If you buy one just because of the maker, then you are nothing but a sheep. As long as you have fun and play some good games!
