Today during a special event at the Game Developers Conference, Sony announced that a consumer model of the PlayStation 4 VR headset Project Morpheus will launch in the first half of 2016. A new prototype headset was also revealed, which you can see above.

The new Morpheus prototype features nine tracking LEDs, which Sony says should make positional tracking more accurate. The new prototype, which features a 5.7-inch screen, also supports a 100-degree field of view and 360-degree tracking.

Enhancements are being made to the new Morpheus headset centered around ergonomics and display. The latest model sports a 1920 x RGB x 1080 OLED display, meaning all pixels have RGB sub-pixels. This enables low persistence, removing motion blue cased by the LCD screen from the original prototype, Sony said.

The newest Morpheus prototype also features a 120hz refresh rate, which is double compared to the first edition, Sony said.

Sony has also made improvements to the Morpheus design in terms of comfort. The new prototype features a single band headset design and quick release button. This, Sony says, should make it easier for players to put it on and take it off. The new headset is also lighter than the original model, hopefully helping users find it to be more comfortable during play sessions.

Pricing for the consumer model of Morpheus was not announced. Sony also confirmed it will show more games for the device at E3 in June and during other industry events.

"With the technical specs achieved on the new prototype, we are one step closer to realizing our vision for making amazing VR experiences on PS4, and ultimately to deliver a real sense of presence to players," PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida said. "We believe that the near-final technology of Morpheus combined with the power of PS4 will provide a standard for game developers to target as they build on their creative ideas and turn them into VR games and experiences."

GameSpot is getting a first-hand look at the new Morpheus headset today at GDC. Check back later for lots more.

I tried it. It has its own unique experience. It is nothing like the OculusRift, however. It feels like I am viewing a 3D topographic map with a black bordering frame. Looks like a hologram on a table and I am viewing directly above. If you tilt your head, it quickly becomes apparent and the stereoscopic view is thrown off. Makes for a cool sight, nonetheless.

Man it would be nice if they get AMD FreeSync to work on this somehow. (To ensure frame rate dips don't ruin experience). One can dream. That happens I will definitely be on board.

This is cool and all but theres no good games on ps4 let alone making this damn thing. The only game I have on my ps4 is Lords of the Fallen. Otherwise my daughter uses it for netflix...

The Power Glove, Virtual Boy, Morpheus.

My comment is far from the last time these things will be referenced together.

You are referencing the wrong things..

Virtual boy, turbo360 controller, 3DO, kinect, xbox (all of them), zune..

Powerglove was fun, it worked, and didn't cause vb syndrome migranes....

Where are all the haters who claimed that the Morpheus wont work with VR and that the PS4 was so weak and it could only push 30fps? Ouch! :D haha

I'll get one of these on day 1, but I'm expecting it to be between $500-600, I also do not expect it to be too comfortable, not really expecting the device to be that light(guessing 10-15 lbs). Definitely waiting for the chance to pre-order this though.

Haha, no.. it's actually lighter, and more comfortable than the current rift (which itself, dk2, weighs less than a pound...). Wore no less than 4.5 lbs on my head 20 hours a day in combat ( nearly 5.5 lbs on night missions) without an issue..... even MILES gear by itself (not the new stuff nobody gets) weighs more than this vr set.

Hopefully we won't have to wait almost 3 years for some solid titles for it like with the PS4.

I'll wait until games will work using this, I'm sure they are in development and I'm interested to see how it will all look.

I'll happily grab one of these and a PS4 If the software is there, though there's not enough software to convince me to buy the PS4 yet, let alone the headset.

It is highly likely that 2016 will be the year of VR. Or the year VR failed one more time. Either way I guess most of the VR people will be aiming for some time in 2016.

Motion blur is the issue, as is the screen door effect, sony resolved both, while even oculus has not yet (in fact, dk reduced some of this, but still has it, and introduced chromatic issues now...).

I'll be getting this. No doubt about it. I'm ready for proper VR, and a change from the traditional flat monitors we've been using for decades. I was hoping for it this year, but I knew that was wishful thinking. I just hope with all these different VR sets coming out people warm up to the idea finally.

They need to bump up that field of view though.

I'll also be getting the Rift, or possibly even Vive too... probably HoloLens as well. I need to hear more on that though before I decide.

That is true hopefully Sony has real plans for this thing and don't just shove it out the door then forget about it. PS move though I feel was a very early stepping stone for this.

<< LINK REMOVED >> VR is a very different market though. I don't know much about their support when it comes to Vita, but it makes perfect sense for Move and PS TV. If we support a product, they will. Nobody is buying those products, so why would Sony put too much effort into them?

But why would we buy those products if Sony doesn't give us any incentive to?

promising device. too bad it'll be stuck playing ps3-like games on ps4 (3D ain't free, and 120hz even less. graphics will take a lot of hits to achieve that kind of setup)
